Clean Eating: no processed/refined foods, no high sugar/fat foods, or no foods with dirt on them?
I'm confused about clean eating: I'd thought it meant eliminating processed and refined food from one's diet, but I see people saying things like "I'm eating clean: no cake or cookies or other sweet treats." Sure, lots of readily available dessert foods incorporate highly processed/refined ingredients; but I can make you a…

I want to drown myself in ice cream (but the same time, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to eat again)
(Warnings: very sad, very personal, & not entirely food-&-fitness related) The news reports are referring to my nephew* as "the pedestrian." That's pending the autopsy and the notification of people like me that he was the 33rd traffic-related fatality in Portland this year. (*For anyone who remembers some of my earlier…

Managing Expectations; or, "What I Am Gonna Do About My Family? (Holiday Edition)"
I going to my Mom's for Thanksgiving, and all the siblings and in-laws and nephews and grands are going to be there. I'm not very worried about the food itself. Each of us has at least a few dietary restrictions, and Mom has the most restrictions of any of us. That means that a person's need to eat what they say they need…

I just want to eat something dumb... (vent)
I'm hungry, and I don't want to bother with preparing a healthy nutritious dinner with protein and vegetables and so on. I just want to eat a cupcake or seven. Or ice cream. Or potato chips and garlic dip. Fortunately, I don't have any of the latter in the house; so it's going to be Japanese buckwheat Soba noodles with…

What does everybody do for DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)?
I'm trying to figure out an exercise program that won't aggravate my fibromyalgia, but have been having even more trouble with muscle soreness and fatigue than I had anticipated. (Not expecting that anyone out there can cure fibro, but) I would like to try some of the things people use to ease muscle soreness and speed up…

Reasons Why I DON'T Want to Lose Weight
(I hope it's okay to steal a post from another thread and use it to start my own, because that's what I'm doing here.) Stolen from the "Breakdown" thread: Wow. This is a great insight, and a great idea. :) While I have another, much longer, list of reasons to lose weight; this is my "Why Not To" list so far: 1. It is so…

Snarky things we will never actually say to people who insist on talking about our weight loss
"Have you lost weight?" - - "Have I? I guess I should weigh myself one of these days." "What's your goal weight?" - - "I haven't really settled on a number yet. What's yours?" "How much have you lost?" - - "I dunno. How much have you found?" "How did you lose the weight?" - - "I swallowed a tapeworm." (I am always so-o-o…

Lat pain from a tight bra band?
I've been having muscle pain from just beneath my right shoulder blade. It started up really bad on Friday, and eased just a bit yesterday. My internet searches seem to indicate that the pain is right about where the latissimus dorsi muscle attaches to the ribs. I think I must have somehow done something to that lat…

Cramps! (the muscle kind)
I've just started exercising again. This morning, I was gently stretching my calf when it went haywire and cramped up like nobody's business (*kitten*, that hurts!). I still can't point my toes for fear that'll cramp it up again. Is there something I should be doing, or should have done, to keep this from happening? Thanks.

Fatigue, calories, rate of weight loss, and that stupid dumb stupid scale
Last week, I was having trouble with really bad fatigue (as in, I'd be hungry and need to eat, but would have to push myself to go fix myself a bowl of instant oatmeal). I have really severe fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome, but this was a whole lot worse than usual. I tried upping my Calorie goal by 50 Calories per…

Hanging Up My Cape and Tights!
And getting out my Goth Undertaker drag. >:) As of this morning, my BMI has dropped below the magic level of 45, and I am no longer "Super obese." I'm merely "Morbidly" so. (And no, many people would not regard being morbidly obese as something to celebrate, but many people have also never been super obese.)

Anyone tried Bike Sharing?
I'm thinking about biking for exercise, but I don't have a bike and don't really want to invest the big bucks to buy one right off. My city has a bike sharing program, and I'm wondering if those bikes would do for easing back into biking. Has anyone here has used bike sharing for fitness, transportation, or both?

Do fire stations accept leftover goodies?
Yesterday was my birthday. My mom wanted to be sure I was happy, so she made me promise to buy myself a birthday cake - with candles! - and, the vagaries of Mom-management being what they are, I did. (Trust me, it's so much easier this way.) I've bought the cake I most wanted, taken pictures for evidence, and eaten my…

I Gained 4 Pounds In My Sleep! (or else my scale needs new batteries)
So, I weigh myself far too often, sometimes several times a day (but that's so that I enter the data in a spreadsheet and geek out over things like whether the daily incremental change exceeds the standard deviation of my 10-day moving average (if I didn't do all that, I might have to get a life or something...)). And I…

Low-end fitness tracker for beginning fitness walker
I'm so far out of shape that I can barely see "shape" from here, and I'm planning to start taking fitness walks. And, of course, I'm thinking about what sort of nifty new gadget I can invest in to make it "official." ;) But I also know next to nothing about fitness trackers. What I'd like would be something that can tell…

Grandma Lydia's Boiled Raisin Cake
There's a thread where a bunch of us are going to hell in a double-decker handbasket; provisioned with all the gooey, sugary, sinful, calorie-dense "Diet No-No's" we can fit on board. >:) >:) >:) I'm bringing my Grandmother's Boiled Raisin Cake with Chocolate Frosting. Someone asked for the recipe, so here it is. Warning…

Where does "first week water weight" come from/what is it?
I lost 7 pounds this week. However, this is neither a miracle nor a cause for alarm, because I am extremely obese (7 lbs = 2.2% of my starting weight), and this is my first week. It's first week water weight. This is accepted dieting wisdom, and has been empirically demonstrated by countless new dieters. But what is it,…

Ever heard of "Heavy Bones"?
People on my mom's side of the family often seem to be about 20 lbs heavier then most people with the same height and general shape. Mom has also said that this is because we all have "heavy bones." OTOH, people on my mom's side of the family also tend to be overweight, so it might be an excuse/lie/familial urban legend.…

The Need for Speed
I'm starting out on my 100-lb-plus weight loss journey - yet again - and so I've been thinking out things like my goal weight, target intakes, and what rate of weight loss to aim for. I ran across this great idea last night - if I simply eat at the intake level needed to maintain at my goal weight, and I gradually increase…

High protein, low calorie, low fat, low carb, low cholestero
Quick, name all you can think of! ....Are there any* other than egg whites? (*Preferably not involving soy, peas, beans, lentils, garbanzos/chickpeas, etc. - I have an allergy to almost all legumes.)

Re Comments: a confession & request for help...
Okay, I love my MFP friends, and I want to support and encourage them the best I can. (And to any of my MFP friends who read this, I very much hope this doesn't make you value my comments any less.) But I'm about to break my brain trying to think of encouraging comments to make. I don't want to make the same comment over…

NSV - I got taller!!! (well, sorta...)
Been working on "Project Evelyn" about 4 weeks now, and have lost 10 lbs (SV's are nice, too :) . One of the things I've been doing is adhering much more faithfully to a daily stretching routine that I've done on and off for years. I carry lots of tension in my muscles - especially in my shoulders, which are almost always…

Fat & 49, aiming to be Fit & 50
Hi, I'm Evelyn - I'm 49, 5'9" & weigh 302 lbs. Two weeks ago, my doctor told me that I was dangerously borderline for both Type II Diabetes and Coronary Artery Disease. I can't afford to get either of those - not that anyone can - but I'm already coping with severe CFS/Fibromyalgia. So that's the pathetic/awful part. The…
