why do guys wear those workout gloves?

is it a fashion thing? I guess I am not up on fashion, but I just don't get the point of a guy "accessorizing" before his work out.
I can understand if a female did not want to get calluses, but i think even that thought is somewhat dated. as a matter of fact, I don't think any of the girls in my gym wear those gloves and are rather proud of calluses from lifting.
On a guy, I really just don't understand it. I am not trying to insult anyone, i honestly do not understand. yes, I have calluses from lifting but who cares. I'm a guy and not a hand model. I also leave the gym covered in sweat and with chalk on my shorts, but I feel that to be expected (assuming Oly lifting, not machines of course)
Ladies, are you bothered if a guy has calluses on his hands?

I like gloves...:bigsmile:0

Helps with getting a better grip0

They match my purse0

I wear them to avoid my hands ripping when I lift really heavy weights or do weighted pullups. I'd rather not have disgusting hands.0
-
Probably cause they don't want calluses. I don't wear gloves and haven't even been using chalk, but if someone else wants to, why the ef would I care.0

I was all about the no gloves-calluses thing for a long time. Until last winter when I was doing dead-lifts and some blisters developed on the first set. I went ahead and did the second set and not only did the blisters pop, but the bar damn near tore the top layers of skin off my hands....I wear gloves now and don't give a **** what anyone thinks about it. And I still have calluses.0

I wear them (I'm obv a girl) to keep my hands from getting destroyed by the bar when lifting heavy weights. It's definitely not a fashion thing
ETA - While I don't like a man with soft hands, I also appreciate a man who's hands aren't super rough or ripped.0 -

I still have "disgusting hands" (formally known as man hands) even though I wear gloves, and I mostly do it on dead lifts and because my weights are in my garage, which being outside gets my bar super cold. Try lifting weights with a Popsicle.0 -
I wouldn't want my guy to touch me with calloused hands. My skin is very sensitive, I literally got scratched by my ex-bfs hands from his callouses. He got a brand new pair of gloves the next day.0

Callouses aren't bad without gloves if you grip properly.0

Better grip, hands not messed up or sore.0

Not in the least - shows me that a guy with calluses on his hands works hard. HOT. And for the record, I'm also proud of the calluses on my hands from lifting. :drinker:0 -

i probably need to start wearing gloves..my hands are getting wrecked...0
-
I wear them, too. I don't like calluses.
And, no, I am not bothered by calluses on a man's hands, but maybe he doesn't want them?0 -
1. Not everyone adores calluses. I find them absolutely repulsive personally.
2. Some people manage a better grip with gloves.
Seriously OP, way to generalize the planet there. Surely since you don't care about your hands, NO ONE ON THE PLANET should... yeah, must be real special living in your world.0 -
Because those damn bars hurt your hands otherwise?0

I've made it almost all the way through NROLFW without gloves, but I'm buying some this week. I do have some callouses, which don't bother me too much, but my deadlift weight is being limited by my grip when I try to increase. The bar is chewing up my hands and it is painful to finish my reps at the weight I'm at. I could probably add more weight if I had some gloves.
As I have increased my weights, I have come to understand why lifters need to wear gloves.
Buying gloves is actually on my to-do list before my next workout.0 -
I mostly see women wearing them, actually.0

This... Don't want disgustingly rough/ripped hands on me...And it's a lot nicer to not touch weights with my bare hands that other guys had in their sweaty and sometimes blistery hands...At least I can throw the gloves in the wash....0 -

gloves will make it harder to grip the deadlift bar. What you want is straps.
also make sure you are't holding the bar in the palm of your hand.0 -
Helps with not getting blisters.
Blisters can put your training back, i.e. you have to leave it time before you can really lift again comfortably.
I use gloves for cycling for this reason, so that my hands grip and I dont come away with sore hands.0 -
I'm actually looking into buying gloves because my boyfriend recently gave me a special ring  and it pinches when I grip equipment.
But I don't mind callus0 -
I wear them cause my palms get sweaty when Im nervous about picking up almost 200 pounds and the bar slips out of my grip. I can focus more on what my entire body is doing as a machine instead of oh no oh no oh no oh no gonna drop it gahhhhhhhhhhhhh crap im half on the floor again and I have a barbell bruise across the top of my right thigh. Lovely.
also yeah callouses on girls.. not good under the covers.0 -
I'm a chick and I love my callouses. Gloves are for wimps!0

take your ring off to lift. its potentially dangers, and will likely damage the ring as well.0 -
mine have sequins . . . okay seriously I wear them on clean and jerks and heavy deads. Don't hate0

1. Callouses.... just because they are male doesn't mean they MUST have disgusting man hands.
2. Sweat!! I was doing some intense resistance training at the weekend and the grip was literally sliding out of my hand mid set and someone had to come and help me re-place it, otherwise i could have been in for an injury.0
