I just started growing/making kefir
Grow? Make? I guess you make the kefir milk and grow the kefir grains.... Anyway, my flatmate gave me a few kefir grains and I just had my first drink today. For those who haven't heard of kefir, it is like this cauliflower looking clump of bacteria and yeast which you put in milk and leave at room temperature for a day or…

How much weight can you actually lose in one day?
I know, I know, "Don't weigh yourself daily" I know that water weight and the content of your stomach can make a difference. How much can you actually lose in one day? Is it possible to lose 1 or 2 pounds, or is such a quick change going to be water weight or a change in the contents of your stomach/intestine. Last week I…

How to spot bad science
I tried to just add an infographic, but it came out ridiculously huge, so here is a link to the site: http://blog.publons.com/post/82620339182/we-love-this-graphic-which-has-been-doing-the A link to the infographic; http://24.media.tumblr.com/d22e23dc7acd215508237492b7b6f884/tumblr_n3uiv8yowl1s875zyo1_1280.png

NSV- time for a new belt.
So, for much of last year I had to wear a belt with all my pants, but eventually it got to the point where it was just ridiculous, so at the end of last year I bought a new pair of jeans, and new work pants followed a few months ago. So, with my new pants I did not need my belt. Today, I put my jeans on and was like "I…

How long can water weight etc. mask weight loss
I am plateuing at the moment. My weight has been bouncing up and down in a approx. 2 pound range for the last 4 weeks. I know I haven't been eating the best everyday for the past 4 weeks, but I did the maths, and I should have lost 2 pounds this month. I know weight loss isn't linear, but this bouncing up and down and all…

Classes for strength training.
How many people go to strength training classes? I went to one yesterday to try it out, and overall I enjoyed it, though very sore today, even though I was using quiet low weights on my barbell (especially compared to everyone else). Just wanting to get a gauge on what others thought about it. Pros: I am more motivated in…

Compiled all the research on macronutrients.
Fat is bad for you, carbohydrate is bad for you, protein is bad for you. Don't forget that oxygen is bad for you and causes aging, which leads to death. Just stop eating and breathing and you will be fine.

Question about fibre.
According to my reports from MFP I rarely get to the recommended 25 grams of fibre a day. However, I am not sure if all the food entries include their fibre amount. I do have a bowel movement at least once everyday. Is that sufficient evidence that I am getting enough fibre in my diet?

Who has calculated their TDEE using their MFP data
and how does it compare with the online estimates. I just did some calculations yesterday using the last 5 weeks of data from MFP, and I calculated that my TDEE is around 2,330 calories a day. My online estimates (from IIFYM.com, if I select exercising 6 times a week) are Muffin-St Joer: 2,115 Harris-Benedict: 2.250…

Help bearing the hunger.
Hello good people of MFP. I need some helpful advice about hunger. I usually eat around 1800 calories a day (at least on weekdays), and with my exercise routine this has resulted in slow weight loss. I have been very happy on this amount of calories and have a pretty regular meal plan for my weekdays. On Sunday I entered a…

A calorie is not a thing...

TDEE-ers, do you eat more on a day you have an event?
Hello. I use the TDEE-20% approach, which is great everyday as I can eat the same amount on a regular basis, and usually it is plenty to keep me happy and full. I have an event today, 6.5 km run/walk (plus all the walking before/after the actual event). I have already eaten 200 calories more than I usually do, and I still…

Feeling bloated after eating too much
Is it more likely to be what I ate, or just the fact I ate too much? I found that over the Xmas period when I let myself eat however much I wanted, and just recorded it, I often felt a bit uncomfortable and not like eating. A little bit bloated some days. I haven't felt like that since until today. Last night I went to a…

If you complete cut carbs out of your diet...
...how do you get enough fibre? I don't think there is anything wrong with limiting your carb intake to a certain amount, but when people go on these extremely low carb diets I wonder how they get enough fibre. AT least eat fruit and vegetables.

I want a backwards calculator
I want a calculator in which you can enter your current calorie intake and your activity level (as well as height, age, gender etc), and it tells you at what weight that would be maintenance. I just feel like my current calorie intake of 1850 a day is almost perfect, and I want to know if I just stay at between 1800-1900…

Different calories in beer.
How come 500 mls of cider has over 200 calories, but 500 mls of alcoholic ginger beer has only 120 calories? I actually thought the entries in MFP must be wrong, so I did some research, found the brand I had today, and the entries were correct. Started looking through the different beers on the website, and there is a lot…

Grab and eat breakfast ideas?
SO for the next 10 weeks, one day a week I have to get to work an hour earlier than normal (and I won't be able to eat once I get to work), this means I don't have time to make and eat what I usually have for breakfast. Any suggestions on things I can buy or prepare the night before, so all I need to do is grab it as I…

Getting past a mental barrier
Getting below 70kgs was a definite mental barrier for me. My starting weight was 77.2 kgs, and I did well until I got to about 71kgs, and then I ended up stopping counting and put on some more weight. Started again about 6 months later, this time about 74kgs, got to 71kgs and starting fluctuating between 72 and 70.5 kgs. I…

BMI and length of torso?
Can the length of your torso have any impact on how accurate BMI is as an indicator of your height? I ask, because I have short legs, but an average length torso, combining to a bit on the smaller size height of 160cms. When my sister was the same height as me, her legs were WAY longer. And other people the same height as…

Do I need to log calories applied externally?
:P I just bought virgin coconut oil today to apply to my eczema, and because it is a food product it has nutional values on it. Quite high in calories, though no surprise given it is an oil. It smells really really good. Hopefully it helps my eczema.

Switching to TDEE- what should my goal calories be?
My stats. Female, 25 years old, 160 cm (5'3"), 70kg (154 pounds), BF 35%ish ??? I want to lose at least another 5 kgs (10 pounds), but not more than 10 kgs (20 pounds). I have tried some calculators, my BMR seems to be somewhere in the range of 1400-1505 calories. My current goal is net 1500 calories, I include exercise…

I want cake
Ok, so I have 150 calories left for today. My flatmate had a birthday a few days ago and there is leftover cake in the fridge. If I weighed out, like, 50 grams of it, do you think it would fit? I really feel like cake. And yeah, I have no idea how many calories it is, it is raspberry flavoured and was made by my flatmate's…

Is that me in the mirror?
I have been doing well, keep under goal most days, been exercising a lot, especially since start of January, and the weight is slowing coming down. So, I got out of the shower and looked in the mirror, which is hard not to do, and I just got this weird feeling all over, like I was looking at something alien. I think I have…

Why do people complain the healthy food tastes bland?
It intrigues me. I think that since I have begun to be more conscious of what I eat I actually enjoy my food more. A meal can be low in calories AND delicious AND fulling. And when I do have a treat I make sure it is something I am really going to enjoy. Is it just some excuse that people use to not become more healthy? Is…

Calories burnt networking?
I attended a conference today, and it ended with about an hour of networking, i.e. walking slowly around a room talking to as many people as possible about anything and everything. And now I am exhausted. Surely I must have burnt at least a few calories doing that.

Foods for iron?
Hi, I grew up thinking that meat was the best food to eat for iron, but since using the MFP app I am surprised at just how little of our RDI of iron we get from one serving of meat. I am planning on incorporating more spinach into my diet next week. Are then any other foods I can add to my diet to increase my iron uptake?…

Has changing your diet and exercise impacted your sleep?
I am wondering if I am sleeping better, but since rehauling my diet and exercise a couple of weeks ago, I feel like I don't need as much sleep. I usually need to be in bed for 9 hours a night, 8 being a minimum, but this last week I have been going to bed an hour later then I usually do and waking up at the same time. And…

Looking for new friends
Hey everyone, I recently came back to MFP after a bit of an absense and putting back on 2 of the 5 kgs I lost the first time round. Anyway, on coming back I have discovered only 1 of my original friends is still active. I added a couple of new people yesterday, but would love some more. I am currently on 1,500 calories a…
