Sleep More, Weigh Less
Just found this link: http://newsroom.heart.org/pr/aha/lack-of-sleep-may-increase-calorie-230068.aspx YMMV.

"Fat Chance: An Analysis of Anti-Obesity Efforts"
This is a link to a research paper that discusses obesity in the US and the efforts by various organizations "to improve social welfare by implementing a set of prescriptive policies designed to remedy systematic mistakes made by individuals." I've read very little that reviews government efforts in this area and I found…

Interesting Studyabout Nutrients during Weight Loss
This article discussed two studies on nutrition, one during weight loss. When I was losing weight, I swapped my protein and carb percentages, thinking that the higher percentage of protein would help me not feel hungry. I used a diet of 800 to 1k net cals/day so I hoped that the increased protein level would help with the…

Seeking Information on "Why we Get Fat" by Gary Taubes
A comment on a recent thread persuaded me to start this thread. I've read "Why We Get Fat" and found it an entertaining, informative, and persuasive book. I don't know if all of what Taubes argues is correct. IIRC, he provides the historical background for much of what we take as conventional wisdom and, as is so often…

Good Article on Sports Nutrition
I switched to maintenance a while back and started running, so my nutritional needs changed from when I was trying to lose weight. Wandering around the InterTubes, I found this to be a gem of an article. It's short, concise, and, best of all, accurate:…

Portable Help for Muscle Related Problems for Runners
A couple of weeks ago I had my first tussle with knee pain brought on by my IT band. It sucked. Yup, serious pain. If you've never had IT band problems, that's great news. If you have had IT band problems, it's something you'll want to not every have again! A foam roller helped quite a bit but I was thinking about what I'd…

Not Porky Any More
I joined MFP in December 2010 and it's been instrumental in changing my life. I've lost almost 100 pounds, have dropped my BP significantly (I've stopped taking BP meds and the little blue pill", as well), and am now training for a half marathon in August followed by a full marathon in December. Even though my focus is has…

Sugar Goals Too Low?
It seems like my sugar goals are "too low" - when I look back over my diary, I've almost never been able to stay below my goal of 26 grams of sugar (I just skimmed my diary and found 3 days out of 200). When I total it up, I've hit my 26 grams if I have an apple and some veggies. Toss in anything other than salmon fins or…

Losing Weight while Training for a Half-Marathon
I've managed to lose most of the weight that I want to lose and I'm thankful to have been able to use MFP to help me make progress toward that goal. In the past few weeks, I've started running again and am in the process of training for a half-marathon in August. This change presents a meal planning/dietary challenge for…

What the Missing Ingredient in "Carbs"
I was checking my nutrition stats a few days ago and something jumped out at me that I couldn't make sense of. These stats are from my food diary on June 18, 2011: Total Carbs = 84 out of 129 (goal) which is 45 g under goal Dietary fiber = 25 out of 15 (goal) which is 10 g over goal Sugars = 31 out of 26 (goal) which is 5…

Seeking Nutrition Info for Losing Weight and Training for a
I'm training for a half marathon that will be run on August 21. From my stats and diary and my weight loss metrics are here http://cbeinfo.net/weight.htm My training program is from Runner's World and I've been running, again, for a few weeks and I feel good when I run. Per the Subject line, my goals are to continue to…

Iced Tea Maker
Thought that I'd pass this along because I've had a few folks tell me that they've never heard of them. I need to increase my water consumption because of my increased exercise level and, since I'm not a big water drinker, I brought my iced tea maker out of retirement. Iced tea makers are inexpensive, very easy to use, and…

Google Maps Pedometer for Running/Walking
I've decided I want to start running again, after a 25 year layoff! I just ran "around the block" (literally) to see how things would feel and I checked out my mileage on Google maps. Check out this URL: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ It's pretty easy to use (look for the "Usage Instructions" link) and, when you're done…

Changed Percentages of Carbs, Protein, and Fat as Weight Dec
I just clicked the "update my goals" and I'm pretty certain that MFP has changed my CPF percentages such that my carbs are significantly increased. MFP is using 55/15/30 whereas I was using 40/40/20. Can anyone confirm that the percentages do change as weight decreases? Also, does anyone know the rationale behind the…

Treadmill Desk
I design and write software for a living which means that I sit at a desk and type. Not much chance to lose weight while I'm chained to a desk, is there? Well, actually, there is! At a conference last fall, a fellow programmer told me about a "treadmill desk" that he uses. Yes, it's a treadmill parked in front of his desk.…

Simple Scale "Trick"
This is a simple idea and lots of you folks might already know about it but it's new to me so I thought I'd pass it along. I have a tupper of tuna fish salad (yeah, first mayonnaise in 29 days!) and I wanted a 4 oz portion. I leave a small tupper that I use to weigh stuff on my scale, so I could just scoop out of the big…

Protein Levels too Low?
MFP says I need 1,710 calories and 64 grams of protein. The protein seems very low since just one 8 oz protein drink is 26 grams. Doesn't 64 grams of proteing seem low for a male who's 6' 1" and 276? I'm assuming that protein is measure in grams - is that correct? Thanks for your feedback!

Homemade LoCal Salad Dressing
I'm new to this site (started 12/9/2010) and one of the many eye openers for me was how many calories there are in salad dressing. Yes, I'd always known that there were about 120 calories in a serving but that never bothered me…until 12/9/2010! I switched to a low fat dressing and that was OK for calories (50 cals in 2…
