Little Rock Arkansas support group
anyone else out there from Little Rock? My wife and I are active on the site for a few weeks now, and I was thinking that we could join others from the areas to create a support group. I thought this would help everyone stay motivated. Thanks Mike

tips for successful restaurant dining
Hi Gang.. some people from my blog and from the gym I go to are doing a group trip tomorrow night to Buffalo Grill on Rebsamen at 6:30ish. I will be teaching how to successfully order from a restaurant. My job often has me traveling, and I have still been able to lose weight while in hotels and eating at restaurants not…

Paleo/primal/caveman diets.. a scientists perspective
Great video of a scientists perspective of the Paleo/primal/caveman diets. (from the TED talks series) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMOjVYgYaG8 NOTE: I personally dont follow these diets, as I have found a style of eating that works well for me and do not feel a need to change. If you have success with this diet, that is…

Body Fat test tomorrow
well.. Tomorrow marks 2 years exactly since that first day i walked into my gym.. I decided to mark the occasion with a body fat test. I try to get a DEXA scan every 6-9 months, as it is a great way to gauge your progress and know for sure where you are instead of guessing. I guess im a bit nervous, as im not at my goal…

Foods you should NEVER eat
The current list (waiting for confirmation by a peer reviewed journal) 1) low fat mayo 2) Yak Testicles (baked or deep fried) 3) road kill 4) hot pockets (I think they actually include items 2 and 3 from above). 5) Ron Jeremy brand Cream of Chicken soup. looks like other entries might be coming in from our Southeast Asian…

best alcohol during the day
I enjoy a little gin (love bombay sapphire) with my mid-day beverage. I feel its a good pick me up and from what i read it really isnt bad at all as far as the calories. a co-worker recently said that i should try vodka, as their is less of a detectable smell from vodka but is still a nice mid-day kick. Im trying to find…

I feel i should be able to have a treat with dinner
I have a few people that go to my gym and are working out hard, but their diets are a train wreck and they complain about their lack of progress. I find it interesting they they each use the word "treat" in talking about their diet.. "i work hard in here and I just like to treat myself to a X". I guess they don't realize…

why do guys wear those workout gloves?
is it a fashion thing? I guess I am not up on fashion, but I just don't get the point of a guy "accessorizing" before his work out. I can understand if a female did not want to get calluses, but i think even that thought is somewhat dated. as a matter of fact, I don't think any of the girls in my gym wear those gloves and…

is Society too sensitive/politically correct?
Are we overly politically correct? Have you ever found yourself searching for the proper PC term for various conditions/situations/states of being.. trying to remember what was "OK" to say or term to use this week. Have you ever seen someone being rude/gross, but others afraid to address the issue (I assume because nobody…

european shopping and diet.
one of our kids has noted that my wife and I shop like we are Europeans. He observed that we do not keep a well stocked refrigerator and pantry, but instead make almost daily visits to the market. We do this because we consume mostly fresh veggies along with a lean protein source. It makes no sense to me that I would buy…

health, fitness and parenting.
a short list of things you can provide for your child. -a diverse, healthy diet -demonstrating that being active, is FUN (and not something to dread) -self respect -respect for others -an understanding of the rules of a polite society. if you provide all of these to your child, its called good parenting. If you don't…

restaurants or food items that give false sense of health?
I travel frequently for business, in fact i was on the road about 80% of the weekdays for the past year. during that time, i continued to lower my body fat percentage, and put on muscle. I also ate out 3 meals a day, and became pretty good and ordering something healthy in most restaurants (though I did have to walk out of…

my wife and diet.
MAN.. the things a spouse can do to you.. bringing home things they do not even like, but they KNOW are your favorites. keeping unhealthy foods in the pantry, telling you that its ok if you cheat instead of encouraging you to eat healthy at restaurants.using guilt to encourage you to skip workouts. Its just CRAZY. Luckily,…

fat to fit NSV - and a thank you.
I have two related "fat to fit" NSV's. a) I made a quick run to Best Buy yesterday.. while there, I bumped into the guy that does server support for the company my wife works for. we chatted for a bit on various gizmo's and i headed home. The NSV was when i heard about it from my wife. I guess he told my wife he saw me,…

is this time different?
Just curious how many of you had a moment where you felt a "NEED" to get healthier. Did you have a memorable moment where you knew change was a must, or was it a more routine decision. I can share first (I aint skeered.. as some say in the south.. - translation " I am not afraid"). I was having heart palpation's and was…

annual phyical..
i used to dread them. hated the lectures. lol. I looked forward to this one, except for the hind end related stuff. My Doc said that all my vital stats are "perfect" and then he gave me a treadmill stress test.. I crushed it, he said I got straight A's and he was impressed. then is said "this is usually the time in the…

question about "pullups" (kipping) at Crossfit.
I was always taught that pullups worked primarily back, but lately i have gone to Crossfit gyms while on the road. I was hoping one of the experts on here could tell me what muscles are targeted by the kipping "pullup" at crossfit. it looks mostly like calves, elbow and neck, but not sure.

great article about the impact of areobic exercise

My lovely wife was recently told that she should not run anymore, due to a knee and low back issue. we purchased a bike for her last weekend and are ready to start riding. I was curious if anyone in the group was into biking, and could give us tips or even maybe meet us one weekend for a group ride. thanks Mike

I am currently out of town on business, and needed to pick up a couple of dress shirts (as i forgot to hit the dry cleaners sunday.. oops) In the Dillard's (a proud little rock company), here in Louisville searching around.
