The beach!!!!!!
I was just informed we are taking a family vacation to the beach in two months. I am not anywhere close to beach shape. What's the best way to drop about 15 pfunds of purely fat in that time? I'm also training for a mountain ultra that is three weeks after the beach trip. So I don't want to sacrifice running performance.

How to cope with San Jacinto Day
San Jacinto Day is April 21. I'm usually pretty good about sticking to my diet/lifestyle but when these major holidays come up it can get really tough. I mean, big family gatherings. Lots of traditional holiday food and drinks. How are you supposed to NOT go totally off the rails?

UGH! Red Robin
We went to Red Robin the other day and I had no idea that they would keep bringing you French fries. What is this about? It seems pretty irresponsible to provide so many carbs to someone. I asked if I could sub sweet potato fries so I wouldn't have as many carbs but they said they didn't have sweet potato fries and just…

Lifting and running
This topic seems to come up from time to time in here. I just found this today and thought it was interesting: http://www.runnersworld.com/workouts/two-new-approaches-to-strength-training-for-runners

Post Halloween Horror
I think I made up for all the weight I haven't been losing anyway last night. Chocolate, freezer pizza, chocolate, beer, chocolate, cake, chocolate, bourbon, and chocolate. This morning I woke up with horrible heartburn. Two questions: First: is it the toxins in the candy that are causing my heartburn? And if so how do I…

Basketball
Just one basketball injury can sh1tcan all your other goals forever! In February I sprained my ankle playing basketball. After several months of physical therapy I still have yet to be able to return to Crossfit!!!!

Tapout
I've been wondering this for a long time. Am I misunderstanding the meaning of the term or are there a whole bunch of people wandering around wearing clothes that say "Screw it, you win, I quit"? Doesn't seem very inspirational.

The Usual
Trog's thread asking for our top 10s got me to thinking about the beers that you just always have on hand. The good solid beers that may or may not be stellar but that are consistently good and have become a standard feature in your fridge (some of them of course may also appear in your top 10). The following are fixtures…

Doesn't belong here but.......
Is there a way to share/copy stuff from one person's diary to another? If my wife and I eat the same stuff for dinner is there a way she can just copy my stuff or do we have to still enter it all individually into both of our diaries? If not, that would be a cool thing to be able to do.

Is this possible or am I messed up?
This year I started weighing and measuring myself once a month. Last month I was 210 lbs and (taking the average of 3 different calculators) about 19.5% BF. In the past month I have moved my calorie target up to maintenance (which I have usually met, been under a few days and over a few days (and WAYY over a couple of…

Barbells?
What's the difference in all these different barbells? Elite FTS has a bench bar, a squat bar, a deadlift bar. What's the difference in these bars? Also, what am I getting for $350 that I don't get for $180 when I buy a bar? What does $600 get me that I don't get at $350? Right now I have a bar I bought used and for what…

Recovery Drink
Now that this group is here I can post this without getting all the "that's not a good idea" or "why would you want to do that" or "beer is evil" responses. I am running a half marathon on Feb 17 and need to decide on a good recovery drink. Criteria are as follows: 1. It has to be something I already have or that I can get…

Ideas re:lifting, running, tapering, 5/3/1ing etc
Alright. Here's my deal right now. Currently I'm following a 5/3/1 schedule for lifting. Due to poor planning this week we're experiencing right here and now is the scheduled deload week (making next week the "5" week). I have a half-marathon next Sunday (the 17th, not the premier of Walking Dead Day) which means if I…

Accessories, rep ranges, deficits and whatnot
Right now I'm doing (more or less) 5/3/1 for my weight schedule - I'm probably not the target demographic at whom this program is aimed but it's the schedule that fit best and allowed me to incorporate lifting and running and still have decent leg recovery. I read Wendler saying that he recommends "bodybuilding" the…

Freakin Deadlifts
Are awesome! Even though I'm still at a light weight (175) I feel like an animal when I get done. I started Stronglifts about six weeks ago after having not lifted in almost 20 years. I had never done Deadlifts before because I was scared of hurting my back. I never knew what I was missing. That is all.

Healthy Fats
I've been seeing a lot of information that the fats contained in olive oil, avocados and nuts are healthy fats as opposed to hydrogenated oils and the fats contained in meat and palm oil. Would it not make sense to only track the "unhealthy" fats and subtract the healthy fats? I would hate to not be getting enough healthy…

HRM's birthday
Saturday was my Garmin FR60's first birthday. In the past year it has performed 434 activities, 593.65 miles, 284:14:23 hours, 204,542 calories, 881,174 steps, average speed has been 6.1mph with a max of 14.1mph. My average heart rate while using it has been 129bpm with a max of 197bpm (which is a lot higher than 220 minus…

Some Mornings? What's Up with that?
I go meet up with my running partner for our regular Sunday long run with a snot locker full of phlegm and serious DOMS in my legs from Wednesday's squats and deads. I ate nothing but crap and beer yesterday and didn't go to bed until midnight last night. I get to my buddy's house and he bails because he ate crap yesterday…

Half marathon and lifting
Next week I start training for my first half-marathon. I've been doing Stronglifts 5x5 for the past couple of months as well as running three days per week - and have definitely not been getting 100% out of both but I didn't want to give up either. I'm planning to cut my lifting down to two days per week so I can put more…

Cutting back for Half training
In about a month I'm going to start training for a half marathon and am planning to cut my Stronglifts workouts down to twice a week at that point. I'm planning to do "A" on Mondays and "B" on Fridays. My main question is should I keep adding weight in the 5lb per workout increments (10lb for deads) or should I do…

Changing my stuff. How active?
I've always had my MFP settings set at "sedentary" and eaten back exercise calories. I'm changing some things up and I think I'm going to change my MFP settings to a higher activity level and not eat back exercise calories (or some *kitten* like that). I'm trying to decide what activity level to use. This week is just…

Purple Dumbbells
I was doing my chicken**** dumbbell routine this morning and had gotten about halfway through my first (of three) sets when my 6 year old daughter came in and sat on the couch. She asked if I was doing that so I would get skinny and I said "No, I'm not trying to get skinny, I'm trying to get healthy (I'm trying to maintain…

My first 5K
I ran my first 5K this morning. I finished in 27:47. What shocked me was that I finished 12th out of 36 in my division and 123/378 in my gender. I was 190 out of 1033 total. Three months ago I couldn't run across the street and I just finished a race faster than 2/3 of the males and 80% of the total group. I'm totally…

Timing for fueling workouts
I've been trying to find information on the best time to eat and what to eat to give me energy for my workouts. What I currently do is this: 4:15 AM - Wake up, drink some BCAAs and do Insanity - have a whey protein shake after Insanity (I can't eat real food this early in the morning or I feel messed up) 8:00 AM - Eat a…

Fueling Workouts?
I wasn't sure if I should put this here or in the Fitness/Exercise section. I've made my choice and I'll live by it. What I currently do is this: 4:15 AM - Wake up, drink some BCAAs and do Insanity - have a whey…

Modify or start over later?
I'm two weeks into Insanity (the workout program - the other one I've had my whole life) and this morning while jogging I fell and hurt my arm. It hurts like a mofo - bad enough that I went to the doctor. It's not broken but will be a couple of weeks before it's healed. Do I continue doing Insanity and just skip the parts…

Kids hmmpf
Yesterday morning I was doing the P90X legs and back tape. My 6 year old daughter came out and was watching me. When I started doing wall squats she looked at me and said "that doesn't look hard". I said "come do it". She came over and leaned up against the wall and said "this is easy." I said "you're not doing it right"…

Cholesterol
I went to the doctor a couple weeks ago for what I've been calling my annual "you're too fat" visit. He said to keep up the good work. They called with my lab results yesterday. I was hoping my cholesterol would be around 200. It hasn't been under 200 in the past ten years or so and has been as high as 270ish. 159 total,…
