Things to add to tuna and avocado
So I mixed up some fresh avocado into my tuna instead of mayo today. It's pretty good but is a little on the bland side. Any suggestions on what else I can mix in to make it a little more flavorful? Ideally, it would be something that's easy to portion out and keeps well.

Any benefit to "recomp" vs constant deficit?
So I'm within about 7 pounds of my goal. I'm currently about 12.8% body fat and my goal is to get to around 10 and then maintain it for a few months before starting a slow bulk in the fall. I currently run a deficit of around 375-400 calories a day, every day. I lift 3 days a week and generally do something active every…

Dietary potassium
I've been doing a little reading about potassium lately. It seems most of us don't get the RDA of potassium. I read some scary things about potassium deficiency etc. OK, maybe I should see if I can work a little more into my diet. Then I checked my bloodwork from 2008 and 2011. K levels are dead center of the recommended…

Maybe you don't need to lift.
Here's some data I've compiled from Redsoxie's experience with MFP and a Fitbit this year: Caliper measurements: Between 4/16 and 4/28, caliper-measured body fat went from 29.7% to 27.3%. Fat mass decreased 3.5 lbs and lean mass increased 2.5 lbs. Overall weight decreased 1 pound. Actual caliper measurement decreased 4mm…

Need body fat caliper recommendation
I just broke my second set of plastic calipers in a few weeks. I guess it's time to invest in a higher quality pair. I don't want to spend a ton of money but I'll spend what I need for something that won't break every two weeks. Any recommendations?

Fitbit+lifting+protein=....
I wear a Fitbit all day. I eat around 400 calories less than it says I burn in any given day. I eat 1 gram of protein per pound of LBM and about 0.35 grams of fat per pound of body mass. I lift weights 3 times a week and play tennis or racquetball ~2 times a week. The rest of the time I'm pretty much sitting around on a…

Rows, and row alternatives
I started lifting sometime in 2010 with Starting Strength. I did bent-over rows as part of the program. I remember them being tough on my back and legs, especially since I was doing them after deads or squats. In 2011 I had some injuries and developed some back problems. I'm healed up and lifting again on a 5/3/1 big but…

Turkey breast
Do people really eat this stuff? I bought a package of turkey breast filets. They cost about 30% more than chicken breast. I thought, hey, nice change of pace, a little more protein per ounce, etc. Turkey is good right? So I put a little olive oil on one, sprinkled on some Mrs. Dash, and tossed it in the oven like I would…

List all the pills you take daily
Include dosage. I'll start. Fish oil (1400mg; 950 mg EPA+DHA) Vitamin D3 (1000 IU) Equate Men's multivitamin Ibuprofen (2x200mg a few times a day) Caffeine (1/2 of a 200mg pill) I think that's it. Total of maybe 10 pills in a typical day.

Why does my weight drop after I eat more?
Twice in the past 1.5 months or so, my weight has dropped significantly in the days after an increase in calorie consumption. It then levels off or increases. I normally eat TDEE - 500. I don't recall having experienced this during weight loss before, but I may not have been paying attention. I'm trying to understand why…

New York style pizza: calories?
I'm trying to decide how many calories a typical big slice of NY style pizza has. There are a million entries in the MFP database. Does anyone have any good ideas, maybe some nutrition info published by a place that makes it?

This is what junk food does to your body.
Taco Bell and McDonald's 4,5 times a week. Microwave frozen stuff for breakfast and lunch just about every day. Subway all the time. Eating out once or twice a week. Cholesterol went from 240 to 204; HDL went from 40 to 59, and triglycerides from 92 to 72. My blood pressure was borderline high then, and now it's normally…

There's a reason "fat burners" that work are banned.
This is a "there are no magic pills" post. People always ask about this or that "fat burning" or "metabolism boosting" pill or supplement. Whether it's cayenne or green tea or whatever, the answer is always the same: "they don't work, focus on calorie control and exercise." But I want to point out one thing. There are…

How is an HRM supposed to work?
I want to preface this by saying I am a very scientifically literate person, so I'm not looking for some basic explanation. How well does heart rate actually correlate to oxygen consumed in untrained individuals? I can understand that if you're already well-trained, your cardiovascular system has reached peak or near-peak…

Lose 28
There are 29 days left in the month. I figure that at an average TDEE of 2400 calories a day I can hit a 2400 calorie deficit and lose 20 lbs by the end of the month. It's not anorexia, it's just a practical weight loss plan. Who's with me?? 3/2 - 159.5 3/9 - 3/16 - 3/23 - 3/31 - (edit: Title is supposed to be "Lose 20 lbs…

What's with the "don't ever go below BMR" stuff?
Don't people have rest days? TDEE - 20% or TDEE - 500 can often go a bit below BMR, but common wisdom on MFP seems to be that on any day you go below BMR your metabolism will crash and your hormones will be wrecked. Where's the reasoning behind this? BMR isn't a magical number - it's just what your TDEE would be if you…

Unrealistic weight loss goals
I want to make a general comment. People, unrealistic goals aren't "super" or "great motivation." 50 pounds in 3 months - unless you're morbidly obese - doesn't make you a superhero. It makes you an idiot. Setting unrealistic weight loss goals does no one any good. It sets you up for either abject failure, which is…

Losing weight by eating dirty
Does this describe anyone else? Today, I had a microwave breakfast sandwich with a scoop of protein powder; for lunch, a bowl of chili and a Fiber One bar; for a snack, a McChicken and another scoop of protein; for dinner, a few tacos from Taco Bell. Hit all my calorie goals. Drank a ton of diet soda, and a ton of water…
