  • :/ I actually do blood testing in a lab setting, it is preferred for a baseline. It does depend why you're testing though some acne meds or steroids require you to have lipids checked, doesn't matter if youre fasting for them in most cases. If you've ever seen someone's blood right after they eat come in or are…
  • There's a reason you fast prior to having them taken.... they've already proven high cholesterol foods don't increased lipids. I guess I should have specified simple carbs and processed ones?
  • Yeah I'm 9 stone, 25 years old and 5'0. If you have additional risk factors including family history of CAD or stroke and high blood pressure then I would worry a bit more. American standards on cholesterol might be different though since a majority of our population runs so high...
  • Honestly that isn't horrible, it's similar to mine and im of a normal weight. Do you have other risk factors? Our lab doesn't use mmol calc so I had to convert it.
  • I'm confused by what score of 7 is. Did they not give actual LDL TG HDL and cholesterol total values? And carbs will increase cholesterol/TG/LDL, you can add omega 3 fatty acids to help your HDL.
  • I had a coworker whos BMI shouldn't have qualified but they take into account comorbidities for lower BMIs such as knee, joint and back pain. So idk :| depends on each case
  • Are you letting your blood sugar get too low? When I have idiopathic hypoglycemic episodes I just shovel in anything sweet I can get.
  • This. If you're worried about foods that contribute to your cholesterol and LDL, carbs raise it significantly more than protein/fats. Lab tech/biochemist
  • Chips make me really sad. Those small bags you can buy at the convenience store are like 500 calories. I love chips. :'( :'( I switched over to chex mix since it feels a bit denser and less calories for how much you get.
  • I just got the Alta HR by fitbit, and a coworker just got the Charge 2 because he thought the Alta wasn't manly enough. They both do about the same function. They're running brand new on eBay for about $100 too so you might save more money compared to other trackers with a heart rate monitor included.
  • I suppose you need to take your BMR in to account with that, I know fitbit tracks that. Just working regularly at my lab job and BMR it tracks me around 1800-2000 calories burned in a day total, I think it over tracks steps a lot so it overcompensates calories burned. If that was actually true i'd be melting weight off :D…
  • No, the hospital I work at had a scale that gives you an idea of what it is using your weight and height. It's used for patients that have had bariatric surgery as well, so I assume if it's correctly calibrated it's relatively accurate. Your doctor could also use a caliper too if you were really interested as a starting…
  • Get your body fat percentage checked. I'm 5 foot 128lbs, everyone is like why are you on a diet? I'm not overweight but close. My percentage was 26.4% should be below 25%. So maybe what you need is more to tone than anything.
  • It's like $4 in southern Iowa. Good thing its the one food I'm willing to shell some extra money out of. Cause I love ice cream. I just got pancakes and waffles so very sweet. Strawberry and mocha chip are probably my favorites. I just tried pumpkin pie, the crust pieces are weird... the rainbow sherbet is gross.
  • Depends what you're doing, if you don't think you burned many calories that day I would ignore the extra calories added. If you worked out a lot, I'd eat some of them back. I think I ate about 50% back when I was working out.
  • Condiments. :/ I like my dipping sauces, but I use at least two packets and they are 50 cal a piece.
  • Your PCP can order them. Just let them know your diagnosis, why you need them checked and they can order them, just let them know what lab you plan on going to. My pediatrician ordered my initial labs that gave my diagnosis. Don't pay out of pocket for tests, you'll be spending like $500 on tests that are covered by…
  • I know this is a late posting but most sugar alcohols in a moderate quantity cause diarrhea. I have never experienced this, but see see the case of "sugar free gummy bears" as example.
  • MFP has me at 1200 5'0, 128lbs, which is only a problem if I go out to eat. I feel like recently I've just been eating filler calories to get up to around 1200 though. Does 1000 seem like enough or will that make it harder to lose?
  • I take Zarah which is a generic of Yasmin. Yaz is definitely not the same. I was accidentally put on Yaz for a month and gained a large amount of weight and felt awful because it offset my period by over a week- any other BC could have done this too but just shows the hormones don't work the same. If Yasmin worked for you,…
  • I think I only ate half of a mini Blue Bunny ice cream cup when I had mine out, using a baby spoon, for like 4 or 5 days. It sounds like you are able to eat much more than I was though. An Ensure drink might be good, sans a straw.
  • I've been taking it since I was 12, for PCOS, it helped with that as my hair stopped falling out. I take Ocella, and I don't really see a difference in acne, but it might depend on the person. The thing about gaining weight really depends on the type. A lot of people I know who use Depo have gained A LOT of weight. I've…
  • This. You most likely need to be placed back on your birth control pills to regulate your cycle and to decrease your testosterone levels, at least for awhile until you get your insulin and weight under better management. Birth control is a first line treatment in ovarian cysts and high testosterone levels. I have PCOS but…
  • The birth control should shrink ovarian cysts, which is what clinically should be causing the symptoms, by decreasing the levels of testosterone or equalizing levels of estrogen and progesterone which would effectively treat the formation of new and old cysts. There are also progesterone only pills which could be used if…
  • I'd speak with your doctor about birth control- it needs to be a hormonal type so no copper IUD's, it should help with endometriosis and ovarian cysts. It also helps control your testosterone level which is probably elevated, may even out your mood and weight, clear up acne. Not too many downsides unless you smoke or are…
  • Really they tell you to eat healthy food due to nutrient content, if you are hitting your macros or whatever, then it's no big deal. Healthy food also tends to be lower in calories than "junk food". Otherwise, if you aren't trying to hit nutrient content eating healthy probably isn't helping you that much. But whatever…
  • If you feel like 1490 is too high you can also go lower as long as you feel full enough. I no longer track calories but at 5" 21 years old, 130lbs I was at 1300 calories. If you aren't moving a lot it works fine, but if you work out you'll probably need about 200 calories more.
  • ...Are you deficient in salt or not having enough dairy?
  • I also agree, I have PCOS and if you do have a calorie deficit you'll lose the weight. Having a lower estrogen level would actually make it easier for you to lose weight... If you had something like insulin resistance or diabetes there could be an issue at play there though...
  • If you have ovarian cysts with hirsutism (which is usually caused by increased testosterone or decreased estrogen) that is often enough to make a diagnosis of PCOS, you only need like 2 of the symptoms. I had increased testosterone along with those so they put me on birth control with only that information. No other…
