  • Husband crunching vegetable sticks!!
  • Are you eating enough carbs? They give you energy.
  • OK, so I am the old lady of the group at age 61! Trying to get back in shape to enjoy life more and feel better about myself.
  • Hi..I just found out I have type II diabetes this fall. I am seeing a dietician and she has recommended 45-60 carbs per meal (three meals a day!) and 15-20 carbs per snack (up to 3 snacks a day)...no more that 200g of carbs a day. She recommends whole grains, so I have oatmeal about four times a week and whole grain cold…
  • Homemade chili (Super Bowl leftovers) served over pasta...a change from meatballs and Italian sausages.
  • I am seeing a dietician for recently diagnosed type II diabetes. She has told me to have 45-60 carbs per meal (3 meals a day) and 15-20 carbs per snack (up to 3 snacks a day)....which adds up to 240 daily, but she said to try to keep it under 200g per day. Hope this helps some.
  • I also use the one cup size. As a matter of fact, that is what we are having for dinner tonight, too...served over pasta. A nice change from meatballs and Italian sausages.
  • Eat something before going. Don't sit directly in front of the food. Nurse your drink (s). Concentrate on the game. GO PATS!
  • Glad to see you are on the right track. Learn from my mistakes...I did nothing about it for too long and now have been diagnosed with type II diabetes at age 61. Anyway, there is no looking back...I have lost 28 pounds since October and like you, rejoined the gym and found my way to MFP in January. Best of luck on your…
  • Jello sugar-free instant pudding. It is what gets me through (topped with a little Light Cool Whip). They have a lot of flavors. I make them with skim milk. I also like TCBY sugar-free, fat-free frozen yogurt.
  • I finally lost 1 pound today....after not losing anything since January 16th!!! Hang in there and try not to be discouraged!
  • I wish I had read your information earlier in life. I am 61 and was diagnosed with type II diabetes in October, 2011. My understanding is that there is no cure...only keeping it under control. It was a real wake-up call and I immediately started taking control of my life. I have lost 26 pounds since then and joined the gym…
  • Scrambled eggs...3 egg whites, one yolk. Oatmeal. Pasta..but not too much.
  • I see TONS of young women using the babysitting service at the Y. I think it is included in a family membership.
  • *TCBY non-fat, no sugar frozen yogurt or *Trader Joe's Fiberful chocolate chip granola bars They have a lot of fiber so you can deduct from the carb #. Do you know that trick? For every gram of fiber OVER 5, you can deduct from the carb #. In this case, one bar has 22g carbs....the fiber is 9g...so you can deduct 4 from…
  • Only 15 carbs a day? My dietician told me 15- 20 carbs for snacks (up to 3 snacks a day) and 45-60 carbs for meals, which makes 240 the most I should have in one day. I wonder if she is wrong and I should use less?
  • Try not to get too discouraged. It is very disheartening, I know (haven't lost 1 lb. since Jan. 16th). Hang in there...I am rooting for you!
  • Way to go, Kitty! Any loss is a good loss. I always imagine a pound lost as a pound of butter or a pound of bacon "melted" from my body. Someone recently mentioned filling a clear jar with marbles...one for each pound lost...a nice visual. Good luck on your weight loss journey!
  • Sometimes a "cheat" can help you stay on track...get it out of your system and enjoy it...tomorrow is another day. Constantly denying yourself, can lead to throwing in the towel.
  • Every journey begins with one step. One thing in your favor, is your young age. I am almost double your age and now have some medical issues to deal with (type II diabetes, high blood pressure) and I wish someone had told me at your age to get back to a healthy weight. I think it can be so overwhelming...so baby steps!…
  • My cravings: lasagna, warm gingerbread topped with homemade whipped cream and turtles (the chocolate/carmel/nut clusters I used to get at a local candy shop). Last night, as I munched an almond, I pretended it was part of a turtle! Haven't given in yet, though.
  • I have one Hershey's with almond bars sitting in a drawer from Halloween. I gave all of the other extra bars away...but kept this one just to show it has no power over me!
  • Hi..what part of Ireland? My niece is doing a semester abroad in Cork.
  • I love your post. I just re-joined the gym today but still don't have an activity that I am passionate about. We never had gym in my school (small, private school) but we played outdoors all of the time....swimming (summers), hoola hooping, roller skating, walking, running, jump roping and in the winter, it was playing out…
  • Hi...I am 61 years old...and I wish they had something like this when I was your age. I have now been diagnosed with typeII diabetes. Learn from my mistakes....get the weight off. You will love yourself for it.
  • What's done, is done! So now, take a deep breath...and get back on track. Don't beat yourself up about it.
  • Welcome to MFP! I feel like I have found my male twin! I am 61, was just diagnosed (Oct. 2011) with type II diabetes and also have asthma. I feel like the diagnosis is a wake up call and started eating healthier and have lost 25 pounds so far. My A1C dropped from 7.1 to 6.8 and am sure it will be down more next time. I…

  • Hi...hope you stick it out. I know a one pound loss never seems like much....so I always imagine a pound of bacon or butter "melted" off of my body. I have lost 25 pounds since mid-October...and have been waiting for my next one pound loss for about two weeks now. (very disappointing....but that scale WILL move down again…
  • I love Reebok's outlet store. Tons of nice workout clothes and I think you can order on line.
  • I love this idea, too! Thanks for sharing.
