Give up junk food or make room for it in your diet?
I need to eat 1500-1800 calories a day to lose weight when I'm working out. I eat lunch and dinner and leave room for a drink and/or a little snack to keep me sane. Sometimes (every other week?) I have pizza. I try to eat light the rest of the day to balance. Sometimes I have a bagel and try to go easy to make up for the…

Earned calories are way too much - how to adjust?
47yo F SW:219 (8/2/20) CW: 211 I lost 25 pounds 3 years ago eating around 1500-1600 calories most days, up to 1900-2000 on workout days. Gained it back so I'm here to do it again. I'm walking more these days (17k step average) because gyms in NY are still closed and I'm still eating in the same calorie range and losing (8…

Premier Protein bars
Premier protein bars used to be my favorites - especially the yogurt peanut crunch - but they changed the formulation and I don't like them anymore. For anyone who liked the Premier bars, is there any bar like it out there? I've tried lots of other brands but haven't been able to find anything similar.

Struggle with cardio - will it get better over time?
My cardio health is severely lacking in my opinion. I can't run a quarter mile without stopping to catch my breath. I work out, lift heavy, take circuit classes, some cross fit style classes, but I always struggle with the cardio. Is this something everyone can improve on? Or are some people just not built for cardio?…

True weight gain vs true weight loss
I know people talk about gaining 3 pounds in a day or a weekend and it's really water weight from a variety of reasons and not "true" weight gain. So what about weight loss? When you have a whoosh, is the new low actually true loss or can you be a lower weight for other non permanent reasons (like being dehydrated as…

Front squats
Tried these for the first time and didn't have great luck keeping the barbell stable (probably obvious from all the black and blues!) Are front squats working a different group of muscles than back squats? Not sure if I should keep trying to improve my form and be able to hold my elbows up better so the bar doesn't keep…

Working out consecutive days
I know when you do strength training you're supposed to give your muscles worked a rest day, but what about classes at the gym? I do these functional circuit training classes that are always different - you never know what you're doing till you walk in that day. One class may be burpees and deadlifts and TRX work, one may…

Ravenous after a good workout
I've been taking circuit training classes at my gym - all slightly different but all *kitten* kickers. Lots of jump squats, weighted lunges, push ups, KB swings, burpees plus treadmill, rower, high knees..... pouring sweat by the end. Unfortunately I'm also RAVENOUS when I get home. I want to eat literally all the things.…

Calories way off when I switched from zip to alta
Got an alta for Christmas and just started using it yesterday. With my zip even though the calorie burn was high, it was *reasonably* high. I would get about 500 calories burned for 10k steps (and I would assume it was more likely half that) Just started syncing my new Alta yesterday and for 8k steps it's telling me I…

How to log classes at gym
I've been taking a class at my gym - it's different every time. It's always a mix of cardio moves and strength moves, and you do 4-5 sets of a few different movements and then they give you a different set. For example, today for our first set we did a 300m row, then alternating medicine ball slams and burpees, jumping…

Strong Lifts but no small plates at my gym
I've started SL 5x5 and love the gym I joined, but I realized too late that there are no small plates for the barbells. They have regular bars (45lbs) and smaller bars (35lbs). They have plates that are 10, 15, 25 lbs and higher. There are dumbells and kettle bells too. So here's my problem - I can't increase by 2 pounds…

Rings off for barbell work?
I'm going in for a session with a trainer today so I can learn to use the barbell/squat cage to start SL 5x5. I've read that it's not good to wear rings (wedding ring/engagement ring) while you lift - is that for someone starting out or is that only a thing if you're lifting heavy?

Flex vs Alta
Planning on upgrading from a zip to one of the bracelets. Anyone use both and have a preference? Not sure if the Alta is worth the increased price....

SL 5x5 what equipment is needed
I'm joining a gym in September and have been reading up on Stronglifts 5x5. I just want to clarify what I need for this program so I make sure the YMCA I'm probably going to join has the correct equipment. I know it's preferable to have a squat rack for the squats, but what else do you need the squat rack for? I'm thinking…

Understanding losing, cutting, bulking, and muscles
Just trying to get a handle on all the info I'm getting from these forums. 44 y/o female SW 205 (06/05/17) CW 185 GW south of 170 So right now I'm sedentary set to lose 1 pound a week I'll be able to join a gym next month and plan on starting Strong Lifts. So right now I'll be cutting calories while lifting to preserve…

1lb/week or 2lb/week?
44 y/o female SW 205 - 06/05/17 CW 189 GW south of 170 I had my loss set to 2lb/week but I think that may be too high. I checked my TDEE and it's 1870, so when MFP has me at 1200 calories to start without exercise, that's still not low enough to technically lose 2lbs a week without factoring in exercise, correct? Should I…

Weight loss and building muscle -
5'8" 44 year old female SW 205 CW 191 GW south of 170 I'd like to lose the weight - at least another 20-25 pounds - and I'd like to be strong and have muscle definition. I keep reading posts about losing weight vs building muscle - how you need a calorie deficit to lose but a surplus to gain - so what's the right chain of…

Fitbit and exercise
I wear a zip and most of my exercise lately is walking. This morning I spent a half hour digging a hole in the yard. Normally I just let my fitbit log my steps and don't count extra calories unless I'm doing an actual workout but I'm not sure if I should log this? If I log the half hour, will fitbit just deduct the steps I…

Eating in the evening if you still have calories to spare
I didn't make a ton of great food choices today, but I did exercise, so I'm still 300+ calories under for the day - but it's 9:30 at night and I'm going to bed in an hour. I'm considering having a protein bar just to get some more calories/protein in for the day, but is that stupid? I have over 20 pounds to lose, so being…

Proper pushup form
Elbows in or elbows out to the side? I've seen both and not sure which is right.
