What do you eat with chili?
I'm curious about a BBQ chicken chili recipe but I have not eaten chili before. Is it a stand-alone dish? if not, how is it traditionally eaten? and what do you personally eat it with?

Very low calorie creative meals
Alright, so after a few weeks of being on a break maintaining I'm ready to hop into the wagon again. I feel like doing the every other day diet where I eat 500 calories one day and roughly 2500 the next. Now I'm fine with skipping breakfast, but I have a problem sticking to one meal, so I tend to have lunch and dinner. I…

Structured beginner yoga routine?
I'm doing a variety of workouts but I feel I'm missing something more controlled and relaxed. I'm looking into starting yoga, but I have never done anything of the sort before. I don't have access to a yoga class so I'm looking for a structured program with proper progression from absolute beginner to advanced. My interest…

Why do diet and fitness doohickies cost so much?
A while back I wanted to buy resistance bands. The guy wanted me to pay 50 dollars for them! No thank you. I got some 20 cent rubber string, the kind used in pants. 4 meters (about 13 feet) of it cost me less than a dollar - I bought 10 of these to experiment with. I cut it into the lengths I wanted and braided it to give…

Feeling too full and stuffed
So from my experience I know the foods and the things that make me feel full 1. Food that "looks" big, even if it does not weigh as much (example: popcorn) 2. Food that weighs a lot 3. Certain kinds of food which (for the purpose of this thread) include oats, milk, tomatoes, garlic and eggs 4. Fiber So I was bored and…

Peanuts help improve body composition!
I found this interesting study. In diets of the same caloric value, a diet that includes peanut products lead to more fat oxidation and improved body composition. Thoughts? http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/enhanced/doi/10.1002/oby.20746/

Plot driven books
When I go on my long walks I like to listen to audio books. I just zone out and listen while I walk. For this purpose, I enjoy books that have a strong plot, not too wordy, fast paced without being confusing, easy to follow, keep you engaged and leave you hungry for more. Just remember the goosebumps and detective books…

Running
So after about 3 years of recovery from a knee injury, I'm finally cleared to start doing some light jogging. I started couch to 5k and I'm actually enjoying the jogging part. My problem is that it looks all the incline walks I have been doing have improved my cardio fitness but my legs are really out of shape, probably…

Shakiness, dizziness and slight nausea after workout
I did a 90 minute incline walk today burning 824 net calories in one session. Before the workout I had a small snack: a greek yogurt sandwich and a tomato for 15 carbs, 5 protein and 3 fat, plus a coffee and my B vitamin pill (I'm deficient because I don't like meat). My workout went like this: 5 minutes warm up 40 minutes…

Baking soda and beetroot juice for better endurance?
I have recently taking a liking to long incline walks (long compared to my previous activity level is anything over 30 minutes). I just zone out and and enjoy the "me time". The problem is more often than not, since I walk a high incline, I cannot last as long as I would like. I've seen some research about improved aerobic…

Finding out eat-back exercise calories
It's often mentioned on MFP forums to only eat back half or 75% of your exercise calories. This is due to the difference between gross calories (total calories burned) and net calories (calories burned excluding those you would have burned at rest during the same timeframe). Net is what one should use for eat-back…

Walking and elevation.. How I bit more than I could chew
So for my walk today I felt like changing scenery. I plotted a nice route for myself using google maps, somewhere I've never been to before. I wanted it nice and straight on what looked like a nicely paved road on the map. I was in a great mood and wanted everything to be perfect! Getting lost in an unfamiliar area would…

Things to do with egg whites?
My dog has been prescribed eggs recently. He hates egg whites and won't come near them, but thankfully egg yolks is why eggs were prescribed in the first place. This means I'm left with 10 or so egg whites weekly which I don't know what to do with other than an egg white omelette... this will get boring in no time. Any…

Where did the value 1 g protein per lb come from?
Since metric units are the standard in science and most research, where did the convenient 1 g per lb come from? I'm not here to debate the number, I'm just curious about the research it's based on.

What's a safe calorie amount to be netting?
I have taken up brisk walking (9 min/km or 4 mph) and I burn 774 calories for a 90 minute walk as per MFP and about 995 as per my heart rate monitor. I have my calories set at 1800. Is that a safe number or should I increase it further?

Question about intermittent fasting
I'm planning to go 3:4 and I know I should be eating about 500 calories on fasting days. My question is, is that supposed to be a fixed number? I mean if I exercise, do I eat back on the same day or do the exercise calories carry over to the next non-fasting day?

Is there such a thing as a "mild" PCOS?
I was recently diagnosed with "mild" PCOS. Losing weight sure helped keep some symptoms reigned in (like I'm finally getting my periods regularly when they used to come once every 3-6 months and my fasting blood sugar seems to have gone down) My main issue seems to be high cortisol and testosterone. Because I'm "mild" and…

What's your average serving size?
Due to my previous thread going to a weird place (made me chuckle but did not satisfy my curiosity) I'm reposting and rephrasing here! I'm not talking about serving sizes listed on boxes. I'm talking about YOUR serving size, before the diet, before paying attention, just the customary size perceived as average in your…

How big is your average cucumber?
I wasn't sure where to post this, because it's more of a curiosity than nutrition. Inches not being my standard measuring unit, I just logged a cucumber as a cucumber without paying attention to the size. How off could it be? It's mostly water. Today I had some weird cucumber craving and and had four average ones. When I…

Advice on workout DVDs
I have mostly been walking for exercise, and I love it.. because I get to just zone out while listening to an audiobook and burning calories. I will not stop walking but I'm ready to introduce some more strength training. I don't have access to a good gym or any equipment (other than two 5KG dumbbells). I'm not awfully fit…

What if that was the last thing you said to someone?
After being active around here for a while, and seeing that some people tend to bicker and take certain stances that may be perceived as hurtful to someone else, I thought this is worth sharing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBc2kw8aHRM&feature=em-uploademail :flowerforyou: to everyone

What's a good lean body mass for a 5'6 woman?
I recently had my body fat analyzed, and I'm at 65 kg (about 143 pound) lean body mass. I'm still too overweight, that's why the number is high. (current weight 105 kg/231 pounds) In several posts I read I should be eating a minimum of 1g protein per lb of lean body mass. 143 protein a day seems like an outlandish number…

Glycemic Index vs Amount of Carbs
I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes about a year ago. My base level blood sugar was 110-120 - a touch away from officially being called diabetic. A year later and with a good amount of weight loss I am now down to an almost normal baseline 85-90. I am not taking any medications and I never have, but I have educated myself on…

Does a treadmill consume a lot of electricity?
Since walking is my favourite exercise I'm considering buying a treadmill because it's usually too hot outside in the summer. I'm planning on using it for 1-2 hours a day. Those who own a treadmill, how much did your electricity bill go up when you started using one at home?

Calorie per gram, I thought I invented that!
So I'm a volume (mass?) eater, I always have been. That's how I ended up this way. When I decided to lose weight, my main problem was cutting down portion sizes (mine were at least triple the recommended amount). Along the way I've learned a few tricks - blended broth based soups have a very low calorie density per gram…

Cultural eating habits - tell us about yours
It's interesting to see how people in different places eat differently. When I first visited the US I had to search very hard for a brand of bread I liked because most varieties tasted "too sweet" to me, which where I come from is almost unheard of, unless it's some kind of sweet roll or fluffy braid. I also remember the…

"The Walk" App Adaptive Difficulty
I've purchased the app when it was on discount and so far I've done 2 maps, which was weirdly fun. Now the third map is a challenge, you are supposed to collect as many "thingies" as possible. In the settings, there is an option which enables "adaptive difficulty" adjusting the challenge to your fitness level. I'm…
