  • agreed, BUT people should not just use a scale to measure progress and use a BF % check every couple weeks to see their progress. For instance over the last 6 weeks I've only lost 3 pounds, but have gone down 2 pant sizes and gained size in my legs and upper body.
  • yup, body fat is where it's at. It isn't about the scale if you are exercising, although at first it may be. It is BF %. I am convinced that if a lot of folks on this site working so hard would measure their BF once a week, they would be a lot more motivated than they already are.
  • I do every morning but it can be frustrating. Keep in mind that if you are also exercising along with counting calories, you are losing FAT even if you are not losing weight as fast as you like. I am down to my last 10 or 12 pounds to lose...and I have weighed about the same the last 2 weeks....but dropped a pant size! -B
  • Everyone probably deals with a family member or 10 who don't care what they eat (or feed you). You are dealing with it the right way. Many moms and grandma's get great satisfaction at fattening up their family. It is how they show love. So give her grace. -B
  • 1. they may say they are burning that much but it is still a TOTAL GUESS...and I always doubt those huge numbers unless they are doing some really difficult exercise with variations built in for major effect. 2. you should underestimate those calories in case you are over estimating the effect. 3. CHANGING your routine…
  • Not sure, but I look for them with more protein than carbs.
  • Welcome! You will find lots of encouragement here, and almost always good advise. I have to maintain a weight for my job and now that I am in my upper 40's it is more and more difficult so I use MFP to help me count my daily intake and exercise calories. Counting calories, and eating just under (by 150 to 300) what you…
  • Coffee. and running do the trick for me.
  • Your diet, particularly not enought protein could definately make you unable to recover. But I am serious about no over doing it. Your heart has to be extremely healthy to do this workout and when you are overweight it has a lot to do other than just the exercise support. Try 20 minutes of the videos, but do it every day.…
  • P90X is for athletes I am convinced, try doing the first 15- 25 min a day at first. P90X is NOT NOT..NOT a starter program. I've been doing 30 minutes but have worked up to 40 lately. My wife is extremely out of shape and I just have her starting with the stretching a very slight exercise. Because it is 6 days a week it is…
  • Chest and Back because I can actually do it most of the way through. The others I can't and PLYO is killer and NOT my favorite. Someday I hope it will be.
  • Dont' make it too complicated. It is an estimate, but if you shoot for 200 to 300 less than your total calorie goal (daily normal + exercise added in) you will lose fat. 1 to 3 punds a week usually.
  • You've got the right attitude about not being fixated on food. Although that is hard when you are contantly counting calories. You learn after a while about how much everything is and it does not take as much effort. Not sure how your current condition affects your movement (exercise) but if your doctor says its OK,…
  • Welcome, feel free to friend me. Not too many guys here, lots of ladies, which is cool but good to see another Man, manning up and getting fit. I have to stay fit for my job and I have found that counting calories is really the only lifestyle change that works consistently to lose or maintain the proper fitness (fat)…
  • Agreed, right on target. I am experiencing the same issue since October of last year. My last 10-15 are going away slowly but because I am working out, I know that my fat content is going down and perhaps gaining a little muscle. The scale is not a good judge when you get down to the last 10. You should be getting your…
  • BMI measurement using only a 1 or 2 measurements plus height and weight are often times WRONG on a lot of body types. When I use that It measures me up around the 23% to 25% for BF%. But if I use calipers and measure the 7 points and use that calculator (they are on the web too), it measures me around 18.
  • agree with Bdmiller42. This sounds like a very bad, and not a healthy idea. All you have to do these days to make a mint is come up with a "new" idea about how to lose weight with little regard for safety or ignore what actually has been proven to work the best in the long run. Losing a couple pounds a week, slow and…
  • Welcome! Having to stay in shape for my job the last 10 years (in the military) and getting older gives me a lot of experience at staying under a certain weight and I can say that counting calories is the only way that really works without actually joining some diet plan. The diet plans work because of the calories anyway.…
  • Go Rockies. the MLB app on my iPHone is the only app I spend real money on. I think its 17 or 18 dollars a year, but its worth it. You can listen to any game and they post videos immediatly after something happens.
  • First let me answer your question...no. You are trying which is better than most folks out there who really could not give a hoot whether they are in shape, so don't quit but do rest. Secondly, the only way to lose weight is to eat less than you burn, that does not mean you need to work out every day. Your body needs to…
  • Oh and once a week eat your max calories and splurge a little. It keeps your metabolism from thinking you are starving it. But don't go crazy of course! :-)
  • Everyone is different and the guidlines here are just that. You may burn more, or less than it actually says so you have to experiment. You should only undercut your calories by 200 or so. So if it says 1400 for the day, then you burn 400 (again an guesstimate) then you should eat around 1600 to 1800. If you maintain your…
  • you are getting some good advice here. Your body is craving nutrition so it can fight the bacteria. As much as you can don't feed it junk food and you'll be fine. Worry about the calories next week!
  • Everyone's body is different but nutritionists and physical fitness experts agree, you should eat before you work out. A balance of protein, carbs and fat. Small is good though before a workout so your stomach isn't too full. Then eat again afterwards, same type of meal, balanced.
  • Greetings, you are in the right place! But seeing progress is the best motivation! You will find it from people too but you will self motivate it if you follow some very simple rules. Count your calories, don't eat more calories than you should and try to stay away from junk food. ...period. As a former body builder and a…
  • Me TOO! I love pickles and did the dance of joy when I looked them up. I am going to look for a lower sodium variety.
  • I have raised six children (a Brady bunch) and I made them all watch it....a family tradition. He'll be making fart noises in Heaven I am sure.
  • I forgot also to answer your question on low carbing. My personal feeling is that it is a perfectly fine way to lose weight but remember your body needs them so don't cut them out completely...you need balance. It is calories that count...not carbs. For instance a potato with margarine is low calorie, but not low…
  • Welcome. That is why we are all here, to keep motivated, encourage and commiserate! You mentioned something that is a pet peave of mine so I have to comment. worrying about "bulking up" from weights is total misnomer, wives tale, misunderstanding, false idea, and any other thing I can think of to make you remember that…
  • see your doctor, and perhaps eat more during the evening would be my suggestion. You will absolutely gain weight if you do that more than once a week.
