I'm very happy with my Cube GTC Race and my son is even happier with his Cube Litening...both carbon and full Ultegra with good wheels. I was surprised that his Litening also came with carbon post and excellent Syntace carbon bars Althought the Litening is advertised as more "racy" than the Agree its just as comfy and a kg…

Good - been a long time since I could wear a good pair of 32" jeans Climbing Scafell Pike without feeling like im going to die Great to be slim on the beach last summer Bad - my toes get cold when i'm cycling

I cycle commute in busy traffic and always wear a helmet...I think it sends a positive message to drivers. When I'm driving and see a cyclist wearing a helmet and doing their best to be visible to me I think "...sensible guy..give him room". When I see a cyclist with no helmet, dark gear, jumping lights...I think…

If you have an iPHONE you could simply use the CycleMeter or RunMeter app (around $5 I think). You can export your rides into numerous free on-line apps.

I ride through the Winter...cycling Rule #9 :-)

Continental Gatorskins. No punctures in at least 6 months (3500 miles.) on a mix of country lanes and main roads. Excellent.

Cycled to work (24miles) :-)...and also walked 2 miles to the dentist for a tooth extraction :-(

...just to add...a few time in the wilds of Essex I lost 3G so CycleMeter on my iPhone would not show maps. So I purchased the Outdoors GB and National Parks app from the app store. Its very good and more detailed (e.g. 1:25) maps can be purchased and seamlessly added if required. I purchased the 1:25 for Essex and the…

I use my iPhone with an i-Power add on battery (£7.50 on Ebay) and good for about 10 hours. I have the CycleMeter app which is excellent (about £3.50) from the AppStore. Cycle meter support a lot of wireless HRMs etc but I dont have one. But I have asked Santa for a Garmin 800 with the 1:25 maps!

Brits proudly fail to comply with #24...we don't do much metric...distances are measured in the Queens MILES and my beer belly is measures in the Queens POUNDS

For a bet I ate 22 pickled eggs. I was very drunk at the time...and a bit unwell afterwards I remember :-(

I use the excellent Cyclemeter iPHONE app. Cyclemeter and Internet calculators I compared all seem to calculate about 1000 calories/hour at between 16-18mph. MFP calculates a bit higher than this.

My sons have Specialized Rockhopper and Specialized CrossTrail. Both are terrific bikes with good components ("Comp" versions). Not cheap but you may find a second hand one. I have a steel framed Raleigh Amazon - 20 years old, good components for its time, comfy and never any problems - these go for £60-£100 on e-BAY…

If you go the slow route can you keep motivated over the longer period? Also do you have a particular upcoming event you want to get in shape for (beach holiday, wedding etc.). These may be factors in deciding how fast you want to progress.

I eat a couple of bananas before a long ride and take one with me just incase the tea shops are closed. I figure that if they are the preferred energy food for lots of pro tennis players they must be good. Also they are pre wrapped so easy to carry. I am very bad at keeping up with hydration and have taken to setting up a…

Well there is always something to grumble about...but I keep in mind that I help make life saving anti-cancer drugs...helps me keep my minor work troubles in perspective somehow.
-
I agree with Al...but perhaps getting yourself a faster bike would give you that initial speed gain that would keep you motivated?

I use RidewithGPS (like Al Miller above). Works well and I like the way it handles altitude. I also use RouteConverter - good for converting GPS formats and retaining just the info you need in the GPS file. I am also playing around with BING as they have free 1:50 OS maps - great for planning off-road MTB and walking etc.

Longest rides for my sons - Son #1 (17) did 54m and #2 (13) did 30m last weekend. They have nice bikes purchased through the UK Cycle to Work Scheme. Best of all is that cycling gets them off their PS3s!

"Houston we have a problem" - Tom Hanks in Apollo13 John Swigert, not Jim Lovell (as played by Hanks),... actually said "Houston, we've had a problem"
