  • I second this. Running shoes may help if you have bad form but the key to avoiding injury is form. I wear vibram 5 fingers with no padding to run. Make sure you land on the balls of your feet, not the heels. It will take time to develop the muscles and connecting tissue in your feet and lower leg, but the ankle and knee…
  • Cleats. Seriously, a friend thats been an avid runner for years slipped on a small patch of ice while running earlier this year and broke his ankle. He was in a cast and then a walking boot for months.
  • Not a woman, but I have noticed that as I lose weight and get more fit the bike experience gets more comfortable overall. The weight loss part is obvious, but when you are putting more of your weight on the pedals instead of the seat and handlebars that helps too.
  • Just keep moving!
  • I was diagnosed with RA 20 years ago. With me it was only in my hand, so its not quite comparable to what you're going through. The worst part was the fatigue. Some days I could barely move I was so tired. They treated it with cortisone shots and drugs like methotrexate and NSAIDs. I took that for a couple years until I…
  • At my annual physical I would always have my dr. prescribe a 3 day z-pac (antibiotic) to take with on backpacking and canoe trips, just in case. It came in handy a couple of times. Backpacking with a cold or fever is no fun.
  • See a doctor. I had similar fatigue and ended up being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
  • I've used rubbing alcohol after scuba diving for years. If you look at the stuff they sell at the drug store its mostly rubbing alcohol. I would guess hydrogen peroxide would work just as well. You're only putting it in the outer ear and the ear drum blocks it from the inner ear. Anything that kills the bacteria you pick…
  • Heh. No its mens shoes too. I take a B width and its tough to find shoes that fit. Oversize shoes don't usually cause blisters unless I'm on a long hike, but sometimes people try to compensate for wide shoes by getting a shorter shoe and that can cause problems too. Anyway, if the problem is that your street shoes don't…
  • I don't know about the shape of your feet, but the problem seems to be that your shoes don't fit. Stay away from the high volume shoe stores and try one that specializes in fitting people with odd size feet. If your shoes are too wide that can sometimes cause problems and you may be able to fill up some of the space with…
  • I don't use that app, but you have to remember that whatever you use, its just an estimate. I don't think you'll ever get two sources to agree on calories burned.
  • Its great to exercise seven days a week. Individual muscles may need a rest day to recover if you are heavy lifting, but aerobic exercise you can (should) do everyday. Having said that, its a real good idea to mix it up. Run long and slow one day, bike the next, do sprints the following etc. Mix it up so you don't get…
  • You're doing great. Its like quitting smoking, it gets easier as time goes on and eventually you'll look at the junk and be repelled instead of wanting to pig out. As you lose the weight and tone up you just start feeling better and better. And younger. Keep it up.
  • Thank you for sharing your story.
  • Instead of a rest day make today an easy day. It works so much better if you just exercise every day. They don't all have to be hard the point is to get out and do something. Otherwise that day off stretches in to two or three or four or .... Also, if you're sore a little walking today will help work it out.
  • I can't recommend the book Convict Conditioning enough. It shows progressively more difficult versions of six different exercises so you can start at a very low level and work your way up. Between the six exercises you can get a full body workout. Besides needing less equipment I find it takes much less time than weights…
  • I do body weight strength training at home three days per week. I use the Convict Conditioning program. No special equipment is needed until you progress to the point where you're doing pull ups.
  • IU found that the best use of my heart rate monitor was to slow me down.
  • I use the ibiker ap with the wahoo dongle. I vary the hr zones for variety. Ibiker uses zones 1-5, if i'm running long I'll stay in zones 2 and 3. I'm sorry I can't help more, I'm interested in the answers too.
  • I always found that a couple beers improved my german fluency.
  • I suspect that much of the joint pain people encounter is from connective tissue injury. Exercise can help build and condition the ligaments and tendons so long slow runs and strength training may help build them up over time. Overdoing it is going to hurt though. I was always in pain for a couple days after a 13 mile run…
  • Most pants sold today can't be taken in by a tailor. If they can you'll find a vertical seam in the center back of the waistband. If the seam's not there they can't be properly taken in.
  • You'll also burn more calories if the temperature is lower. But remember, in any case you're only estimating calories and they could be off some amount either way based on a number of factors. What really matters is that you are doing it and if you're counting calories that closely ere on the side of caution.
  • I just bought some 31/32 jeans at Farm & Fleet. I don't recall how thin they went, but they had a lot of brands there. Sorry I can't help but I'm just jumping in here so I can find this thread again in case I have a the same problem next month. I was a 28/32 at one time too.
  • If your out away from people in bear country you could carry a 12 ga. shotgun loaded with rifled slugs at port arms. You'd get a good workout for your upper body too. If you're in Canada there are short barreled shotguns available for bear defense, unfortunately they're not legal in the US.
  • On long runs I carry a small roll of athletic tape. If I feel a blister coming on I stop and tape the area to protect it.
  • When I was in high school cc the coaches didn't run, when we did road work they drove behind us. I suspect a part of the reason was that they would be more available in case of a problem. Although they were in decent shape I'm sure they couldn't have kept up anyway. I've been thinking about how we trained as I get back…
  • Most people have no idea what they are capable of doing. And there are plenty of posts in the Success Stories forum to prove it.
  • Its not just about weight. People would love to get good grades in school or learn a language, but don't want to study more. They'd love to earn more money, but don't want to work longer hours or at a more stressful job. That's just the way people are. The key is to realize what a thinner body or better grades costs in…
  • Some churches in my area have weekly zumba classes.
