Calories burned jumping up and down vs jumping rope
I started jumping rope a few days ago. I'm a beginner so it will take time for me to get the hang of it as well as build stamina. The number of calories burned jumping rope are impressive. My question is: will one burn the same amount of calories jumping up and down as jumping rope? I will have to do this the best I can…

Family doesn't support weight loss
I've been trying very hard to work on my goal of losing more body fat but I am in conflict with what my family has to say about it all the time. I have lost about 40 lbs since I started losing weight back in February-March and am happy with that, but I have not reached my goal yet. I do not know exactly what weight that is…

Calories for bulking
I have read many posts as well as other sources and the advice seems to be all over the place. I'm 5'11" and 162 lbs. I don't have much lean mass on me and have a little bit of body fat on my stomach and love handles. I was losing weight up until I made the decision to bulk. I think it would be more effective for me to…

Calorie burn for elliptical at different resistances
I regularly use the elliptical for cardio at my gym. I notice that the machine says that I will burn more calories when using a higher resistance setting, 1-20. Naturally, when you use the machine at higher resistance, you pedal much slower. I pedal at 40 rpm versus 65 with no resistance. Do you still burn calories at the…

Calorie estimate of gym cardio machines
I have read that the calorie estimates that gym machines give out such as ellipticals, treadmills, stairmasters, and bikes are largely inaccurate. However, my situation is such that I go to the gym 3 times a week for strength training and cardio 4-6 times a week. I am trying to lose fat. Is there a certain way not to have…

Extra weight showing up on the scale
I weighed myself the other day and saw that my weight was 163.0. I was happy that I had lost some weight. This morning I weighed myself and the weight was 163.4. I was expecting a decrease. Now I know that weight can fluctuate depending on certain factors. What could this increase be due to? I am definitely in a deficit…

Strength training in a calorie deficit
Does strength training have an impact on the way you look while doing it during a calorie deficit? Do people look more muscular while cutting for whatever reason? I'm aware of the reasons to strength training while in a deficit - retaining lean body mass in particular. But besides this, are there aesthetic changes that…

Elliptical trainer method to burn the most calories
Based on your experience, what settings on the elliptical (be it preset or manual) produce the most calorie burn per unit of time? This can include changes in resistance, speed, and incline. Thanks! it would be useful know

Using the elliptical trainer to mimic running
Hello, I recently sustained a foot injury (extensor tendonitis) and I've been told to not run (smart idea) or do any activity that involves landing on my injured foot to hard. Walking, biking, cross training, and the elliptical are ok. The thing is that I was training for a 5K before this happened and don't want to lose my…

Using an aerobic step deck
Does using an aerobic step deck count as walking cardio? I have a Fitbit and it counts the steps that I perform on it. I was wondering if you can use it to reach step goals or simply as a walking device. Thanks

How much sodium causes water retention/weight?
This morning I noticed the scale was up and have determined it is due to water retention from eating a lot of sodium lately. I want to know for myself how much sodium would not cause water retention. Perhaps I can change my daily sodium goal so as not to have my weight readings be affected by excessive sodium intake.…

Success eating back Fitbit calories
I've been using Fitbit more these past few weeks and I have enjoyed having calories available from exercise. Has anyone lost weight eating back the adjustment the Fitbit gives? I am set to lose 1lb/week and was not eating back these calories before but this weekend I ate more. I am just wondering how it's worked out for…

Jumping rope
Does anyone jump rope as part of their exercise plan? I looked it up in the exercise diary for MFP and saw the estimated number of calories being burned. Are these figures accurate? Thanks

accuracy of fitbit exercise calories
hey all, I use a fitbit like many other people here to track how many calories I am burning a day. I like how it sync's up with MFP to let you know how many calories you've burned. I think that tracking how many steps you take provides a fairly good estimate of how much you're burning, whether it is through activity or…

heart rate monitors and exercise calories
I know the topic has been discussed and I did do a search but could not find an exact answer. For those who use a heart rate monitor, how accurate has it been for knowing how many calories you are burning from any type of exercise? Meaning, if you ate your calories burned from exercise back, have you met your goals? I have…

calorie deficit from exercise/cardio alone
i've been wondering this for quite some time now and want to know how others have done. if you don't eat back your exercise calories and eat around maintenance, have you lost fat? if so, what was your exercise routine like and how many calories were you burning?
-
eating at maintenance and exercise
Has anyone had success with weight loss by eating their maintenance calories and creating a calorie deficit through exercise? How much did you exercise and what was your routine like? The reason I ask is that I tend to have less control over my calorie intake than other dieters and thus it is higher overall (due to social…

success eating back exercise calories later in the week?
I know that there are a lot of discussions on this forum about "eating back" your exercise calories, but most of them deal with a day to day basis. In my situation, I would like to not eat them back during the weekdays and have them available to enjoy myself more on the weekends with food. Since it is all about a calorie…

banking calories during the week from exercise
I was wondering if anyone does this. I have certain days every now and then when I cannot accurately count or log my food intake (buffets, get togethers, bbq, parties, etc). If I burn say 500 calories per workout every day, then would I have enough calories to not let those cheat meals affect my weight loss progress?

Saving up exercise calories
I am in a situation right now where I cannot accurately count my calories every now and then. This is due to family get togethers and dinners/lunches etc. The rest of the time however I stick to my calorie goal just fine. I also exercise almost daily and get a measure of how many calories I burn from my heart rate monitor.…

Help! I need advice on losing weight! :)
Hi fellow MFPers, I am having a bit of a problem that I need some tips/advice on. I have lost 30 lbs since January and since April I have been logging what I've been eating every day. The problem is that I've stalled on my weight loss and it's due to not being able to account for how much I am eating at times. It is…

Question about calorie deficit and exercise calories
Hello, This might sound silly but if someone does not eat back their exercise calories after one week, does the total number of calories not eaten carry into the next week and keep adding up? For example, you burn 800 calories every day exercising: 800*7=5600 calories not eaten back yet and then you keep doing this. Thanks

What happens when you run a 1000+ calorie deficit per day?
Besides muscle/lbm loss? I know that you can lose up to 2 lbs per week up to 1000 calories per day. But what about the remainder when you exceed that? Those calories would still go towards performing something right? If your metabolism is effected, how much and how long would these conditions need to exist so that it…
