Christmas called in the UK
Shout out to everyone else in the UK coping with the crappy news from yesterday. Not disagreeing with the seriousness of the situation, but the government should not have promised Christmas time and again then changed their mind at this short notice. Would have been better to tell us all they would make a decision nearer…

Recovering from injury tips
I managed to badly sprain my ankle 8 weeks ago (hopefully a partial tear and not a full one). I am not known for being a patient person but I have been SO good. Have used my crutches, done my mobility exercises, and doing revised workouts as programmed by my coach. Close to getting off the crutches now and I am tempted to…

How early is too early for Christmas?
It’s been a hard, odd year, and a lot of people are suffering with country-wide lockdowns, illness or politics. So let’s have a debate which hopefully will not end up getting closed (unlike my last one 😱). I LOVE Christmas and need the joy and sparkle this year, not to mention helping others is really needed right now. I…

Red wine vinegar!
Makes a change from apple cider vinegar posts! I bought a bottle to use in some braised red cabbage; guessing it’s probably good as a salad dressing but I could do with some other recipes / ideas. Anyone got anything yummy they want to share?

One diet doesn’t fit all - new research!
The New Scientist has just published some research into the effect of food on blood sugar levels (it’s behind a paywall so I can’t insert a hyperlink, but you can get a synopsis if you google it). In a nutshell, the researchers were surprised to find big variations in different individuals for the same food, and included…

Face mask or no face mask?
Hot topic which seems to get everyone riled! I have been wearing a mask for ages, before the UK made in mandatory in shops. I will also use one in the gym; I’m asthmatic and get dreadful hay fever so I’ve frequently used face coverings when exercising outdoors. Not the most comfortable thing but no biggie to me.

Cucumber recipes
I need recipes for cucumbers! I really like them, and will happily munch them as a snack or in tzatziki, but I’m being overrun from the plants in my greenhouse. I’ve taken to fly- tipping the neighbours in the evening when they can’t say no, but they’re now doing the same to me with courgettes. I’m getting about 5 a day…

Macros for strength
There have been a few threads on macros recently, but I’m interested in what macro percentages lifters have - specifically women. Most of the journal (scientific) evidence seems to be based on men or young women (I’m mid-40s). Lift 4 times a week, 121 pounds and c20% body fat. I’m not looking to gain or lose - although…

Any oly lifters with home gyms?
I’m trying to plan a covered area outside for my platform; could be a shed-type structure / maybe even a wooden garage. Just trying to find out what height others have, obviously with oly lifting you need a high clearance for the lifts (bar and plates overhead). It’s not something which is that easy to find online!
-
Workout shorts!
I need some new shorts which are squat-proof, not really short but tight fitting for my oly lifts (so running shorts aren’t any good). All the booty shorts are brief and I’d rather not flash that much of my thighs in public. I’m in the UK - any recommendations?

I have a bad cold - give me your local cures!
Let me start by saying I know you can’t really cure a cold, I just have to let it run it’s course. But I feel horrible with a hacking cough and I’m grumpy. Mainlining honey and lemon in hot water - what do you do / any weird and wonderful loca cures I can try?

Knee sleeves for lifting
Hey everyone, Any shorter lifters out there? What knee sleeves do you use? I’m using SBD but they’re too tight on my calves and giving me cramp. I need to get a new pair and ideally I’d like shorter ones. I’m in the UK so would rather order from here in case they need to be returned. Having spent a decent amount of money…

Powerlifting belts for petite women!
I’m struggling to get a powerlifting belt which fits - both around my waist and between my ribs and hip bones. I’m 5 feet 3 inches and have a 26 inch waist. Ideally I want a lever belt as I’m using a two-pronged crossfit style tapered belt at the moment which is really annoying to get off and isn’t IPF legal (not competing…

Competition food
I’ve got a PL comp in a couple of weeks: weigh in at 8am then lifts from 10am, should be finished by 2pm. For all the experienced lifters out there, what do you take to eat? Do you just rely on sugar and stuff like flapjack to get you through? I generally eat a lot (for my size) but I can’t deadlift on a full tummy... any…

Smart trousers to fit weightlifting thighs!
I’m in the UK and really struggling to get clothes to fit my substantial thighs. Anyone got any good leads? Buying a bigger size and getting them adjusted is one option, but I’m also petite (apart from my thighs!) so I end up with some very odd looking clothes if I’m not careful! 🤣

And the award for the body part with the worst doms is....
I’m voting for glutes. Probably because I’ve just squatted four times a week for a month and my glutes are KILLING me. What is everyone else’s worst doms?

Palm-oil free Nutella substitute?
Does anyone know of a palm-oil free chocolate spread? I use it to make protein muffins (runny chocolate centre) but all the versions I’ve found so far use palm oil.

Gym shoes!
My Asics gym shoes are dying: I have lifting shoes and deadlift slippers, but I need a good basic pair of trainers for accessory work / cardio. I hate padded trainers and prefer low profile ones: going to have to buy online as I live in a rural area. Interested in what gym goers / strength athletes wear, and…

DOMS
Just wanted to whinge and whimper: on a hypertrophy phase of my training, and that coupled with learning oly lifts means my glutes are KILLING me. Whimper... 😥

First powerlifting comp
First powerlifting comp coming up in a few days. I’m doing all the usual stuff, following my coach’s instructions, resting well etc. Any sage advice from the experienced lifters out there? Any tips you wished you knew for your first meet?
