  • Hi all - late to the game, as December is nearly over, but I’ll be checking in for a January group! I’m Kristen in Ontario, Canada. I’ve been on and off MyFitnessPal for years, and I’m back again. I’ve had some issues with my feet that have made it hard to get steps in, but I have newly fitted orthotics & hoping to get…
  • Eggplant, zuchini, sweet peppers, leeks : brush with olive oil and grill, add a little salt and pepper or other herbs/spices. These are great right away, and also leftover in a salad with a little goat cheese and balsamic vinegar. Carrots/cauliflower/brussels sprouts/ sweet potatoes (eggplant works here too) : toss with…
  • If that's what you normally do every day, you can just set your activity level appropriately. Sometimes, if I'm actually moving and working hard for a long time, I'll log it as light cleaning (in the data base)
  • My funniest one is really my Grandmas. When my sister and I were teenagers, our Grandma took us to the Roller skating rink and taught us to roller skate. SHe was doing this for exercise, and they had a small fitness room there too, so we went there after skating and Grandma was doing sit-ups -- until she let go a very loud…
  • Real true undying love -- is a lot of work, and commitment to working through problems, forgiving each other and sticking together. My 25th anniversary is coming up in July, and our marriage is better now than ever.
  • Just joined a 5k training group -- I'm not a runner, so this is a real challenge for me

  • Plus, most of us don't base our eating decisions on math and physics -- there are tons of social, emotional and mental issues as well. So, just because I KNOW certain eating patterns are bad for me, maybe I choose that anyway because of habits, because all my friends are doing it, because for my whole life I've coped with…
  • LOVE Robin Mckinley, especially the fairy tales and the Blue Sword books -- she has a vampire book out that is pretty awesome in a creepy way...Sunshine
  • My husband has been really supportive -- loves all the new healthy food I'm cooking and sent me shopping for new clothes when I got down 20 pounds. He's always been in better shape than me, and he loves that I'm getting more active. Lucky me!
  • Stir fry is the easiest -- lean chicken, lots of veggies -- make a sauce of 1/2 soya sauce and 1/2 rice vinegar (or lemon juice will work too) with some ginger, garlic -- add a little sesame oil or some nuts at the end. Stay away form the rice and noodles, and the deep-fried stuff, and you can still do the take-out once in…
  • Ontario too -- burned my calories shovelling snow today!
  • Go online and decide what to order before you go -- you can check the calories etc.
  • I've lost 20 pounds since the beginning of summer when I joined MFP and a gym. I've averaged a pound a week (with a few episodes of backsliding!) I noticed a difference in my clothes and stuff when I got to about 10 pounds lost. That took a couple of months. I figure it's worth going slowly, because I want this to be a…
  • My first two children were 21 months apart also -- I was SO exhausted that first year -- and I didn't have a job to worry about also. I've had a lot more energy -- maybe the exercise, as much as the weight loss. And a full night's sleep every night! Stick to your goals, it will get better!
  • You are smart and beautiful, You seem less controlled by "convention" -- and perfection is pretty tough on a person. Maybe she's jealous? Maybe she just doesn't "get" you -- and people sometimes don't like what they don't understand. If she's living her life by a set of rules that don't seem to apply to you... I'm the…
  • Strange how we see ourselves... I was always the skinny kid in high school (5'8, 110 lbs) and still "felt" skinny, even when I was overweight. And my pants were too tight. And then last summer, I had NO clothes that fit! I bought one pair of pants (on sale!) and joined MFP and the gym. I've lost 20 pounds and I don't see…
  • The saying I heard in CHina is "anything that moves with it's back to the sky" Um... liver. mussels. Squid/octopus. Not so common I guess. In the past year I have tried beets and eggplant for the first time, and love them both.
  • When I started back to the gym, I felt like all my gym stuff was really ratty, so I've been rewarding myself with a new workout t-shirt every 5 pounds. I'm up to 4 now, which gets me through the week most weeks -- and I'm about 10 lbs away from my goal (at which point I will start replacing all my baggy pants!lol)
  • Pick your favourite -- calculate the calories mentally (or look em up!) I used to do the same -- graze constantly -- now I activiely think: "is this worth 100 calories (or 500 or whatever)" and if it totally is, then eat it and really enjoy it. If not, hold out for the good stuff...
  • I'm another Canadian ( but from southern Ontario, so our winter weather is pretty wimpy compared with Calgary or "Winterpeg") I like having the seasons -- and I like the snow (first snowfall this morning, but it only lasted about 1/2 hour). You have to dress for the weather -- good boots, and a warm coat and whatever else.…
  • steel cut oats, cottage cheese and pecans -- I think it's mostly about the protein if you want it to stick with you. Also habit -- if you're used to eating after a couple hours, you'll start to feel hungry then
  • sizes are tricksy! I wore an 8 in high school ( in the 80s) -- and now I'm in 10 or 12 depending on the brand -- but I weigh 40 pounds more than I did then! I think part of the reason I put on weight over the years without realizing it was because my size in the stores didn't change much. Also depends where you are. My SIL…
  • I save calories and plan an evening snack. Also, doing something that keeps my hands busy -- if I read or watch TV I get really munchy (habit!!) so I try to do something else -- knitting works for me -- or checking facebook and MFP. It also helps if I enter the calories on MFP before I eat them. Sometimes just that will…
  • I've had two comments (besides from my family) One was from a very close friend (who has also lost a bunch of weight in the last year) and one time it came up in the conversation, and someone said (something like) "Yeah, I thought you has lost weight" I think it really depends on the person -- my husband is very…
  • So, I've been pretty bad about signing in -- I had a couple of trips and for about a month I've been gaining and losing the same two pounds, so it's kind of depressing to log in and say "so, I'm still at the same weight" week after week. But I finally seem to have had a break-through this week -- I weighed in this morning…
  • I have a pasta salad that I make where I just reduce the oil and increase the vinegar -- it makes it a bit tangier, but it's pretty bland to start with, so I like that. I would do as ohters have suggested, and just reduce the oil. Or leave it out altogether. It may not change the taste too much (and if it does, add a…
  • Asian food, especially the vegetarian options. Asian restaurants tend to be quite inexpensive, lots of fresh veggie options -- just watch out for all those noodles and rice dishes.
  • I cook and they eat (or they don't) but I'm the mom! One thing I sometimes do is just skip the carb portion -- the rice or the noodles or bread -- but eat the rest, and extra veggies if I need more volume
  • You could also add in a couple of snacks, if you find that you really need to eat more calories -- when I have "leftovers" it's usually because my day got really hectic and I missed a snack -- I don't like to eat a whole bunch at the end of the day just to use them up. But it doesn't happen often!
  • I have to limit the pizza -- only once a month or so -- I have trouble stopping with just one slice. I had 3 for supper tonight -- yummy but I feel gross! (so I am cured of pizza craving for a few weeks lol!) I also make tortilla pizzas sometimes -- very yummy! (and without the side effects!)
