Low-end fitness tracker for beginning fitness walker

Options
I'm so far out of shape that I can barely see "shape" from here, and I'm planning to start taking fitness walks. And, of course, I'm thinking about what sort of nifty new gadget I can invest in to make it "official." ;)

But I also know next to nothing about fitness trackers. What I'd like would be something that can tell me how far I've walked and what my elevation gain/loss is, more accurately than plotting it on google maps. Can I do that on an iPhone 7? Or is there an inexpensive wrist-based tracker that would be good for that?

You could use a free version of Strava.

If you use an android or iphone you can use it to count your steps, some have inbuilt step counters, other phones you can download a step counting app.

tom's guide is also pretty good
it is a very personal decision, so it can be hard for us to suggest without asking a million questions
