Thank you all so much. It didn't even occur to me to cry when I thought of the struggling addict; the hip young adult; the tentative middle-schooler; or even the wildly original six-year-old who, when I was slated to take him trick-or-treating, asked me to dress as "a purple cat with a green hat and red boots" (I did).…

Dude, that's a lot. I lost 15 lbs in my 1st 32 days (actually in my first 21 days, and then plateaued for a week and a half, but I started out at 313 lbs and I'm 5'9." I'm also female, so it makes sense you'd lose faster, but still - that's a lot. To get scare-monger-ey on you for a bit: Overly rapid weight loss can make…

I have a Italian friend who won't let me say the word "gnocchi" in her presence because I can't pronounce it well enough to please her highly-discriminating Italian-raised ear. (She does lets me eat the small potato dumplings in question, but only if I can do so without saying their name.) Does that mean that gnocchi are…

LO-*kittening*-L! :D :D :D I'll take it.

Since I'm completely unqualified, I'll start: (Note: Take 'em or leave 'em. They're worth what you paid for 'em.) @debrakgoogins Based on state of residence and air of cheerful rising to opportunity, I'm going with "Maine Chance." @NorthCascades Based on apparent love of rocky precipices and the noise made by the Billy…

Googling for wisdom about trail names, I found this and its amusing disclaimer: "The Trail Name Generator was created in jest. Please send angry comments to getalife@nobutreally.net."

My friend and I have a related running joke: It seems like every generic "Tips For Improving Your Health"-type list we see spends at least half of its bullet points touting the benefits of quitting smoking. It seems unfair that we should have to miss out just because neither of us have ever smoked in the first place (not…

I have a whole long list of rather silly scale-based goals: When I lose three more pounds, I will weigh 289, which is 17 squared. I haven't thought of a proper prize for that, so it will just probably amuse me. One pound below that, and I'll be halfway through the "mordibly obese" weight range. I'm celebrating that by…

Meal planning helps a lot, and some people even prep all their weekly meals in big batches on the weekends. Prepping on the weekends may also make it easier to rope Hubby into helping as much as possible. Your kids are probably still pretty young, but are they old enough to do simpler things like putting together their own…

@Lounmoun Thanks :) You are quite right, my family doesn't have the really hurtful horror-show potential that that so many MFP'ers are faced with at holiday gatherings. That's partly because the worst serial offenders are no longer invited to these things; and partly because we're very "Protestant" in that what is said is…

I've been doing the same set of stretches most days for years now. Lately I've noticed that I have to be a little more careful to get my limbs & joints all properly aligned for each stretch: I have a greater range of motion now that there's less of me restricting how things can bend. :)

Some cats only just alert families to fires or protect babies from rattlesnakes - phooey on them. Your cat's what I call a true dyed-in-the-hairball hero!

@countcurt 's point is valid. OP's hubby wouldn't be the first spouse to try to sabotage their partener's weight loss. Some boys are passive-aggressive. Lots of boys are stupid. The people most likely to be able to figure out figure out which one OP's hubby was being are OP, Hubby, and any marriage counselor they might…

Personally, I cook ground elk just the same as tree elk. ;) Silliness aside, I've sadly never had the chance to cook or consume any kind of elk, arboreal or terrestrial. I understand that it's a lean and flavorful meat, so I might use it in burgers. Or, not sure what you call it, but if I had some right now I might brown…

I remember the first time I realized that 5 lbs on 5'9", not-very-overweight-at-185 me was a completely different story than 5 lbs on my 5'0", 110 lb. friend. It felt little bit shocking at the time, but now I wonder where I thought she was going to put it (...what, a knapsack, maybe? ;) ). I'm still at the other end of…

The perfect is the enemy of the good. An incorrect entry is better than no entry at all. Say I eat a homemade chocolate chip cookie, and I have no idea how many calories it has. MFP's food database has entries for chocolate cookies ranging from 53 calories each(!) to 448(!!!). But, if I eat a 53 calorie chocolate chip…

Dear Future Evelyn, Well, *kitten*. All that hard work, and now... :s ...That's gotta hurt. It was great for while there, though, when you were at goal. Remember how that was? All that energy, and feeling so much better (not to mentioned how good you looked, girlfriend! ;) ). And then, after a few years, over a few years -…

I got a Fitbit about a month ago, and it's been great for tracking exercise; and for monitoring my sleep, which is an area I have a lot of trouble with. I've had trouble with figuring out how to set the other stuff up - Fitbit apparently didn't anticipate any as slow and sedentary as me - but I tried putting in some new…

Although - You do have me looking askance at my coffee table reading. I will be watching for those troublesome messages to men in John Steinbeck's "The Log from The Sea of Cortez," the book on the historic architecture & defenses of Scottish castles, and my Voter's Pamphlet.

See, that's the thing. @tbright1965 , you have to go out of your way, to take some action that you could choose not to take (reading, watching, etc.), to be bombarded with the messages you're objecting to. Those messages aren't just coming at you from random directions while you're minding your own business and trying to…

Snappy rejoinder you'd probably never actually be able to use: "Not really, but yesterday was my day for eating treats. Today's my day to go around punching people."

Good one. :D (now to steal your joke and run away with it...) That poor cat! She lost her shirt on BeachKitty, and then she took a bath with ShakFlea. She spent fat stacks on MediCat, coughed up way too much for FurBallLife, and finally blew through a slew on MewLaRue. ... That's how she wound up living in the dish…

IMO, when it comes to logging, doing it right is important; but not as important as doing it at all. For me, at least, the actual record is very helpful, but what helps me the most is the accountability. It means that the idea of eating something doesn't just present itself to the less-intellectual parts of my brain, the…

Is that your older sister in the pic on the left? Sure looks like it! ;)

I checked out the website. If she had $199 and didn't mind the prospect of financial ruin, apparently I could sign my cat up to be an Optavia "Fitness Coach."

Maybe it's like being in a car with bad shocks going downhill on a bumpy road: lots of little bumps and jumps, but still going downhill. :)

I hate chlorine, too. I was thrilled a little while ago when I learned that my city provides lifeguards at swimming beaches on some local lakes throughout the summer. :) I was less thrilled that I discovered this two days before Labor Day. :/

Oh, @ESPRESSO_OR_ELSE , that's rotten :'( It's tough enough to face the idea of mortality in general, let alone the reality of our parents' mortality. This thread has put me much more in touch than I'd like to be with my own mortality. I'm 56, and have been obese since childhood and morbidly obese for the last two decades.…

Sound like maybe he had the transmission in neutral and the parking brake partially engaged.
