TEAM FIVE

@rusgolden, I'm still trying to figure out this AR Challenge & the spreadsheet; but FYI, I sent a note to MissionEnforcer. Two of us logged minutes this morning but the total count toward this leg of the race seemed off. Is there a different formula for the race leg total versus our individual minute totals?
I added in my 10 minutes for watching the two videos already.
I'm crushed that I didn't finish that first leg in the top 10%! Especially since I went into the weekend quite comfortably. I couldn't push out more this weekend, I felt so run down. It hurt to be so close to 1,000 minutes and not getting there! I'm going to try to do better this week!
Happy Monday everyone!
P.S. I never thought about visiting Romania, but it's so beautiful, I might have to add it to my bucket list!
Oh yeah, 1975 I was five, so I had been in the states a couple years & I guess I was about to start kindergarten. We lived in a small, rural town in Florida & I had two beautiful German Shepherds, Beauty & Majestic.

THE WEEK TWO SPREADSHEET IS UP.
Week One was very close & it is obvious every team is in it to win it.
THE RESULTS FOR WEEK ONE ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1st Place: Team One - 1260 points
2nd Place: Team Five - 1235 points
3rd Place: Team Six - 1180 points
4th & 5th Place: A Tie! Team Two & Team Three - 1170 points
6th Place: Team Four - 1130 points
Individual team results may be viewed under the "Past Weeks" Tab.
Good luck during Week Two!1 -
I just ran around the complex counting stairs (they were double or more my guestimate!!!) I have a sheet on my desk where I mark each time I go up which flight. I am at 225 steps so far... My office is 15 steps above the rest of the Snake Park so I do that one lots (10 times today!)
I wasn't in 1975, my older brother was in the process towards the end of the year but was only born in July 1976!3 -
Team 5 - we lost by 25 points! Let's all aim for full points if possible. Any treats can be consumed for breakfast to avoid the dreaded late night snacking task!!!!4

I usually don't snack at night anyway, so I'm hoping this will be an easy week. Last year it would've been super hard for me though since I was on second shift and not eating dinner until I got off work at 11pm.3 -
Monday Progress:
Watch videos for 10 bonus exercise minutes: So, I'm at work but thought this would be simple to go ahead and knock out. I figured I could just do some squat exercises for a few minutes, no big deal... 3 minutes in and my thighs are burning, like, are they sure this video is only 4 minutes?? lol But I got through them both (and currently have my desk fan blowing at me full blast).
Challenge 1 for 10 points: 5 videos x 2
These look really fun. I'll try to do these tonight. Especially excited about the Thriller video.
Challenge 2 for 10 points: 770 stairs up
Edit: They said "yes" to doing step ups with a step stool, so I'll try and get these done tonight or tomorrow also. (I'd rather get all of the challenges out of the way early...)
Challenge 3 for 5 points: No late night snacking for 5 days
This shouldn't be a problem. I eat dinner at 7 and don't usually snack afterwards. I do all my snacking before dinner... which I am working on limiting also.2 -
Hey all, a team 1 member stopping in to say well done last week! You guys pushed us hard so thanks!7

Yes, congratulations on coming first! It was a very close race and it's really fun to try and keep up with each other. Looking forward to the many weeks ahead!4 -
Great job Fab Fives!
Team 1 won the gold last go around, so they are going to be stiff competition! So, lets keep the pressure on and use the 2nd place finish to motivate us even more!
We had 4 players with over the 1000 max, so we really need to get more participation from the rest of us (me included)... and with it being a short leg this week, the additional minutes will add up to more points quickly. I am back to work, which means, back to the gym (in my office building), which should mean some more minutes from me this week.
I've already knocked out the videos this morning and they were easy... should add up to about 37-38 minutes again. I also did some strength workout in between repeating them. I've got LOTS of stairs at work, so going to try and knock that out today or tomorrow as well.
Even though we got bowlerea to respond last night, she has chosen to step out of the challenge. So, Mission Enforcer has replaced her with @biketheworld --- the spreadsheet hasn't changed yet, but I am going to send her a friend request and let her know that she is now part of the Fab Fives!!
Let's rock it this week!!

Very sorry jess. I must of posted before you posted on the spread sheet . well done on the loss I will wait until everyone has posted next sunday1 -
Welcome @biketheworld!
Take care @bowlerae, wishing you all the best!
@rusgolden, did you answer the question about the spreadsheet?1 -
Hi everyone - I'm so excited to join your team. Just read through this week's destination/challenges and I'm so impressed and pumped! I'm a 58 year old mother of 3, grandmother of 5. I started putting on weight when my kids were little and struggled for years. Then 2009 and 2010 my stress went through the roof, I ate too much, drank too much, and packed on a lot of weight - topping off around 235. a whopping 100 pounds more than my 20's weight. I'm 217 at the moment, but I've gone as low as 205 only to bounce right back up. I do run, but my issue is snacking - so that late-night-no-snack-challenge is just what I need. I will be running my 18th half marathon in just a few weeks, and I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2012. Crossing that finish line was unbelievable. While I like to run, I LOVE to bike - just don't do nearly enough of that. At any rate - that's enough for now. Looking forward to getting to know you all better.8

Wow, sounds like you should be named 'runtheworld' instead of 'biketheworld'. Welcome to the team!
Also wishing @bowlerae well!1 -
So to all you youngsters, in 1975, I graduated 5th grade and started 6th grade (so I was 10-11yo). I was living in Virginia Beach VA at the time. My idea of fun was climbing trees and reading books while in the tree or playing matchboxes with the boys or shooting hoops with one of my neighbors. I became a bit of a tomboy and played more with the boys because the girls in my neighborhood tried to get me to smoke cigarettes in 4th grade, and I thought it was stupid. Later found out that it was my older sister, who was their babysitter, that had them try to get me to smoke. *shakes head* She wanted to get me to do it, because she was smoking, and if I found out, she didn't want me tattling to mom. My sister's plans were foiled because I opted to be a loner or hanging with the boys than start to smoke. Ha Ha!
Being in 5th grade also means I was about 55lbs. I have a weird correlation where my weight was usually around 11lbs x the grade I graduated until I hit ~95 pounds in 9th grade and stayed there until college...which was funny, because I almost wasn't allowed in the Army because of my low weight due to the 100lbs minimum at the time (it's now 107lbs for my height). The guy signing me in for ROTC summer camp between my junior and senior year of college wrote down 100lbs on my paper even though I weighed in at 98lbs (and thank goodness he didn't force feed me bananas like in old recruiting movies since I hated bananas at the time). I ended up leaving camp at 109lbs...the only person in my platoon to gain weight (most of the guys lost about 25lbs and the girls lost about 5-10lbs). That was the last time I was under 100lbs, and when I eventually left the Army, I was around 120 lbs (which is my goal weight).
Will work on the challenges today. Going to hop on my gazelle and watch all the various videos that aren't dancing, and then do the dance videos too. If I don't knock them out today, I don't know when I'll get them done.
Wish I knew how many steps there are at my church office, since I had to climb them this morning. But we have some of those stair machines at the gym, and I will probably knock the step one out there on Wednesday, and just chalk up today's steps to my health like I do every week.
Not thrilled with challenge three this week since there is zero evidence that late night snacking is bad/isn't healthy for you. However, will comply even though I have quite a few nights that I don't even get dinner until 9pm (which also isn't uncommon in foreign countries and since we are in international group, I'm surprised at the US minded challenge). But, it's for 5 days, so I'll suck it up buttercup and do it for the team.
And I'm super sad there were no 'garlic' related challenges for this week, especially given the name of the race. I LOVE garlic...but I will be making a big vat of healthy chili for dinner (and the rest of the week) and it for sure has plenty of garlic in it.5 -

Welcome to the team! Excited to have you! 18 half marathons is super impressive! Good luck with the no snacking this week! You can do it!!3 -
@beachy That's a really interesting story! When I was smaller (and bolder) I also climbed trees and got pretty high up! I don't have the courage for heights anymore, although I did a charity abseil off of the Forth Road Bridge (Edinburgh) a couple of years ago. It has to be the scariest thing I've ever done, but the adrenaline and feeling of accomplishment afterwards is fantastic. If you haven't already I recommend giving it a go!
@biketheworld We're happy to have you on the team! What is it like running a half marathon? I was considering taking up the challenge as I've never done it before, but I haven't done any running. I'd like to train myself and do something next year though!
On a side note, I am absolutely chuffed with myself today. I managed to fit back in to my sports bra, which I haven't been able to wear since last year due to weight gain. I couldn't get the first row of clasps fastened and at the time I was really disappointed in myself. It's really nice when you can see that your efforts are paying off! Has anyone had an experience like that recently? What positive changes have you noticed?5 -

That is so funny because when I joined the Navy, I was only 2 pounds over the underweight limit (and we were threatened with a gallon of milk to move the scale! ) I was also the only one to gain weight in boot camp. Almost 15 pounds and I loved the way I looked back then. One day maybe I'll get back there...

I felt this way last week when they didn't allow water-based drinks because we need to "detox" (not something I agree with), but I guess they can't always expect to please everyone.

Welcome and thanks for checking in. I believe that @Meowler posted a list of our team (probably on page 2) if you want to start sending friend requests to everyone. I see that you have already befriended a couple on the team. You are replacing @bowlerae so you can skip her, but everyone else is current.
@b3achy -- your story made me chuckle. I was 8 in 1975, but it was in 5th grade that my friends had me try smoking. lol. My best friend at the time lived about 4 houses down and was the youngest of 5 brothers and the whole family smoked, so I was encouraged to as well when we hung out.
I didn't realize until the Rocky Horror remake that the original came out in 1975. I grew up in a small community in MN and never really knew about the movie until college in 1985, but we only had a 4 screen theater and I didn't have TV in the house from 1979-85 because we moved out to the country and there was no cable tv and my dad didn't want to put up a mile high antenna to pick up 3 stations... which was kind of a good thing because I started to get interested in reading. The only time I really missed it was for the 1980 winter olympics and had to go down to a friends house to watch the USA win the gold in hockey!
Hey team, guess what??? I just knocked out the stair challenge as well!! Did 20 floors before and after lunch... 1 floor = 2 flights of 10 stairs, so 40 * 20 = 800 stairs! BOOM!!5 -
I wasn't even an idea in 1975. My mom was only 10 years old.
I completed the stair challenge already. The benefits of working in a warehouse where you run up and down 15ft step ladders all day.4 -
I have some questions about challenge 3: no late night snacks.
The cutoff is 10pm, but I workout at 10pm, and then I usually have an after workout snack.
Now, I can skip my post workout snack for 5 days, so that's not too big of a deal.
But I usually have sleepy time tea right before bed which is around 12am-1am.
.... I just noticed I did not ask a single question in that whole spiel.2 -

Well, I would think the tea wouldn't be considered a snack, quite the opposite in my opinion.0 -

I recently bought a new one a size smaller in circumference.. doesn't make it easier in finding one since the cup size gets one step bigger with every circumference step getting smaller
The challenges:
- I started with the stair challenge this morning but will probably finish it either Wednesday or Friday - will take the stairs up to my apartment on 11th floor (not today - no time and I go to a fitness boot camp tonight so def. not before that )
- Videos I do usually on weekends - but if I finish the stair challenge tomorrow I might do them on Friday already
- Late night snacking challenge should be ok for me. I don't have much to eat at home since I usually eat out though Thursday might not be possible since I only get home from sports at around 9.45/10pm
Where have I been in 1975? Maybe still in Heaven, the cycle of reincarnation, on the other side of the Styx or a tiny little grain of dust in the universe - who knows. My parents were 18 and 17 at that time. So my sister (1978) and I (1987) were not even in planning
Welcome to Team Five aka Fab Fives @biketheworld4 -
@2016summerfun I had trouble with the spreadsheet this morning and never recorded my weight loss until after work. I lost 1.2 lbs this week. :-)3
-
I am so excited about the videos this week. I did the Calling All Monsters and the Monster Mash videos with my grade 3 class this morning. I'm going to have them do the Transylvania Twist and the Thriller video tomorrow...So much fun.
Welcome @biketheworld It's great having you on our team.3 -
Vintage Fivers Unite!! So many youngsters in this group...lol! Hopefully they can keep up with us
Had fun with the dance videos even though I really dislike Halloween itself - I prefer to celebrate life than death. But it's definitely been a long time since I did the Thriller dance (college probably), and the Time Warp (the last time I went to a dueling pianos bar since it is typically a 'bar participation' song, and yes, I always ask for it to be played). Shockingly, I enjoyed the Disney video the most...well, maybe after the Time Warp. Again, my cats were horrified at my dancing...I have officially verified why I was never a backup dancer for MJ. Relaxing now and watching DWTS.
Oh, and the chili I made was awesome, and I had lemon sorbet and blackberries for dessert! Total Yum night!
Week 2 Status:
Challenge 1 - Twisting/dancing - 35 minutes - Done on 24 October
Challenge 2 - Stairs (770 steps UP) - (planned for Wed at gym)
Challenge 3 - No late night snacking after 10pm (5 of 7 days)
-- Monday - Done! (last bit of food at 9pm when dinner was at about 8pm)
"Mileage":
24 October - 38 min Strength Training; 35 min Gazelle; 35 min Dance Videos; 4 Planks = 112 minutes
ETA:
@Meowler - I love rappelling - always hard to get off the ledge, but they made us do it in Army, and I loved the feeling of bounding down a wall. I even got to try a free fall rappel from a mock-up of a helicopter skid which was even scarier initially, but fun to do. Would love to do more again one of these days.
Totally relate to your NSV! I'm waiting until I lose my last bit before I go on a new bra buying spree...but I did recently fit into a small set of bathing suit bottoms that I purchased last year (thinking I was going to keep losing, but I gained instead over the winter). I have a really cute outfit to wear now for my paddling races since I had a separate sports bra that matches it nearly perfectly.
@MzManiak - sounds like we have some similar experiences too. Yea, I wasn't thrilled with the water challenge description, but I do think too many people don't drink enough water and don't realize how good it can be for you. But you're right, the challenges are just that, and not always for everyone. But also a few days of doing one probably isn't too bad, even if one doesn't 100% agree with their reasoning behind it.
@rusgolden - yea, silly things that happen to us as kids, huh?...good thing we've overcome our pasts and are rocking it for our future. Congrats on the great workout!5 -

I understood the "snacking" to be unhealthy, kind of mindless eating that people are apt to do in the evening. I am pretty sure they wouldn't count your tea as such. You may ask about the post workout... I wouldn't want you to feel depleted after a workout. They may be willing to define some parameters on what "snacking" entails.4 -
Monday Night Progress:
Watch videos for 10 bonus exercise minutes: completed this morning
Challenge 1 for 10 points: 5 videos x 2
Completed the first 2 videos. My youngest son (4 years old) thought the Thriller video was hilarious and was trying to kill a zombie (me) the whole time. Then I put him on my back and finished the video so I'd quit tripping over him. Lol
Challenge 2 for 10 points: 770 stairs up
Did 240 / 770 (530 left)
Challenge 3 for 5 points: No late night snacking for 5 days
Day 1 of 5 complete
Minutes:
130 (40 strength, 10 bonus, 22 cardio, 58 flex)
3 -
I started doing my stairs today. Everyone I had to go up, is go back down and do it a few times
In 1975, I was only 13 -
Stairs done! I may regret that shortly as I have knee rehab, but I wanted to tick it off the list!
Dancing done last night. Glad no one but my pets watch but I did actually have some fun.5 -
