  • I'm an Aucklander as well!! :) Loving the weather at the moment...
  • I finished earlier this year, and I'm now onto training for my first half marathon (eeee!). My one bit of advice is to trust the program - there were so many times early on that I doubted I would be able to complete all the running segments. But I amazed myself everytime by not only completing them, but by actually…
  • I have always been quite a quick breather when I work out. I've now gotten into the pattern when I am going quite hard to do two counts of breathing in, and one breathing out - with each count being a step. So in-in-out. I like having something to focus on while I'm running, and making sure I am exhaling on alternative…
  • Everyone is different - I am 27 and my heart rate frequently gets into the low 190s (not for long, but I still see it there sometimes). It is usually around the mid 180s. I run pretty intensely twice a week, and do slower runs three times a week. Even on my less intense runs, I am still around 170-180 the whole time, again…
  • Buy a new, more flattering dress?
  • Ohhhhh, so that's what I've been doing wrong! Then again, I havent eaten pie in years - let alone a third slice, I dont own a donkey, I drink about 1.5-2L of water a day (at least), and I run about 25km a week. And yet here I am, still obese. My own obesity is a symptom that will lead to other diseases if I stop taking…
  • I did a couple of Pump classes before my gym membership ran out. I had a HRM at the time, and in a 90 minute class, I burned 700 odd calories. However, this was right at the beginning of my training so I was still quite unfit, and my heartrate was probably elevated from that which could skew the predicted calorie burn. But…
  • And in seriousness, you cant spot reduce. If you could, I would transfer the fat in my boobs to some other part of my body. No amount of situps or keeping away from bananas will help get rid of your ab fat. And your genetics might make that entirely impossible in the first place. Eat less, do more.
  • I'm not sure if you will have heard of it or not, its a pretty new fad out there - its called 'eat less, do more'. But shh... dont go telling everyone my secret!
  • I have a FT40, and I was having the same problem. Only it was telling me that my heart rate was at 220, before dropping off to 0 (I was watching myself have a heart attack...). Not so bad if I hadnt left home, a bit frustrating, but annoying if I was halfway through a run to realise that my heart rate wasnt being tracked…
  • BMI is a pretty generic formula that is easy to calculate, and is probably pretty relevant for a significant amount of the adult population. The standard equation doesn't take body composition into account at all, which is much more important when you're looking at things like obesity, than the snapshot that your weight…
  • I started C25K in February, and I now log about 25km a week in prep for my first half in November. I too cant afford a gym membership, or I would be there at the moment (its winter here, and motivation to go outside is a bit sparse at the moment). The only expense I've got coming up will be a new pair of shoes, but that's…
  • Thank you for posting this! I was going to stay in bed and have a long sleep in today, get over the long tiring week. But I decided to get up and out into the cold and do my run anyway. And it did get better. And now I feel great!
  • Such an awesome feeling - I love being the fat girl running around the park! Congratulations :)
  • I get up into the 190s for brief periods during my runs. I finished C25K last week, and throughout the program my peak has been around 185-192 for the whole nine weeks, averaging about 180. My heart rate, according to the generic calculation, should be no higher than 184, but I'm not too panicked that I always exceed this.
  • Sorry, I know its off topic a bit, but insulin is a peptide hormone made up of amino acids. So you've just said that one peptide hormone (insulin), is not absorbed in the GI tract, but that another peptide hormone (RBST), can be? Did I miss something?
  • I've been on total thyroxine replacement literally all my life. I wasnt the best taker of my tablets through my teenage years, and there were a few occasions, I am ashamed to say, that I went days, if not almost a week without taking them (this despite my mums best attempts). Whenever one of these periods of not taking…
  • My cat does this! He will be sleeping on his side, then must start dreaming about running, because his arms and legs are going like there is no tomorrow. Then he stops and twitches a little and goes back to his deep sleep.
  • Auckland Uni is being a bit slow this year, and we wont get to pick up our tshirts until Friday! But I swear I had another week to train...
  • I was born without a thyroid gland, and was normal weight until I got to puberty. But as I've come to realise, it wasn't the thyroid gland that made me fat, it was the Wendys! I ate a calorie excess for all four years I was doing my undergraduate, and surprise surprise, weighed 120kg at the end of uni (I was 70kg at 16,…
  • Same thing for me - I've extended my warm up to 10 minutes (gives me time to get from my front door to the park), and my first mile or so (or the first run really now) is the worst. But after that I seem to have warmed up properly and am fine for the rest of it. Lol and it is almost fun!! Not while Im doing it exactly, but…
  • 6 days old - it was picked up in the heel prick test (luckily!)
  • Thats how I feel when Im hypo or hyper - I just sleep tonnes, but wake up still feeling exhausted. It will get better on medication - you just need to give it time to kick in. Hope it works out for you!!
  • I'm on my second go - I started in December, but then got a virus that knocked me back for about a month. I'm just about to start week 5 - every week (except week 2), Ive found myself saying 'this is definitely my favorite week!!', but I loved week 4, and I love that I can now run a solid chunk of time (I started out…
  • I was born without a thyroid gland, and thus my thyroid demands need to be met by medication, so I cant help with the first part of your question. However, when my medication hasnt been right, I've always found that when I've been hypothyroid, it takes maybe a couple of days for me to feel immediately better, even if just…
  • I'm signed up! I walked my first one last year in a time just shy of 90 minutes, but I've been doing a C25K-esque plan since the new years, and I'm aiming for a sub 70-minute time this year. I jog/walk 6k's about 4 times a week.
  • Weighed myself this morning for the first time in 3 weeks, following 2 work Christmas functions, Christmas and a lot of wine (not to mention the emotional eating after a breakup). Zero effect on my weight! So happy with that!!!
  • This may be a silly question, but are you currently on the pill? Endometriosis runs in my family, and although I havent been diagnosed (but I do have killer period pains every month), since going on the pill my symptoms have reduced heck of alot - I also used to spend 24-48 in agony (couldnt move without being sick for the…
  • I've gotten hooked on spin class again at the gym, so 3x spin classes a week. Plus Im going to do C25K three mornings a week before work. I also want to get serious about weights when Im at the gym (not necessarily on spin days, but Ill see how it goes). I want to not be afraid of going to the weights part of the gym!!
  • I just got a HRM last weekend, and already Ive found some pretty interesting differences between HRM/machines/MFP estimates. Last night I warmed up on the treadmill before a spin class - my HRM said 140 cals, the machine said 110 cals, and MFP suggested 172 calories. Then in spin class my HRM said 681 calories, whereas MFP…
