Determining proper squat stance
I read a suggestion online about how to decide how wide to place your feet doing squats, wanted to get the opinion of the crew here. Sit down on a bench or box with height where your legs are at the bottom of your squat depth. Put your feet one inch apart, try to stand up. You'll automatically lean forward to shift your…

Cooking with cast iron
I cook in cast iron pans, but cannot find any information on how to add the iron content to my logs. Does anyone have a way to calculate that information? Thank you!

Routine advice please
On reflection I must confess I have not been as consistent in the gym as I'd like. For a bit of context, my wife and I work over 110 hrs per week between us, and we have two small school-aged kids, a house to keep etc. There are many excuses/reasons for why I have not progressed as much as I'd hoped - as every person on…

Neck injury ; advice?
crap. I do the stairmaster at least 30 mtes a day, with a 40 lbs sandbag on my shoulder. Yesterday, when I lifted it to put it in place( while climbing), I went too fast and jammed it in my neck. I did this move hundreds of times. So mad at myself! My neck is really sore, and I am competing this coming Saturday. What do…

Shopping for a new scale
Im looking to replace my scale, which is doing strange things. I would like it to be reliable, reasonable (under $200) and fairly simple to use. I also want as reliable bodyfat measurement as you can get with one of these things. Sports authority has an omron scale that includes a handheld electrical impedence unit as well…

PL meet recap
Hey! Competed in my second PL meet. I'm happy with how I did overall, although I missed my last DL attempt and I really wanted it but I just plain ran out of steam. Bar went off the floor fairly fast, got it to just below my knees and it went straight back down. Hitting that last pull would have gotten me to 1200 total…

Hi, my name is Tim, and I'm a butt winker...
So a post from Iron Radio came up in my FB news feed this morning. It was about butt-winking during squats, and it had a video. I watched the video, and I LOL'd. However, it DID make me finally understand what a butt wink is, so that's a plus. The other plus was when i checked my form during my workout today. At a warmup…

so, i don't get it
The first photo was taken on April 4th, second one was May 10th. What has me confused are my measurements. According to my friend the tape measurer it states I've gained 1.5" in arms, 3" in chest and 3" in shoulders, 0" in waist or other areas. Scale is down 6 lbs. I'm guessing bad measurements in the beginning?

Have I Gained Muscle or Fat?
Hi. I had lost all my excess weight by July of last year. Since then I am up about four pounds. I have assumed it is fat, since over the holidays, etc. I did eat more. But how do I know for sure? Maybe I've actually gained muscle, since I wasn't eating at a deficit anymore?

Powerlifting Result, Mobility Question, and a Vid that shows "Unltimate definition of a 1RM"
So, to keep the Gym Rat thread from being me posting PB's all the time, Though I'd leave my latest comp Vid at the bottom... Question - On comp day, On Bench, I get insane Cramps in my Hip flexors. So Much so, I'm borderline having to extend my legs when on the Bench (Which would then fail the lift). Only bonus - It's one…

Bulking Sanity Check
I'm cross-posting to this group for some help. Can you check out my other thread and let me know if the numbers I'm getting seem reasonable? http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10155003/bulking-sanity-check-please-with-numbers#latest

Full-body vs Parts Training
For the past several months I've been doing full-body training, doing supersets with chest/back, legs/shoulders, alternating heavy and light days. I like being able to lift each body part twice per week despite only lifting twice per week, and the results have been good. This week I'm on vacation, so with extra days to hit…

Should I modify training?
Hey everyone, I am a 20 year old 5'6" male. I weigh 151 lbs but have a high bf% (see attached pics) and am looking to get leaner over the summer before possibly bulking in the fall/winter. I have included my workout split below. I was wondering if it looks ok or if I should switch to a different program? I have been…

Cardio - How Much To Do?
Hi. As of a few months ago, I have lost the weight. Walking a lot was a big part of that. I am still walking just as much as I was in order to keep the weight off, and because if I want to take a 5 mile hike, I want to be able to do so. Wondering recently, though, if my walking is affecting my ability to gain muscle. I…

Meal Frequency. Rev up that furnace. LOL.
I've written about this before and I'll be cutting and pasting from a previous thread but this should go here as well. There's a long held belief in the fitness community that eating frequently "boosts your metabolism". Often times analogies are used involving a furnace or a car, and they sound good, but unfortunately they…

Detoxes and Cleanses
There are multiple posts on a daily basis about people wanting to do detoxes and cleanses. Some are merely cutting out say sugar, meat and dairy for a few days to ‘kickstart’ their diet and 'boost' their metabolism and some are much more extreme such as the Master Cleanse/Lemonade Diet. There is no real definition as to…

Recomp or bulk or cut
I am wondering what you would do if you were me. I am 5' 6" 120lbs and 24% body fat per dexa scan. I really want to be closer to 20%. I have been trying to recomp for the last year and have not made much progress. Would you keep with the recomp or bulk then cut or cut then bulk? I did nrolfw and currently doing strong…

Can meal frequency make a difference? Appears if protein is high enough it can.
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/oby.20296/full In summary, consuming increased amounts of dietary protein (35% vs. 15%), more often (six meals vs. three meals/day) decreased abdominal fat and increased postprandial thermogenesis and LBM compared to traditional dietary intakes of protein consumed as three…

Bulking, by the numbers
So, my FitBit gives me a handy average daily intake/expenditure graph. It's overestimating the calories burned by a little bit, but my 30 day average is finally at a surplus: It's a minor, of course, but the bulk only comprises 20something of those days. Anyway, I expect that number to creep upwards as the 30 day sample…

What's next?
I may be jumping the gun here... but - on paper - I have 3 weeks left of the 12-week Madcow intermediate program, and I am wondering what to do next. Not sure if this will affect the choice of next program, but at the end of my current Madcow program - again, on paper - i should have the following maxes: squat 350x3 bench…

Pulled the muscle behind the knee. . . .what caused this?
I seem to have pulled the muscle behind my knee. It is kind of like a dull ache. I'm not sure whether this is from adding some time to my running (I thought I was building gradually enough), lifting (maybe deadlifts? Or sometimes I get some knee pain with squats or lunges. I have to be careful as lifting seems to cause…

Baby's First Bulk
So I need a pep talk and a cold bucket of water to splash in my face. I've been attempting a deficit for a few weeks now and while I know these theses take time, I am going absolutely loony waiting to see some sort of change in my body. I've remained so stagnant that hell, I'd even take the weight gain at this point! I've…

Activating lats
I'm back, and I have another probably stupid question. I'm trying to strengthen my lats to help with my swimming. I've always had a hard time activating my lats. I've now found that with wide grip lat pull downs, I can at least feel it in my right lat, but my left still seems to be lazy. I'm being careful to keep the…
