  • As someone who struggled (*and still does) with weight loss for most of my adult life, seeing the scale go up after starting CrossFit was a shocker to me. But then I noticed my clothes were getting looser, there was some actual definition to my body and my energy/stamina levels were the best they've been in years. If you…
  • If you're just looking to get the calories you've burned, there are several & inexpensive choices from both Polar and Garmin. I started with the Polar FT7 and it was great and very simple/easy to use. As I moved into triathlon training, I upgraded ($$) to a Garmin (*currently have a Garmin Forerunner 310XT). There are also…

  • I'm finally back . . . Took some time off to recoup and definitely added some pounds along the way. So glad to be back on-track, foccussed and moving my *kitten* again!!! Since February is a short month, so I'll keep it simple with a goal of 100 miles. *ps: We have been getting a blizzard a week here in New England, so my…
  • I created an "CrossFit" exercise in the category/type of Cardiovascular. From time to time, I will wear my HRM to gauge/measure my caloric burn. Because of the variation from WOD to WOD, I basically guesstimate the caloric burn based on WOD and enter it into MFP (*if not wearing my HRM).
  • Woke up this morning to -17F (*approx. -27 C) in NH . . . My dog did not want to go outside this morning ... I told him I get my coat and keep him company & he was like "you go 1st". **It did warm-up to about 12F today.

  • I'm turing 43 this year and have been working on getting fit and healthy for the past 5 years (*finally*). Have done several 5ks, 10ks and a couple of Halfs. I have done 3 sprint Triathlons and my plan is to enter AND complete/finish a Half-Ironman this year. Currently developing a training plan and getting back on track…
  • Happy New Year !!! My list is pretty simple (I think) and will re-evaluate it as we get closer to spring/summer . . . 1) Hands down the biggest thing - I need to get back to eating better/cleaner. I need to lose the weight, more specifically the fat I've gained over the holidays. It's 100% my fault. 2) Develop a training…
  • The day went great . . . There were almost 80 competitors (33 males and 46 females), so the box was packed w/ athletes and supporters. Here's how things went for me: WOD #1: Managed to finish the 12/12 count and got 1 burpee into the 15/15 round. I'm glad my judge helped me count. As for the wall balls, I got 21 done in 1…
  • Also, check back with how your clothes fit after a month. I've found that my weight has increased or held steady since starting CrossFit, but I've gotten leaner and/or have gone down a size. But as someone who has struggled with weight for most of his life, its very hard not to look at that number on the scale. **Good…
  • Bostonwolf - Thanks for the tips/suggestions. I've been practicing these elements since last week and plan to work/focus more on the front squats tomorrow. *and lateral burpees are defintely not my favorite.
  • Check out your local YMCA or other gyms - many offer a "winter swimmer" rate or a pay as you swim non-member rate. I can bring guests to my YMCA and they just pay a small fee to swim and/or can also use the entire gym. I too, am overweight and wasn't much of a swimmer until I got back into the pool. It's a great option for…
  • This will be my 3rd year of participating in the opens . . . I've always done them, even though I've known that at some point, I wouldn't be able to finish or even lift the weight at Rx. This new scaled division should make it more interesting, fun and more popular for people who may have sat-out previous years. So yeah,…

  • This may not work for everybody, but it has worked for me . . . I compete in triathlons and as a result do a lot of run training. (*BTW - CrossFit has helped me go faster and farther). Normally, I get a new pair of running shoes each year. What I have found is that the previous year's shoes have made excellent WOD shoes.…
  • As I moved into my 40's, I have found that mixing in days of "other" forms of cardio has helped my sore muscles and renewed my endurance for CrossFit. The other types of cardio that I have been doing are: Swimming; Spinning; Yoga, including Bikram; and some light running. I still get to CrossFit 3x week and if I'm just…

  • I have an additional family memberhsip at the local YMCA ($75 / month). They have several classes (yoga, spin, etc.) that I participate in. They also have an indoor pool and track which is great when the cold & snow arrives. I will use the weight room for general strength training and conditoning. It allows for a nice…

  • I have been CrossFitting now over 2 years and stil haven't been able to Rx several workouts. A lot of it has to do with my age (43) and the previous wear & tear on my body (knees, shoulders, etc.) defintely effects my performance . . . But the gains I have made are amazing to me and I continue to push myself to be better,…
