Something odd about total calories
If you take a look at my totals for today, the Total calories don't actually add up properly if you multiply the protein and carbs grams x 4 and the fat grams by 9. The report says I fall short by 246 calories, but doing the math above, I fall short by only 26. Where are the other 220? What am I missing?

Sour cream and onion dip
I loves me some sour cream and onion dip. I'm not ashamed to admit I can eat it by the spoonful. A cup of sour cream has 7 g of protein but 10 g of carbs. This is not too far off from 8 oz. of milk. How horrible is this?

Back to keto
I've done keto a few times over the years but I guess I was never serious about it, though I thought I was. I am insulin resistant (metabolic syndrome) and probably non-celiac gluten intolerant. I lost 30 lbs on Weight Watchers 3 years ago, but I couldn't stick to that... not enough to eat. I lost a lot of muscle doing…

Macros?
Actually two questions: * Does anyone track macros in Paleo? * Do you eat root vegs like 'taters, turnips, parsnips? That's all. :)

Do you eat back your fiber grams?
I don't know if MFP calculates net carbs. If I go over my carbs goal by 20 grams, but I rack up 25 grams of fiber, does that mean I can eat back 25 g of carbs? Or it doesn't matter at all, just use the carbs number and forget the fiber?

Calculating TDEE and activity level
All the TDEE calculators activity level descriptions are pretty much the same. For example Fat 2 Fit: Sedentary (little or no exercise, desk job) Lightly Active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/wk) Moderately Active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/wk) I sit at a desk all day but I am in the gym 3-4 days a week, full body…

Ironic motivation
I've had a battle with myself over weight, eating right, working out, etc. for years. On another site I post at, my history is pretty much an open book. My fault. There is someone who has taken several opportunities to rip me apart. This was today's installment. I think his comments say more about him than they do about…

New name, same person
I used to be Jainarayan, but that name no longer suits me. Thorbjornn is Old Norse for 'Thunder Bear'. Thor (the real one, not Marvel, though he's not bad either :p ) is my hero, and I am a bear. Fitting name, I think. I've been down this road more times than I care to count, to the point of embarrassment, frustration and…

Getting started, how does this look?
I want to get a handle on what I'm eating, tracking maybe just for this week. I am pretty sure the cheese, yogurt, milk other dairy should probably get kicked to the curb. I'm leaning towards a keto kick-start. Just wondering what everybody thinks. Morning: Bacon 6 slices. Half and half, 1/4 cup (over the day for coffee).…

Struggling with staying the same v. changing
This is probably completely weird. If subject is inappropriate, I'm completely cool with it being nuked... I love fat guys. Think of the late Billy Mayes, Richard Karn, virtually any bearish guy with a bear belly; I've even seen guys who are, for lack of a better term, blubbery (OK, obese) who make me say "woof!" There is…

A reboot and wiping the slate clean to start over
I've been on and off the site for a while. This is a completely wipe-the-slate-clean and reboot start over. Suffice to say I haven't met my goals, mostly because I don't know how much of what to eat. I undereat or I overeat. I used the IIFYM calculator to come up with numbers, using my stats of 5'5", 200 lbs, 30% body fat,…

Hungry in the evening
Here's the basics... Currently 200 lbs, ~23% body fat. Goal 175 lbs, 15% (weight and b.f. % roughly). Maintenance calories 2300-2400; weight loss 1800-1900 +/- according to Katch-McArdle Formula. So my calories are set to 1800, macros 40/35/25 protein/carbs/fat. The problem is that I'm getting most of my calories early in…

Returning to keto/paleo: veg. not working
I think I have to return to flat-out text book classic keto or paleo at the minimum. Vegetarian keto, even lacto-ovo-pesco just ain't a-gonna cut it. I tried lacto-ovo-pesco keto, I tried lacto-ovo-pesco 40/35/25 p/c/f. Lacto-ovo-pesco doesn't give enough fat and gives too much carbs. With lacto-ovo-pesco 40/35/25 I can't…

Radical change in direction
In Dec. 2010 I had 3 lumbar micro-discectomies. I've always been inflexible, with tight hamstrings, glutes (no jokes about being a tightass, I get that enough  ) and hips. Knees don't go anywhere near the floor. It probably comes from years of weight lifting and not stretching. I can't sit on the floor…

Can't, won't, don't want to eat... not hungry
Maybe it's my food choices and how they're prepared. I've recently (week and a half ago) gone lacto-ovo vegetarian again (religious reasons). I've tried it in the past and failed for lack of planning. But quite honestly I hate vegetables and vegetarian food unless it's prepared by someone who really knows what they're…

Higher protein vegetarian sources
I've recently decided to give lacto-ovo a shot again, mainly for religious and personal ethics reasons. I may include seafood occasionally. Eventually I hope to eliminate that. However, I don't see myself eliminating eggs, and I'm not so sure about the occasional seafood. For now I've eliminated mammals and birds. Insects…

Anyone ever have trouble eating everything?
When I was on WW I was ravenously hungry. Sure, 34 DPs (a WW point is 40 calories) for a 192 lb guy w/26% body fat (goal is 14% ), 1740 calories if I include the WPs and APs, when regular calorie calcs. say ~ 2100 for the weight I want to lose. No wonder I was hungry then. <--- That's the guy. Anyway, now my macros…

Going to switch to a full body workout
I've always done a 3 day split of legs, push, pull, or 4 days, separating shoulders from chest. But my schedule is interfering with it, in that I may miss a body part, and go too long before working it again. I found an extremely simple routine from Chad Waterbury. http://chadwaterbury.com/full-body-training-part-1/ I'm…

Weeding out clothes, and the overweight American male
I removed 3/4 of my shirts, buttondown and polo, from my closet and drawers because they are too big. I've gone from XXL to XL and from 17 1/2 to 17 neck. In the XXL I look like I have about 3 hours to live. My tailor says she can alter my collared shirts by taking in the sides and arms for $28 each, but it's not worth it…

How rigid are you/should you be with macros?
My goals are 50% fat, 35% protein, 15% carbs. No wheat or grains of any kind, but occasional potatoes. MFP give me a much higher sugar allotment than I actually get. Today, 12g out of an allotted 31g. And the sugar I do get is mostly from dairy. Edit: oops, I do usually hit my sugar allotment... I forgot about the small…

Well, here comes me...
Dorothy: "Where do I start?" Glinda: "Well, it's always best to start at the beginning." About 13.467 billion years ago, a cloud of interstellar gas and dust... oh, ok not that far back in the beginning. (I have a singular sense of humor that often gets me into trouble). I'm Jainarayan, an Italian-American guy,…
