• Have done quite a bit of both, at home and in studios. Pilates to me is almost more of a strength training exercise and it will definitely help tighten up your core, your muscles will feel it the next day. Yoga is a whole mind/body experience to me, much more all involving, working on all parts of your body plus helping to…
• Well, I hate to be the one to point this out...since no one else is...men are idiots. Seriously, my husband and I will have our 10 year anniversary next month, have been together almost 12 years. He still stares at the girls whenever I walk out of the shower naked or wear a low cut top...like someone else said, men…
• Quinoa is actually a seed..., classified as a grain like seed (whatever the heck that means....). It is similar in texture to rice IMO, I always toast mine before using it. Take a box, throw it in a dry pan and move it around over medium heat until it smells nice and toasty. Its one of the few "grains" that is complete…
• Not only do I agree, the final statement made me laugh out loud. People should know if you throw out very opinionated definitive statements, you are bound to catch some flack. I think people are forgetting to look at the big nutrition picture here, you read though alot of the OP statements and it reads…
• Have to agree with the other posters. I had an inexpensive Timex (with a chest strap) that I used for the better part of a year and swore by, helped me lose 20+ pounds. It started acting hinky, so I bit the bullet and purchased a more expensive Polar model with a few more bells and whistles, and was shocked at the…
•
sounds like you just need to wake up
Gee Whiz...thanks for that blinding insight:grumble: and helping to point out that I am NOT a morning person. I have been running about a year and a half I would say, so not new at it, but I am not a real hard core runner. A 5 K is the most I have ever done,…
• Wow, thanks for all the fast responses..keep 'em coming! I don't feel hungry at all before a run, I just feel my energy level is so low some mornings that I think I am trying to run on fumes and need some gas in the tank...I will have to experiment I suppose, but keep the great suggestions coming please!
• Have you given any thought to working with eating disorders? Your background along with an interest in nutrition would make you perfect for that area, you might be able to get additional certification in counseling directed towards eating disorders and not have to give up all the work you have done towards your masters.…
• The last comment made me giggle....I am 5'8" and right now at 160, I fluctuate between 155-160, in a sz 12 usually (could fit into some 10's but like the above poster said...). I have gotten lower on the scale, the 145-150 ish range, and I always come back up to the 155-160 range:grumble: I have been athletic…
• I am often going above my "max heart rate". I used to do a high intensity interval class one time a week and was bouncing above my max off and on throughout the class. I go above during some runs too. If you aren't feeling bad, lightheaded etc..why back off? Working at a higher level will help make you stronger!
• I make my husband breakfast burritos that he eats almost daily. Scramble a dozen eggs, add a cup to a cup and a half salsa, some diced jalapeno's, beans, sausage..anything you like. Roll it up in some low fat tortillas, will ususally make ~14 or so burritos which I wrap in foil individually and freeze. Take one out in the…
• May have to make these this afternoon! Bump.
• I don't think you will find much scientific evidence that "cravings" before your period are legit, but I know it happens to me. I generally eat healthfully, breakfast is always a good combo of protein, fat and fiber...cravings still happen. I have a Mirena IUD, so I haven't had an actuall period in close to 3 years. I…
• Agreed. And can someone tell me exactly what specialized training and education a "nutrition counselor" has?
• Well, as the wife of a recently retired army guy, who was also a recruiter for a while, I agree with the poster who said run, pushups and sit-ups are going to help. Watching hubby take 20+ years of PT tests, I swear that is all he ever did, run, pushups and sit-ups. And that is mostly what he would work on with new…
• Please take your daughter to a dietitian (dietitian, not nutritionist, if you are not sure, ask). Ask your pediatrician, he or she can get a referral to send you. A pediatric dietitian would be ideal, but most any dietitian is going to be able to give you the info you are looking for and help you out. Unless your daughter…
• Yay! Congrats! BTW, profile pic is possibly the cutest thing ever...besides my son of course!
• Natural does not equal healthy all of the time. Last time I checked, arsenic was natural. Just cause its natural, doesn't mean you want it in your body. Vit C, Zinc a little caffiene..yes, the other stuff, no. Caved.
• Specific HRM show calories burned, not all of them do - they should specify it. Found mine online at Amazon on sale for $40, its a Timex and works great. And once you are past your weight loss goal, they are nice to have to make sure you are working hard enough, like Portia said. I still use mine even if I'm not watching…
• I think I can answer both the questions about the messed up cycles and the copper vs Mirena IUD. I have a Mirena now, had the copper IUD before having my son. I know even after having the copper IUD removed, it took 2 or 3 months for me to get a "normal" cycle back again. I would think it would be totally normal to have a…
• In the US, 'nutritionist' is an unregulated term. Meaning anyone on this site could start calling themselves a nutritionist and be perfectly legal. A Registered Dietitian is a regulated term, meaning you can only call yourself a Registered Dietitian, or RD, if you have a 4 year bachelors degree in a specific area, ususally…
• The double stroller is a good idea, if you already have a single stroller, try and find a baby carrier for the 8 month old. My son was carried in a front pack, a Moby, until he was 12 monhts and too long. I switched to a hiking pack I found online for $15, which was a total steal. I like the hiking pack for 2 reasons,,,one…
• I have found most veggies, even ones I have disliked in the past, are really good roasted. Brussel sprouts have never been a favorite of mine, until I tossed them in some olive oil, kosher salt, pepper and garlic and threw in the oven for about 45 min at a high temp, like 400-425 degreee. This technique works with most…
• Nothing wrong with honey, just sugar in a different form.
• Good post, I can't help but think of the hydroxycut commercial with the MD is plugging the product and how much it has changed his life. Then you read the small print and see the MD is a first year resident..ok technically a MD, but your not really allowed to practice medicine yet...not a real doctor yet in my book. So…
• Muscle is what burns calories for us, that is why strength training to build muscle is so good when you are trying to lose weight. More muscle, more calories burned all the time, from sitting on the couch to running. So doing anything that potentially makes you lose some of that muscle when trying to lose weight, is…
• Not commenting on the cleanse, other than Banks is right, the colon does not store pounds of excess for long periods of time, trust me you would know if it did - you would be ill and in a GI office. But to comment on the nutritionist part, in the US nutritionist is a unregulated title. So anyone on this site could start…
• Congrats! Quite a journey! What is working so far for me is cutiing back slightly on exercise, used to go 7 days a week, now 5 days and upping calories slightly. Used to stay under 1700, now I go as far up as to 2000 based on how much activity I have done. So no exercise days, I am trying to keep it around 1700-1800, big…
• I am not a tea person in general, but Celestial Seasonings makes a green tea with mandarin orange. Put a drizzle of honey in it and it is nummy - mine is decaff so I can have it before bed and not be up until all hours. Not replacing my coffee, but still nummy!
• You HAD to bring up In and Out??? Cruel, just cruel. Native San Diegan stuck in Kansas.. But in response to your post, I looked at my calories over a week. I aimed for an average of 1700 calories a day, despite what I earned working out, and it worked for me. Somedays I would eat 1400 and others close to 2000,…
