I started out doing a couch to 5k plan... I used the zenlabs app on my phone that did a basic run walk run program. I got injured and had to stop, but finally completed it. I'd recommend a Spartan or Tough Mudder race for a mud run. Especially if you like a HM distance. I did a zombie run once but it was done locally and was their 1st year so it wasn't a great experience but I'd love to try another one.

I started running to lose weight. I started at about 270 and since then have completed 2 half marathons and doing a full in November. I still feel uncomfortable calling myself a runner because I still have fat I need to lose.

With my shin splints I had to turn to the treadmill and drastically drop my mileage, then built it back up. Then did the same thing when I started to run roads again. I already had a heart rate monitor so I bought the forerunner 10. It does exactly what you described: distance, time and pace. It seems to be very accurate.
