Thanksgiving signature cocktail
Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it! Especially Canadians who celebrate it twice. :drinker: At DD parents weekend recently, we had the most ridiculously involved conversation about margaritas with roommate parents. You would think it was a barkeep convention or something. Anyhoo, I threw out that my resurrection…

What is everyone thinking about making for Easter?
For those who celebrate Easter, how do you celebrate? Do you have dishes that are family favorites or new things you are going to try? We downsized to just our nuclear family of 5 when the pandemic first broke out, and then went to my Mom's the next couple years because she is seriously not mobile but she wants it to be at…

Protein Fluff
Protein fluff and I have not always had an easy time. I think my basic obstacle is I haven't just loved any of the protein powders I've used, although I've had my struggle with consistency as well. I've just had an accidental protein fluff breakthrough. The last 2 weeks my regular store hasn't had my regular plain Greek…

Women over 50 - is it really possible to bulk?
For years I have been saying I'd like to gain 5 lb -- of muscle not fat (vanity). I realize this is a long term project. I'm willing to undertake a long term project, though, and that isn't the reason I've avoided it. The real reason I haven't stepped to the plate is uncertainty. At the end of a year+ effort, will I really…

Scale weight
One the boards we often comment on the components of scale weight, namely that lean mass and body fat don't vary tremendously from day to day but that hydration accounts for most of the daily fluctuation (for several possible reasons). Another variable mentioned is food in transit. I had my first colonoscopy today (yay-…

oil sprayer -- what's going wrong?
I received this product for Christmas. https://www.amazon.com/Misto-Brushed-Aluminum-Oil-Sprayer/dp/B00004SPZV I followed instructions with this canola oil. https://www.instacart.com/products/20130705-carlini-canola-oil-48-fl-oz It sprays as advertised. It's not as fine a spray, so we brush the oil around in the pan to get…

Red Velvet Cake
Hi, friends. I'm thinking about making a small red velvet cake in a heart shaped pan for DH for valentines. Red velvet is his favorite. I've never made one before. He's in a calorie deficit (and counting) these days so a sugar free version would help (both of us). I did a search, and the hits were from 2011 so I thought it…

Any Velvet Taco lovers?
If so, I’m interested in how you log it, i.e. your entries & quantities. I’m happy to share mine for #2 rotisserie chicken and #3 tikka chicken. Those are my faves. I’ve taken out backdoor chicken, so I know corn tortillas are 40g. Haven’t taken out anything else so no opportunity to deconstruct. But honestly, it’s so GOOD…

What does 100g of (fill in blank) look like?
Today specifically, I'm wondering what 100g of frosted layer cake looks like. Because I'm going to a party with cake tonight and I've saved calories for it. I'm pretty good at eyeballing the things I eat often, but cake isn't one of them, sadly. It occurs to me that it might be helpful to have a thread documenting serving…

What are your favorite mocktails?
Cheers, everybody! :drinker: I enjoy these little creations mostly because they're much less caloric than their alcoholic counterparts. My only "rule" is that it tastes interesting and complete on its own without inviting a shot of tequila or some such. Bonus points for being low calorie. Also, if it's a blend of fruits…

Fluff wouldn't fluff. Where did I go wrong?
Hi, MFP-ers. I attempted a fluff for a family member on a high-protein-no-solid-foods diet following bone surgery and a strange anomalous throat issue that happened while hospitalized. ON GS vanilla (scoop ~31g) peanut butter (~2 TBS) whole milk (~1/2c) xanthan (~1/2 tsp) It thickened & got gooey but the fluff part just…

It’s easy for you (rant)
Full disclosure: my antenna are up for people who discount the hard work of others by dismissing any success as “easy for you.” Straight As, professional recognition, weight loss (or maintenance).... it must have been easy or there’s no way you could have achieved it. Hard work, persistence, patience... I’m not giving you…

Anyone know how to hack Shapa scale?
I totally resent how much information —personal information— I have entered and how little— literally, nothing useful—it gives me. Tantalizingly, it says “calculating variance.... calculating muscle mass...” when I step on it, and I want those numbers! I want the variance, I especially want the muscle mass (knowing…

The amazing liver
Sharing this article https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/12/health/liver-bodily-function.html about liver function and evolution. For all the advocates of eating "paleo" like "human ancestors," I found the penultimate paragraph especially interesting: “Our ancestors didn’t have healthy refrigerated food,” he said. “They ate a…

If the stats on long term weight loss are so bad, why bother?
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/02/magazine/weight-watchers-oprah-losing-it-in-the-anti-dieting-age.html I thought this was a really nice article, thoughtfully written. Love the comments, too.

Kale suggstions
Gotta be honest, I don't love it. Love other greens... collards, turnip greens, chard, spinach... just not kale. It's so chew-y. Does anyone cook it in some fashion as a side dish? I have a bunch at the moment and am wondering what I can do to use it this weekend. I'll have lots of teenaged mouths to feed. We'll be smoking…

Food & drug addictions
Many on MFP strenuously object to drawing similarities between food and drug addictions, and I am inclined to agree with them (although I'm not offended by it, either.) Anyway, this in the NYT today for those who are interested. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/30/opinion/sunday/what-cookies-and-meth-have-in-common.html I'm…

Instant Pot fail, need advice
Emeril's pulled pork shoulder recipe has been incredibly reliable for me in my 1980's era sears crockpot. Make it all the time. Always wonderful. Sweet brother gave me an instant pot for Christmas. I had read about them and was intrigued and so I was excited to receive it. Have made pork shoulder in it twice, in slow…

Advice for college bound kids
My middle daughter is a hs senior & plans to go off to college next year (live in dorm). I thought, wow, there are probably 5 things I can think of off the bat I would be more…

Same diet - sudden gas & distension onset?
Has anyone experienced feeling unusually bloated for 2 weeks? Were you able to correlate it to anything? I definitely feel distinctly different from normal, but cannot think of anything I'm doing differently with diet, exercise, sleep, etc. Stepped into the shower the other day and didn't recognize myself in the mirror. My…

Is this healthy?
This article concludes: " Nutrition science is sometimes murky even to experts." I found myself asking, "Murky" or "requires context"? Example: My oldest daughter recently asked, "What's the bottom line on cheese--good or bad? One word, no explanation." I gave her the unsatisfying "it depends." For someone who eats lentils…

"I started weight training and gained 5lb..."
An old friend visiting from out of town told a story last night that sounds similar to one often seen on these boards, with an added twist of having actually had blood work done. She gained 5lb abdominal bloat that persisted 2 months after starting work with a trainer. She strongly believes it was not muscular water…

protein fluff
I'm experimenting with a semifreddo recipe that calls for ricotta and whipped cream. I would like to substitute Fage plain greek yogurt for the heavy cream. Has anyone tried "fluffing" greek yogurt with xanthan gum? It contains whey & casein, right? Tips/observations welcome. Thanks.

How does Fitbit charge HR calculate calories burned?
I've searched Fitbit forums, and people ask this question, but the answers are vague and don't answer the question. The answers say it starts with BMR. Ok, so the formula is BMR+something. Does anyone know the formula? The default stride is wrong for me. It underestimated my mileage. When I log exercise (vs the automatic…

Finally, a cleanse that fits my lifestyle
Four Texans pledged to eat nothing but tacos for one month. It's the inspiration for a book now available called The Taco Cleanse: The Tortilla-Based Diet Proven to Change Your Life. Why tacos? They're "nature's perfect food," an author of the book told CultureMap. Margaritas are very much a part of the meal plan, notes…

online burn calculator accuracy
Online calculators are notoriously inaccurate, or so I read. Two questions about that: 1) Is the inaccuracy a function of body comp? I.e., are they more/less accurate for someone with more/less BF%? 2) For people who have HR activity trackers, what is the magnitude of the discrepancy (online calculator vs. HR tracker) for…

Protein powder (whey) shelf life
My whole foods brand whey concentrate/isolate blend has a "best before" date that's in 2 years. Once the can is open, though, how long before it starts to go bad (taste or otherwise)? I use it infrequently on low dietary protein days and even more infrequently in some baked goods.
