• Yikes about the underwater current! Fortunately my swim is in a lake ... I don't think it's large enough to have currents. Also, I just looked at your other post ... wow, that's hardcore! Congratulations on making it, that sounded grueling! This event is very small, in a quiet lake with no powerboats but lots of people in…
• Thanks! I usually breathe every third stroke; I do every fourth when I start out, for one or two laps, and I breathe every other stroke when I'm sprinting and need the oxygen. Today I tried doing two sets of 20 laps each (0.57 mile per set -- I figured the little bit of extra distance will make up for the fact that I'm…
• Yoga Journal also offers a free 21 day yoga challenge. Every day they email you a video link, for 21 days. You can choose beginner or intermediate. The links to all 42 workouts are available here: http://www.yogajournal.com/21daychallenge/dailynewsletter/ . Or you could just sign up for the challenge…

• I agree with all those who said to start out taking some classes. You can then move on to doing it on your own, once you know the correct form. Yogadownload.com has loads of free 20 minute video and audio classes. I ended up buying a membership so I could purchase the longer ones. Congratulations on picking up yoga, by the…

• Yogadownload.com has a bunch of audio and video files. They have quite a few free 20 minute ones, plus longer ones available for purchase. I have several of the audios on my mp3 player. I know the poses so I frankly don't use the videos much. I've found them to be pretty good (though of course some instructors are better…
• I wanted something that conveyed whimsey without being twee. And I love lemurs.
• I have an easy recipe for curried kidney beans with potatoes that I posted last year. Here's the link: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1086563-curried-kidney-beans
• If swimming is too much, most pools will have walking lane. Try that. The water will provide support, releasing some of the weight from your joints. And water also provides something like 14 times as much resistance as air, so if you walk for 20 minutes, or even 10, you're getting more exercise than if you walked the same…
• I posted full body shots earlier in this thread but I think these face shots show the change even better: December 2012: 119 lbs January 2013: 220 lbs January 2014: 185 lbs
• Dave Barry once wrote something along the lines of "Unless you actually see a baby physically exiting a woman at that moment, never ask a woman if she is pregnant." Good advice.
• If you're new to yoga than a class would really help, because an instructor can provide feedback on your postures. (No point doing them wrong and getting used to it.) However, if that's not feasible, or once you have, I've found dozens of free yogo workouts (mostly audio and some video) at yogadownload.com. You can search…
• Let's see if this works (first time posting pics). 11 months and 29 pounds apart.
• That is truly amazing. Congratulations on your dedication and your success!
• I really, really hope that's a typo for weed eater.
• Hard call. Buster Keaton. Or Jack Benny. (A lot of my favorite dead celebrities were real jerks in real life -- bitter, angry, egotistic and chauvinistic misanthropes -- and would not make good conversationalists. I've eliminated quite a few who would probably just tell me to jump in a lake.)
• All I can add is, Wow!!! Great job!
• I have an FT4, and I never need to re-wet it. If it's hot or if I'm already sweaty I don't even bother wetting it at all. (I tend to sweat very freely.) When I bought it, I also bought two tubes of some electrode gel with it -- I forget the brand name but there are plenty of options, less than five bucks for a very large…
• I never had any dread coming up to 40, so it was never a big deal. I had a few friends say 41/42 is when you begin to decline, and indeed I find that I'm now more likely to need bright light to read small print, for example. However, 42 is when I joined MFP and started lifting weights, and I am in much better shape now (at…
• "Dotcom" goes well with anything. Hannah Dotcom, Jared Dotcom, whatever.
• Congratulations! I hit it back in July, for the first time in years, and I remember how good it felt! Keep up the good work!
• Planks work your core like crazy. I could barely do 20 seconds when I started this summer. I did two minutes 10 sec yesterday. Had some pretty stiff abs today! You wouldn't think simply holding still would be so much work.
• My wife has issues with both gluten and dairy, so most of my diet at home reflects that. I often make fruit smoothies, using lactose-free protein powder (and peanut butter and soymilk or almond milk and frozen fruit). Or I have toast (Udi's makes a pretty nice GF bread), with peanut butter. I also have a recipe for peanut…
• Wow! You've done an amazing job so far, way to go! You look great. Also -- I don't think I've ever seen a picture of you without your riding helmet on. You've got hair! Who knew?
• Best of luck! I've had friends and family members who've had knees (and hips) replaced. It's not necessarily easy (though none of them dropped a bunch of weight as you did, so I'm sure that puts you in a better position). But in all cases, they found it was a better alternative than continuing with the pain and limited…
• I hadn't heard about this yet. RIP Madiba, you will be missed. Nkosi sikelel iafrika.
• I personally love almonds and cashews. But make sure you use a digital scale if you're trying to maintain a deficit -- a little of them goes a long way! I weigh out an ounce (one serving) in advance, put it in a ziplock and keep it in my car for a snack. It's a surprisingly small amount. In the old days I would have eaten…
•
Check for what? Contraband?
We always check each other for ticks after a hike. Does that count?
• There is always going to be some part of your body that's the last to lose fat. For some it's the tummy, others the butt or thighs. Perhaps for you it's the chest. Spot training won't help -- you can do all the chest exercises you want, but you won't lose the moobs until you lose the body fat. And if you've been doing this…
• Bump. (I don't have anything substantive to add, besides just repeating what others have said: you'll gain strength early on, and lifting heavy is relative.)
• Can you walk in the pool? It's walking, yes, but the water provides lots of support. Or can you even try swimming? How about a recombinant bike -- the kind where you sit upright, as in a chair, with only your legs moving? They make recombinant stationary bikes, which probably use the back even less.
