I like to keep it simple like that.

Here's a good test. Go and run as many miles as you can at 6:51/mile. If you can make it 26.2 miles, you can do a sub-3 hour marathon.

Looks like I made a mistake signing up for marathons 2 weeks apart then. Running the MS Blues Marathon on 1/11/15 and then the RnR New Orleans 1/25/15. I'm hoping to PR at the RnR New Orleans. We shall see.

I need to look into this TDEE. Looks like I'm not only running every training run too fast, but also not really watching what I eat. Those are a combination for success in running, right? Lol
-
Hope the rain up there hasn't been too brutal!

Toenails? What are those?

Building speed isn't just about the quantity of miles; the quality of miles is just as important. Also, nailing a tempo run helps you get stronger mentally. Once you see that you can run X:XX/mile for however many miles, then you'll really start to see results. A lot of what holds people back from taking that next step is…

I must be doing all of my training runs too fast. Probably am. Oh well!
-
You nailed it. Basically you'll want to do tempo runs, some fartlek, and hills. I'd do tempo runs of 2x 3-4m @ race pace with 5 minute jog between. That should give you a good idea of the shape you're in.

First 20 miler is a huge accomplishment. Still blows my mind when I look down at my Garmin and see 20.00. However, as you get mentally stronger, 20m will become easier. Breaking it down into 4 5 mile runs helps avoid being overwhelmed.

I'd hate to see what I'd weight if I didn't run. My appetite is constant.

McMillan is pretty close to spot-on for me from 1m to marathon.

Add me to the commando list. Can't say I've ever considered wearing anything under my running shorts.

Def hot

Yea, felt really good, especially in your hometown race. Like I said, I just wish the course was flat so I didn't have to travel to New Orleans to see if I can break 2:40.
-
Ha, great advice there. I think my first half was around 1:19:50 so probably closer to 1:23ish on the second half.
-
Thanks Dave. That time was on the Blues. I feel like I could have broken 2:40 on a flat course and better temperatures, but I was happy with that effort on that day. Split Time 1 06:20.8 2 06:07.1 3 06:00.4 4 05:50.3 5 06:12.0 6 06:02.4 7 06:06.1 8 06:04.7 9 06:06.2 10 06:10.0 11 06:07.5 12 06:15.5 13 06:05.1 14 06:13.3…

New marathon PR Saturday..2:43:26 Still crashed a little in the miles 21-26, but not near as bad as I have in the past.

Garmin Forerunner 405 here. Works great with the HRM as well. Had it for almost 10,000 miles now and it's never let me down. Just make sure you lock the bezel. it doesn't handle sweat well.
-
Great job! I did the full and the course is brutal. People don't realize how many hills we have in MS. I wish I could post a picture of the elevation chart for the marathon course.

Nice Lexus.

You'd probably come out on the right side of that bet. Plus, the last 5-6 miles were mostly incline, which certainly didn't help. I'm taking another stab at the same race (minimal course changes) on Saturday. Hoping to run a little smarter / faster.

I did a marathon when it was 16F. It was cold, but wasn't terrible because the wind wasn't a factor. Having said that, give me 40F and sunny and I'm a happy guy.

This is what hitting the wall looks like on a Garmin.
