  • I am going to second (or third... ) the recommendation for Michael Pollan's works, especially In Defense of Food. Really makes you think, but there's no "diet" to follow, just education on simplifying your foods and learning what is in the processed "foods" we eat..

  • Happy birthday!!!!! Mine, too! Here's to staying on track through a day of goodies!
  • I am 5'3.5", and weigh about 130. I wear a 4 in most brands (Anne Taylor Loft, Banana Republic, American Eagle), but I weighed the same in college 5 years ago and wore a 6 or even 8. I am curvier, so I have to buy bigger to accommodate the hips, and then get the waist taken in if necessary. Body comp has more to do with…
  • I enjoyed all Malcolm Gladwell's books, especially Outliers; Charlaine Harris' series are fun, quick reads (Sookie Stackhouse novels); The Giver, by Lois Lowry; Second the recommendations for Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, Count of Monte Cristo, and Hunger Games; All of Jane Austen's works, especially Emma and Pride…
  • I have a full gourmet kitchen, but I still bake eggs every Sunday night to eat throughout the week. I add chopped veggies (usually peppers, spinach, leeks, etc.) and turkey bacon, cut them into small squares, and microwave them in the morning, and usually eat them with a bit of salsa on top.
  • I am much stronger on squat than DL as well, and I DO break parallel or I don't count the squat. My 5x5 lifts maxed out here last round: Squat: 175# DL: 135# I'm 5'4", and weigh 130lbs. Lately I've been trying the hexbar, since I think fear of scraping my shins was screwing with my form. Hoping to improve this round.
  • I like Aria Women's Protein (80 cal per serving). I don't know what makes it "women's" protein, but I like it with almond milk at the end of the day for a chocolate milk snack if I have calories left and haven't met my protein goals. I sometimes mix half a serving with water after my morning workouts before I can get to my…
  • Guys who use the ONLY squat rack to do bicep curls with the barbell. C'mon, man, there are plenty of dubmbells and pre-set barbells out on the floor, and this is the only place I can squat! The lady who does "dynamic stretching" on her way from machine to machine. I've nearly been hit/kicked a number of times! Yes, I am…
  • THANK YOU for your service, all of you! I am married to a Marine and my dad is a former Marine. To all you spouses of deployed Service Members, stay strong, and thank you for your support!
  • Quite a bit of that depends on what you mean by a "cheat day." My cheat days don't (usually!) involve over-processed fatty foods, but I may eat more carbs and calories in general of things that are good for me, like homemade oatmeal pancakes or muffins. I pretty much follow the 90/10 rule: if 90% of what you put into your…
  • When my face is still red after I've had my shower and am putting on my makeup (I am now thinking I might need a longer cool down...). When I meet a PR on the treadmill, but give it another mile just because I still have energy to burn. When going down stairs (or squatting to use the restroom) is torture to my quads. When…
  • I'm a pronator, so I've been buying the Asics Kayanos for the past 8 years and love them. They have carried me through 3 marathons and all the training that goes with them! They can be a bit pricey, though, so sometimes I buy last season's if I find them on sale.
  • Just started round two of StrongLifts (free, google it!) and LOVE it! I modify it, so I probably don't see the gains I would if I followed exactly. I love to run and can't give it up, so running on non-lifting days probably slows down the strength gains. And I only do 2 days (again, running...) I failed at 175# on squat,…
  • I don't stop when I'm tired, I stop when I'm DONE.
  • I'm proud of myself for setting a new PR today! I ran 4 miles in 30:33! And that's breaking the record of 30:46 I just set yesterday! This time last year, that's how long it took me to run 3 miles!!!
  • I love my Nike running shorts with underwear built in. I have the same pair in 5-6 different colors. My husband has Under Armour compression shorts he uses for lifting that he really likes.
  • Every Sunday night, I use a mixer to blend 8 large eggs and 4 egg whites, add a whole chopped red pepper, green pepper, tomato, and lots of spinach, add a bit of garlic powder and red pepper flakes, and bake for about 25 min at 350 degrees. I cut it up to make 20 squares, and I pop 4 squares in the microwave for about 1.5…
  • Love me some lavash. I get it at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. They have plain, whole grain, etc. A really big piece is 140 cal, and I use half to make a wrap. I also use it to make lighter pizzas, I got the recipe from www.skinnytaste.com.
  • I think I am in a similar situation. My starting weight was 148 lbs (I'm 5'4") and wore a loose size 6/tight size 4 depending on the brand. Pants were always several inches too big in the waist, but quite a stretch in the hip/thigh area. My current weight is 130, and I am finding that I have become much slimmer in the…
  • I do one day of sprints/speed work during the week when training for a marathon, and I find it really helps my 5k time as plus. It's nice to have one day where you can give it everything and really stretch out your legs rather than having to pace yourself and conserve energy for the miles to come.
  • Monday: before work- lift heavy (deadlift, squat, bench, etc.); 30-45 min Tuesday: before work- Run .5 mi sprints with .25 mi jogs in between on treadmill, total 3 mi; 25-30 min Wednesday: lunchtime/afternoon- Run 5k outside; 25-30 min Thursday: before work- Tempo run on treadmill, 4mi; 35-40 min Friday: before work- lift…
  • I did SL 5x5 for about 5 weeks. I only did it Mondays and Fridays (and modified the start weight) as I had speed goals I was also trying to reach, and it got to a point where one goal was interfering with the other. I will go back and start again (probably not from the beginning) in a few weeks. I really enjoyed it, got my…
  • Oops, I am sometimes guilty of dropping the weights. But that's what bumpers are for, right? Sometimes it takes everything you've got just to get the weight up there! I try to remember that maybe some of the people seemingly just there to read/text/talk on the phone may be recovering from an injury. Either way, I guess…
  • Only because I live 30 minutes away and I work out before work. But I always wear shower shoes. If I go for a run in the afternoon and go back to work, I just soap up at the gym shower and wash my hair when I get home.
  • Hehe! So true!! These made me smile, especially #8 (WHY is he always there, yet never actually working out?) and #23. Thanks for the laughs!
  • I miss Diet Dr. Pepper so bad.... I gave it up not for weight loss or acid reasons, but because my dentist said it was giving me cavities. I went from a perfect check up (the tech said the only cleaner teeth she'd seen were other dental hygienists' teeth) to 5(!!!) cavities six months later after starting to drink Diet DP…
  • You are super cute! Congratulations! I think it says a lot about you that you didn't like something, made a goal to change it, and followed through on a long-term commitment. You look great!
  • Agreed. Definitely go straight to the gym. It helps me get to the gym in the morning before work if I immediately put on my workout clothes and have my bag packed the night before. What if you changed into your gym clothes at work? More accountability that way, too!
  • I am just now getting back to heavy lifting, but last year my 1 rep max on the squat was 220 lbs, and 225 lbs for the dead lift. I hope I can get back there, and even add weight!
