pain relief advice please
I did my usual 5x5 yesterday which included some one arm rows, I didn't engage my back properly, did some too loose & strained my left scapula a bit, enough pain to make you sit up & notice but not where you think you've done much damage. then I had to collect a parcel from a delivery centre, turned out to be a solid…

Deadlift: Sumo Vs. Traditional
The title pretty much sums it up. What makes one better than the other. I watch a lot of YouTube videos trying to perfect the form of my compound lifts. I am noticing a lot of people have switched to sumo dead lifts. I am primarily referencing Johnny Candito, but I see lots of others doing them in their training as well.…

Proper form and technique sources
Anyone want to share some sites or sources of proper lifting technique instruction? I found this one http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/training/benching-with-the-pecs.html very helpful. I've probably made more progress in the last month using this technique than I did in the six months of lifting before that. (thanks for…

SL 5x5ers, what are you doing...
1) in between SL workouts? (cardio/other) 2) for accessory lifts, if any? 3) What are your goals? Just curious to see what other people are doing! My answers: 1) occasional running, only 5k 1x/2x week, depending on how tired i am from the previous day's SL workout... 2) on Workout B day, I am doing dumbell sidebends…

Not strengthening smaller muscles w/ 5/3/1? Causing headaches? (Discussion wanted)
Hi everyone. I used the 5/3/1 program for 9+ months last year but stopped when I started getting really bad tension headaches. When I went to physical therapy, she told me I had too many small supporting muscles that were weak and that was part of my headache. Do you think there is any validity to this idea? (The physical…

Advice please
Hi, After many weeks following this group, I thought I'd chime in and ask for some direction. Firstly, a bit of background - I lost 25kg after the birth of my youngest (now almost 6 yrs). This was achieved by exercising for the first time in my life and also an increased awareness of my diet and intake. I reached goal…

Dumb dumbbell question
Hi all, I'm Erin and I'm new here. I posted this question on the Fitness section of the forums, but I figured I'd ask you knowledgeable people here: I want to do a progressive lifting program (like SL5x5 or SS) but I don't have a barbell (yet - fingers crossed for Christmas). I DO, however, have dumbbells (yaaaay) and they…

Advice for this Beginner please!
I've been reading this forum for several weeks and am really impressed by how helpful the discussions are here. I wanted to finally go ahead and ask some questions, in the hopes that some links or pointers would be possible from people with time for it. I'll try to be thorough without being too long, but that's a bit of a…

Skinny fat, F 34 and looking to build some muscle
Hi, So I've been walking an hr a day at 4mph for months and months, but I just started lifting at home with dumbbells (full body routine) and a few machines at work 3x a week. I'm working in the 8-12 rep where 12 is pretty damn difficult. I've been maintaining my weight at 1700 cals (I think). I think if I cut some cardio…

Maintaining strength/fitness while traveling?
I do StrongLifts 5x5 and Krav Maga. I have a 3 week trip in January, 1 week in Bali, Indonesia and 2 weeks in Chongquing, China. The hotels might have gyms, but from my experience they will be terrible, and I doubt I'll be able to get passes to any local gyms without speaking the language. I also don't want to run outside…

Respond to my damn thread, thread.
Hey! So in addition to simply falling behind, we're also having some issues adapting to the new forum structure and the combination of the two basically means we suck at replying to group threads. Let this temporarily be the place where you link your thread that we've failed to reply to. Do not troll this thread please.…

Injured, now what???
Looking for any advice as to what I can do!! I have a right knee injury, "runners knee" that ironically I injured not running, which I can still do, but doing squats! So pretty much any lower body exercises are out, other than I can do stiff-legged dead lifts without pain. Squats/lunges bother my knee so those are out. Any…

Of dumbbells and muscle imbalances
So, I read that dumbbells are a great way to address muscle imbalances - just do a couple extra reps per set on your weaker side. But that doesn't seem to quite ring true when considered in conjunction with what we know about rep ranges. I mean, if I'm doing 8 reps on my right side, and 12 on my left, I'm surely working…

Weight loss and recovery
Hello helpful people, I am a 5'6 lady who joined mfp in January at about 390lb and pretty much a heart attack waiting to happen. I started eating better and exercise and have fallen in love with lifting. I also do cardio (like dance aerobics) a few times a week cause I love that too. It all went well for a while, I dropped…

Online bodyfat %age calculators.
Just get better - according to the basic "fat2Fit" bodyfat calculator I have 18.2%bf, whereas the millitary bodyfat percentage calculation puts me at -10.4% (yes, minus!)...how does that happen? I haven't bothered with Covert-Bailey yet.... :D

Female wanting to bulk
I've read in this group that females should be at least 20-24% body fat before bulking. I really want to bulk, and people tell me I'm too skinny, however when I look in the mirror I'm not sure if my body fat is low enough. Need opinions. Should I bulk now or keep cutting? I'm 5'8, 140 lbs, 31 y/o female.

Strength Training - The Basics
So, I thought I would do a thread on the basics of strength training. It is not intended to be comprehensive, nor is it intended to imply that one form of exercise is better than another. It is purely intended to help those get familiar with the basic concepts and terminology of strength training. What is strength…

What if I can't squat because of bad form?
I've been doing SL for 6 months and although I never stopped doing squats I feel like I haven't mastered the form because once in a while I hurt my back. After a lot of reading I realize I need to work on my hip and ankles flexibility, I think that's what's stopping me since when I hit parallel my body moves forward too…

When to bump calories during bulk
My bulk/cut schedule has been thrown off a lot due to spending 2 months in Thailand away from the iron and needing to drop my weight a lot. I am just now starting to get back to where the weights are relatively difficult, but I'm not failing yet Program: Stronglifts Calories: 2100 + exercise calories (from experience this…

Rack Pulls
I am unfamiliar with rack pulls...have never attempted them. Are they easier than deadlifts...as in, is one capable of moving much more weight rather than pulling from the floor? What is the benefit?

Help nutrition for competition
Hello I am competing for the first time on dec14. Everything is going well training wise. I am happy with my lifts. I have been gaining weight - usually I am 109 and lately 112 or 111. That's ok but I would like to compete under 114 . I am not good at losing weight. So should I try to maintain or try to cut a little for…

Help with Bulking
I want to start bulking during the winter. Preferably, I would like to do a "clean" bulk. Not looking to get huge, but I want to put on a minimum of 2-3 lbs of lean mass by the end of February. My ultimate goal is to do a bulk/cut over the next year or so to increase muscle definition and reduce body fat. Here are my stats…

"Yeah but I lost X lbs doing this..."
I noted someone at work was eating a salad and drinking their protein. So I asked why not just eat the protein in the form of...oh I don't know...real food? Chicken, meat, eggs...anything but some drink. "Well...I've lost 9lb so far doing it this way." The day before they had gone hog-wild at a luncheon and were counting…

Lifting program suggestions
I've been doing SL for a few months now; started as 5x5 and dropped to 3x5 because of both time constraints and it just got to be too much with the load increases. I have definitely gotten stronger, but then I get really hungry and end up blowing my calorie deficit which defeats the purpose. I've gotten bored with the…

Body Fat Maintenance?
This group was recommended to me via this post on another discussion board. Looks like great support here! I changed my calorie intake to maintenance about 4 months ago. In that time I've started weight lifting (3 months ago) and increased my cardio from what I was doing (1 month ago). Good news: I'm maintaining my weight…
