  • When you say knee and hip, does the pain run between the 2 up the outside of your leg? Could be a very tight IT band, which is a pretty common issue with runners...especially when you just start running. There are tons of resources online for IT band stretches. I also use a foam roller and something like BioFreeze or…
  • I haven't tried them, but I've heard good things about them from a couple of runner friends. One was struggling with knee pain wearing "running" shoes and she has reduced her pain wearing the Vibrams. I have recently gone to bare foot workouts (week 2 of Insanity) because I was having foot cramps while working out wearing…
  • Google "progressive muscle relaxation" or "relaxation techniques". These have helped me!
  • Do you like greek yogurt? I am eating granola in mine right now...the granola is my non-fruit/veg carb hit for the day! A protein-rich combo too!
  • Also, FYI..I began Insanity after losing 39 pounds..13 pounds from goal weight. My month 1 results were: Weight: -6 pounds Bust: -2 inches Waist: -2 inches Hips: -1 inch I have set MFP down to "lose 0.5 pounds per week" to increase my calorie intake and ensure that I am feeding my body properly to fuel it for Insanity!
  • I started month 2 today...love Insanity! Add me if you like!
  • Crohn's and colitis run in my family and I've been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I got good advice from a naturopath on eating a high protein diet, with lots of soft foods. Snacks that I enjoy are greek yogurt, cottage cheese, hard boiled eggs. When I want/need a carb in my life, I like an english muffin with…
  • Just spoke to my doc about this, as well as slightly thinner hair and a few other concerns. She said that these problems are very common with women who are losing/have lost significant amounts of weight. As you lose weight, your brain signals for a decrease in production of 2 hormones. She ordered blood tests and said if…
  • I am running my first half on April 29th! I hope to finish in around 2:15. Do you have a goal in mind?
  • Tomorrow is the last day of week 4 for me. I struggled early this week, but upped my calorie intake and today I'm feeling great! I am only 10 pounds away from my goal weight, and often people say they are the hardest 10. Insanity has helped me consistently lose between 0.5-2 pounds per week, as well as half an inch off my…
  • I was down to 1210 calories a day,, but since I started an intense workout program I have been feeling very fatigued. I set MFP to "lose 0.5 pounds per week" and increased my calories. I feel better, and I am still losing weight!
  • I'm in the middle of week 3! Legs are still a little sore (I also stand on my feet for much of the day at work so leg pain is nothing new to me!). But it does get easier, and I can see the changes in my body, which makes me feel great! Add me as a friend if you like!
  • Was just talking about this with my workout buddy tonight...we are looking for the same recipe! I hope someone here can help us out!
  • When I first started running, I had pain in my shoulders/neck...I believe because I was using proper posture instead of slouching and it was a strain on muscles that were not used to working that way! For me, after a couple of weeks, I got stronger and the pain went away. Good luck!
  • I'm starting week 3 of Insanity! After this, I'm training for my first half marathon, but then I want to try P90x because I've heard it's focused more on strength training than Insanity.
  • I've found the opposite. My stretch marks have faded, and when I tan, it highlights the difference between the pale stretch marks and the tan skin. I am at the point in my weight loss where I *could* wear a bikini, but I will have to suck it up and come to terms with stretch marks before I can comfortably wear one!…
  • I would add sodium and sugar to your food diary. I still go over on sugar each day, but most of that now comes from chocolate milk (recovery drink after workout) and fruit, instead of big sugary coffee or treat like cake.
  • Based on reading I've done, and the opinions of most of the experienced people on MFP, the auto settings for protein here are low. Don't worry about going over.
  • If the weigh-in is getting you down, take measurements and photos...they could show you the real results of your efforts. Also, weighing in the evening can show some major fluctuations based on what you ate that day, so if you really want to see a consistent weigh-in, you may want to try weighing in the morning for your…
  • You should definitely be stretching! My physiotherapist friend recommends a walk to warm up and then a stretch before running. Stretching after is very important as well! There are lots of online resources for running, here's a guide to stretching for runners that I found on runnersworld.com:…
  • I started Insanity last Sunday! I was tired and sore all week, but today I feel great! It gets better. I recommend adding a yoga/stretch once or twice a week...my workout friend and I do P90x stretch and it has helped us stay loose! Add me if you like.
  • When I started running, I had a lot of aches and pains. As my body adjusted, they got better. I started the Insanity 60 Day Challenge last week, and the aches are back! Here are a few things I am trying: -glucosamine- a supplement aimed at helping with joint pain, sometimes used by people with arthritis, but also people…
  • It worked wonders for me! I was literally NOT doing anything fitness wise before I started. I am on my feet a lot at work, but other than that...zero exercise. I started with couch 2 5 k, and it was challenging...but I had a buddy and we just went out and did our best every time. Week 2 or 3 I had brutal knee pain, but I…
  • When you feel the pain, try slowing your pace or walking for a bit and see if the pain subsides. I get shin splints when I set my pace too fast. If I slow down, the pain goes away. This happened more when I was a beginning runner than it does now that I have been running for several months.
  • You are/were my twin! I'm 5'6" and my starting weight in May 2011 was 193. Today I weighed in at 151.4! Goal weight 1 was 155 and goal weight 2 is 139. I will see if I am comfy there, or want to push a little farther when I get there!
  • I started couch 2 5k in May 2011. Loved it...it got me interested in running, health and fitness again after I gained back 30 of 40 pounds I had previously lost. After running 11.2 kms in a relay in September, I took a little break from heavy running and this fall did a hybrid of step classes, Jillian Michaels DVDs (30 DS…
  • Your story reminded me of a news article I read recently in a local newpaper, so I found it for you: http://www.leaderpost.com/health/Saskatoon+woman+recovers+from+fall+runs+half+marathon/5914760/story.html You are already a miracle! On the mornings I want to shut my alarm off and go back to sleep, I will remember your…
  • I have not been diagnosed with RLS, but before I started on MFP I was being treated for sleep problems related to anxiety and I definitely had the symptom of restless legs. Since then, I have lost 40 pounds, started working out 6 days a week, stopped taking the anxiety medication, and started sleeping well! Here are a few…
  • I am 5'6", SW was 193. I am currently down to 153.8. My first goal weight was 155, and now that I've achieved that goal I've set a new goal at 139. I did have my MFP set to lose 2 pounds per week and was down to 1280 calories before exercise. Once I hit goal 1, I changed my settings to a 1 pound per week loss and I am set…
  • Runner's World (online verion of the magazine) has free programs that you can download. One is a training program for a half marathon. The others that I found helpful/interesting included one on nutrition for runners, and injury prevention for runners. They also have a strength training program online (with video…
