Sidesteel: Muscle endurance plateau
Hello, I came here looking for advise from @SideSteel or someone else knowledgeable. Female, 42 Weight 57kg Size: 169cm I've been working out for well over a year now and started dieting with a very moderate deficite at the same time. Lost 18kg. At the moment I do bodyweight circuits 2-3 times per week and running 3 times,…

I do not have joint problems. But...
I visited my chiropractor for a routine adjustment. Then started... umm... bragging about my numbers. See, when i started visiting her years ago, i was out of shape, lazy, and sore... years later, of course, this has changed, so i keep her up to date on what i am doing. So i know my numbers are nothing special compared to…

Starvation Mode
At what point (on average, I realize it may differ depending on the individual) do calories expended through exercise exceed calories eaten and the body says "You nitwit; I'll start sacrificing muscle tissue to keep you alive!" 300 calorie deficit? 1000? 1500?

machine vs barbell vs arthritis dilemma
Hey there, I have significant arthritis in my joints, particularly my elbows and knees. I can squat more deeply, with more weight, and without distracting pain using a leg press machine. Ditto for the bench press. I keep seeing comments that machines are inferior, though, and that worries me somewhat. I do planks for ab…

Hunger
I try to eat a balance of fat, carbs and protein at every meal. What are suggestions of things to eat so to feel fuller so that I no longer feel hungry after meals (daily max is 1700 calories (without exercise) according to myfitnesspal. I drink water throughout the day, so I don't think it's thirst masquerading as hunger).

Intake question
Posting for thekyleo so we have a separate thread: 1) What's your current intake of calories, on average? This is TOTAL CALORIES EATEN so this would include anything you eat for exercise calories. In other words, how much are you eating? 2) What's your current average intake of protein, carbs, and fats, in grams? 3) Do you…

Losing fat without counting calories
I can't seem to stick to calorie counting. Could you suggest some ways to lose fat without having to count calories? I get really stressed with it when I do count which results in over eating. Thanks!

Anyone deadlift (sumo in particular) with squat briefs?
I have hip flexor problems (old injuries) that flare up if I sumo too much. I can do it once/week but twice/week starts to give me hip flexor pain during the movement. I've tried everything. So I broke out some squat briefs and gave them a try tonight. They were too tight and I will need to buy a slightly bigger pair but…

Where to from here?
This is a bit long winded (apologies) but I need some guidance. Back in Feb I started a new lifting program (having done NROL and attempted stronglifts but injury issues prevented progress). My PT designed it, the focus was essentially similar to stronglifts but with less squats and more upper body focus (as this was my…

Deadlift plateau
Ok so this will probably make me sound like a complete *kitten* noob, but here goes. Hit 360 (conventional, mixed grip) maybe two months ago. Went for 370 two weeks ago and didn't get it the first time (slipped out of my grip). Made another attempt a few days later and I did just barely get to lockout, but my legs were…

Proof that SS is the sh**
This is my progress on my 3 lifts since I started working with him. The pull out numbers in the end are my competition numbers. Those are actual lifts -- everything else on here is a 1RM predictor. My best bench 1RM prediction was around 143 lbs (I missed a 148 lbs lift at competition and left a handful of lbs on the floor…

Elbow "discomfort" When Bench Pressing
So, I thought I'd ask in here... I'm having a bit of Elbow pain when Bench pressing. Tends to happen over 100KG\220Lbs. The WORST thing, is it's the FIRST rep... As a competitive powerlifter, that's the worst time for this... I've hit this weight 3 weeks on the run now, as I'm not happy enough with it to progress it.…

Question About Weighing Food...
OKAY I TOTALLY HAD EVERYTHING TYPED OUT BEFORE MY BROWSER CRASHED AND NOW I'M MAD. Tyler and Taylor both weigh their food, except when the plate is too big to see the numbers. Tyler is a complete suborn anal-perfectionist and absolutely positively must reach the serving of 28g. Taylor on the other hand sees no harm, no…

My progress with SideSteel
Hi. I’m lizzardsm and I’m a recovering yo-yo dieter. I probably wouldn’t have ever admitted to that until SideSteel gently broke it to me. My problems: I’ve had a difficult time with maintaining consistency and with my training. My MO has been to lose weight in the fall or winter then around springtime, I fall off track…

Palatability experiment
Hey everyone, So this is going to be a rather goofy post that I might also post in my blog. I'm also going to paste the link to this to my online clients to see if I can have some of them attempt this and report their results. I'm a big fan of Stephan Guyenet. He's an obesity researcher who focuses on the neurobiology of…

47 yo female: expectations and frustrations
I think I am the "old lady of MFP! I started here 5 years ago and have missed very few days since. Currently, my logging streak is 1689 days! So I am certainly not a newbie! I have been fairly successful overall. Initially I lost over 40 lbs, but I have re-gained around 15. I am still in a healthy BMI range but would like…

When does a deficit effect LBM?
I have food sensitivities and allergy issues. So I tightened up and the last 4 days I have lost 8 lbs. I have lost 20 lbs in 117 days for a total of 79 over 4 years. I have MFP set for a deficit of 500 calories per day, and have felt pretty good. The last 3 days I have been running about a 900 calorie deficit, and I…

Lifting on a budget
For the last six years I've been a member of the gym which got built literally a hundred yards from my front door, and I absolutely love it. However, you pay through the nose for a membership there, to the tune of over $200/mo for my family of six. My wife used to go but never does anymore, while my kids are only…

Recommendations for Compound Lifts in lieu of squats/deadlifts
Are there other compound lifts where I can feel like I am working my body and not body parts? I am 50 and progress has slow due to a knee/shoulder issues. The shoulder issue seems to have resolved. However, the knee has not (surgery and arthritis). I can't squat with a bar. It feels fine until the next day when I can…

Lifting on a deficit

Observations, lessons learnt and current issues.
Hi all, So as per my previous thread for advise, I have been upping my calories from 1600 to 2000 for the last few months. I am AMAZED that I can actually eat this much food and have not gained any weight aside from water, glycogen increases periodically through out this learning journey. WOW is all I can say. I have also…

Should I be eating more?
I have been frustrated with my lack of weight loss lately, so sat down and spent some time going over my diary with a judgmental eye (need to reduce my sodium). My caloric intake is set to 1700 based on the plan with my dietician. On workout days, I am to add an extra 200-400 calories depending on the workout. I have…

60 days in - Do I need to tweak calories/exercise?
I haven't introduced myself properly here. But I've spent a lot of time the last couple months lurking/reading these threads and trying to figure out who knows what they're talking about and who doesn't! :) Anyway, I'm 60 days into working on my fat loss, have some metrics to work with, and want to get a "check-up"…

Heart Attack
Had a heart attack this past Saturday. Two, actually. Ridiculously painful events. Got 3 stents in the big arteries (85% blocked) and one angioplasty in a smaller one (100% blocked, this one caused the heart attack). All things considered, I got lucky for a couple reasons: 1. The completely clogged small artery caused the…

Supplements!?!?
So I got on examine.com (great website). Did some research and it appears that the following are supplements that actually do something: Beta-Alinine, Creatine, Vitamin D, Fish Oil and a Multi. What are your opinions on these and are there others that are worth looking into? I read that BCAAs and Glutamine don't really do…
