What do you eat with chili?

I'm curious about a BBQ chicken chili recipe but I have not eaten chili before. Is it a stand-alone dish? if not, how is it traditionally eaten? and what do you personally eat it with?

I like my chili with a side of chili, often with chili for dessert.

Oh, and the spicier, the better!

I like chili with some shredded cheese & dollop of sour cream, and if it's not oniony enough for me, I will put chopped raw onion on top as well.

I used to include crackers or corn chips with that (mixed into the chili) but I don't really miss those now.

I like it best with cornbread. My husband prefers oyster crackers.

Sour cream and avocado for me. <3 Depending on the chili and my mood, sometimes some bread to mop up the juice.

It can be stand alone. Many dip bread into it.

Tortilla chips! Also, I top my chili with shredded cheese and sour cream. Sometimes I add a green salad on the side.

Not sure if it's a southern thing or if people do it elsewhere too, but I like chili over a split baked potato. Then, topped with shredded SHARP cheddar cheese, a little sour cream, and a sprinkling of diced green onion. :P

DIced onion, fresh sliced jalapeno, a little sour cream and a little shredded cheese. Ditto on the corn bread and a glass of sweet tea (Ugh..I wish I had a bowl right NOW) The next day I use the left overs and make frito chili pies or chili mac :)

I make cornmeal dumplings and drop them on top. It reminds me of tamales which I LOVE but not nearly the work. Send me a message and give you the recipe

Chili simply isn't chili without pb&j. Tear the sandwich in half and dunk it in the chili. Life is as it should be.

Haven't had chili since I started MFP, but when I did it was either:

    • Cornbread
    or
    • Cheese and crushed-up crackers

I don't usually do it anymore, but cinnamon rolls. Strange combo, I know, but growing up the school cafeteria always served those together and it's really pretty awesome. I kind of want chili and cinnamon roll for lunch now, mmmmm ????

If you want a healthy way to eat chili, I usually eat baby carrots and /or cucumbers for the crunch factor. They taste great with typical beef chili and I'm sure it will taste great with yours. Occasionally, I'll eat a few tortilla chips with it too and throw in jalapeno peppers or hot sauce for some zip.

  • I can agree with most of the other posters, it can be a meal, or side dish, or topping. Before MFP - over elbow macaroni (or starchy potato) with a sprinkle of cheese.

If I'm eating it straight up, saltines and margarine (I know. I know.)

I like mine hot (like my family runs in terror) so we usually have some sour cream around for the wussy.

To me, it's the only way to eat chili. :)

My mother always poured it over Fritos with parmesan cheese on top (well, that stuff in the green can that doesn't need to be refrigerated...not sure it actually counts as "cheese").

I generally make cornbread in an iron skillet to go with, but sometimes instead I'll crumble a few tortilla chips on top for the crunch with fewer calories. A sprinkle of Mexican cheese, a dollop of sour cream or plain greek yogurt, a few chunks of avocado.

Oh man, when is autumn getting here so I can make this???

I love chili as is, but I will make rice for my hubby - and he puts the chili on the rice. I have also used quinoa as well. You can do whatever you want with it - corn bread, garlic bread - I tend to put tons of veggies in everything I make, so I would add those to the chili pot - zucchini or peppers or cauliflour or whatever I happen to have on hand...experiment, enjoy!

This is BBQ chicken chili which would be a bit different than my standard red beef chili. However, one way to stretch chili is to serve over macoroni to get Chilimac. You can never go wrong with cheddar cheese or sour cream with almost any kind of chili. My personal favorite is the chili dog:

Potato hot dog roll, Ballpark Angus beef premium hot dog, French's mustard, cheddar cheese, and some chili on top. I may have to ride my bike for an hour to make up for the chili dogs, but I don't plan to ever give them up.
