  • Didn't work at all for a friend of mine. Apparently you can still cheat the system by eating things like ice cream. They wound up gaining weight. I also suspect they weren't mentally prepared for some of the side effects (vomiting if you eat too much, etc). Be very honest with your doctor about your eating habits as that…

  • I don't have an Alta but I highly recommend something that monitors HR. I have the charge 2 and it's fairly accurate with my heart rate - even picking up my sinus arrhythmia. And it definitely makes a difference IMHO when working out.
  • Too poor :D I focus on the smaller things like "oh! I can have ice cream today!"
  • Premier protein shakes (premixed not powder). I had to start using these when I got sick of chicken.
  • I take 20mg of fluoxetine with no side effects but meds aren't one size fits all. Haven't heard of fluoxetine messing with appetite though. The Pill on the other hand...
  • Typically 1200 is considered the lowest you should go unless you're working with a doctor. It's more to make sure you get appropriate nutrition and don't inadvertently harm yourself. I'm not a fan of the whole "starvation mode" stuff. People can clearly starve to death.
  • IF it does, studies (maybe only one study, I read this on CNN a while ago) only indicate a minimal difference between those taking AVC and control groups. Like, 2lbs difference. And that difference went away as soon as they stopped taking AVC. AVC can also destroy your esophagus if you take too much of it (I guess some…
  • There once was a heated argument between Fat vs. Sugar in the diet and which was more detrimental. Fat lost and Sugar won (mostly by appealing to consumers) - manufacturers had to add sugar to help make up for he lack of flavor due to low fat. We now know that certain fats, like saturated fats, aren't particularly good for…
  • I just set the workout to Spinning prior to the start of class. I never eat back 100% or even 80% of my exercise calories because pretty much nothing out there is going to be totally accurate. I have a charge 2, though, and the Fitbit system works differently for different models.
  • Protein shakes are a great supplement. Premier Protein has 30g of protein at 160 calories for the premixed drinks and they're pretty easy to find (I can only vouch for the chocolate flavor). Not sure if they're vegan/vegetarian friendly, though.
  • I have endometriosis and take continuous hormonal BC (no placebo week, just a week of low dose hormones). When I started that pill my weight ballooned spectacularly. However, I'm still capable of losing weight, I just have to be that much more aware of calories and eat at a lower deficit. Currently I eat at 1200 calories a…
  • I've been on a medically supervised diet of less than 1000 calories. It's not very sustainable especially if you exercise and do a lot of cardio ( unless you've had gastric sleeve or something in which case, ask your doctor). You'll set yourself up for binges when the cravings get too severe and because you're having to…
  • IMHO your doctor should have mentioned this to you especially since your dad has been on statins. When I got a reading not so dissimilar to yours I was told A) Fish oil B ) exercise C) watch the diet. I was also a healthy weight and at 29 my doctor told me it was likely genetic in my case. A year later and my labwork was…
  • One thing you can also try is to bump up the incline to .5 or 1%. Treadmills at 0% incline can mimic a slight downhill angle because the tread is moving and can cause your foot to "snap" downward as it makes contact. Or so I've been told. It feels better to me at least.
  • My resting HR is upper 60s-low 70s (when sitting) and HR during exercise is around 170-180. Low blood pressure. I have almost no cardio fitness lol. That being said, my dad discovered he had a congenital heart defect when he was in his 50s because his heart rate and blood pressure started doing wonky things. Might be worth…
  • Depends on how I feel. Tomorrow I have a 90 minute spin class with a tough instructor who loves her hills and jumps. I burn on average 500-600 calories for a 60 minute class (600 according to Fitbit but margin of error and all that) so I can guarantee you I'll be eating some of those calories back tomorrow! Don't set…
  • I am NOT a morning person so I pack a protein shake to drink at the end of my work day and go straight to the gym after work. No stops between, just straight to the gym. When I was working from 7-7 that might mean not getting home until 9 but it always felt worth it. I would also pack pretty much my pjs and shower at the…

  • Protein keeps you full, you want protein. I'll add a vote for premier protein shakes - chocolate. Low calorie, low sugar/carb, and high protein. OhYeah - chocolate shakes aren't bad either but can be harder to find.
  • My only issue with posts like these is regarding people, like myself, who work with their doctor and are cleared for a medically supervised low calorie diet. Right now my doctor is ok with me eating 900-1000 calories a day and I work with her, a trained professional who knows my medical history. I understand there are…
  • The article I saw referenced says those taking something like 2 tablespoons or teaspoons (can't remember but not a lot) saw an additional 2 lb weight loss. They supposedly used a double blind study for this. And as soon as they stopped drinking the vinegar those extra 2 lbs came back. Saw this on CNN.com and didn't really…
  • Squats, squat jumps, lunges, lunge switches, wall-sits. You can't isolate one muscle group completely unfortunately....
  • Right now I'm avoiding the grocery store and ordering health food from a local chain 'cause I can't help myself in the chip/candy/ice cream isles LOL. The struggle is real. I have healthy food at home - frozen veggies that I need to eat and what not but the binge potential is too great if I step inside a store at the moment
  • A) check the label for accuracy B ) some companies will inject raw chicken with a sodium solution. Raw chicken by itself is usually around 3-5% sodium. Much higher than that and they've added something.
  • I haven't been having a problem...hope it stays that way.
  • A meal replacement shake is something like slim fast or special k. You're not supposed to add anything to those (make sure you serve cold) as they are complete in and of themselves. PROTIEN shakes are a different game and some people will add things like peanut butter to amp up flavor and protein. Protein shakes are not…
  • It helps me to see the numbers and then I can decide if I can have that treat. So if offered, I go ahead and pull out MFP on my phone and see what happens to my macros and calorie count. If I can justify it (was too deficient the day before or looking low that day) then I'll go ahead and eat it. Nothing wrong with being…
  • Opposite here, I don't spend much money on workout clothes - I just need them to last and look a little flattering. I buy off brand workout capris (?) and they seem to last. The one thing I DONT skimp on are my shoes. Feet are important.
  • I try not to hold on so I'm getting the most out of my workout (i.e. Teaching my body to do it itself and not use a "crutch"). It's more gradual but I feel like my body is actually learning and adapting rather than forcing something it's not ready to do. However, I am an easily distracted ditz on a treadmill so I…
  • I would too if that's all I'd eaten! Go for more protein, legumes, Greek yogurt, chicken, etc.
