I take it you were responding to the person before that removed their comment about fasting? As I agree, while I may fast for a personal/faith reason from time to time, it's not about weight loss. I want to just eat good food, enjoy life, and find a healthy balance for the long term ... no dieting here ...

You can keep your body hydrated on coke zero and crystal light ... if you want enough not to die of dehydration, then drink enough fluids of your choice. I would agree. It would be interesting to take two groups of unhelathy people (of whatever characteristics) and put one group on a specific calorie diet of whole vegan food, and the other a whole food diet that included animal products.
