Runners HRM/calorie/watch?
Now that I've started running I'm wondering if I should get a new HRM watch that also records laps. My Polar is just a HR monitor and calorie counter. Is there a watch for runners that does all three (HR, calories, lap timer) that you would recommend? I would prefer a small(er) face since my wrists aren't that big. What…

Bod Pod Body Fat Testing Results
Well, I went and had my body fat tested using the Bod Pod. It was really pretty cool. I had the Bod Pod and a fitness assessment. My home scale with body fat measuring said that I was 36% body fat. I am extremely pleased to report that the scale is not accurate. The Bod Pod measured me at 29% body fat! Yippee!!!! I'm still…

Is this normal?
Every now and then I'll have a day or two in which I just can't seem to do anything. For example, Sunday I did a moderate bike ride. I got home, showered and then slept in my recliner the rest of the day, awaking only a few times, and then slept soundly all night. Got up Sunday and did a really hard ride and then again…

Body Fat % Concerns
Now that I'm getting closer to my intermediate goal weight I've started to think more about body fat percentage. I am concerned about something. A year ago I weighed 180 and was 42% body fat, according to my scale. Currently I weigh 150 and am at 36% body fat. Why am I still so fat? I have been pretty active for the last 5…

Those of you at 1200 cals. a day...
For those of you who are at the 1200 calories per day level, what does your food intake look like for the day? What do you have for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks? I'm finding it very hard to stay at 1200 cals. Having some exercise calories to eat back helps, but on my rest day or days I just can't workout I need to…

Will Protein Shakes Help You Feel Full?
Most days I am not reaching the recommended amount of protein in my diet. I believe MFP only sets it at 15%. I am a bike rider and stress my legs a lot and feel that I should be getting more protein. The problem is that along with protein comes other calories in the form of carbs and and fat. So I'm wondering if I should…

This is what I call success...
...at least it's a start. Yesterday a woman came into the office with her lunch from a fast food place. Normally the smell of a hamburger and french fries would immediately put me into hunger mode. But yesterday the smell of the greasy fries actually made me feel a little queasy. And then last night while watching the…

What are your thoughts on this?
MFP works, don’t get me wrong, but if I don’t exercise every day then some days it is extremely hard to limit myself to the allotted calories, which is now 1200. I am so hungry at that level!! I have looked at some online calorie calculators and found that if I weighed 135 pounds and wanted to maintain that weight I should…

The Thrill Is Gone
I've been tracking calories in and out religiously for four months now. I can tell I'm starting to get burned out. I'm letting my hubby's food choices influence mine on the weekends more and more, but I'm still doing okay during the week. I only hit one plateau that lasted only 2 weeks so I'm still seeing progress but it…

What I Can't Understand....
You know, I can't understand how there are so many people on this site who say they have weight to lose and yet claim that they aren't hungry or can't eat all 1900 calories they are supposed to in one day. How the heck did these folks get overweight in the first place if they can't manage to eat 1900 calories in a day?!? I…

Question for Runners
I have started running recently and have been reading a running magazine. They keep talking about pace. For example, run 2 minutes faster or slower than your race pace, etc. How do you guys do this? How do you know if you are running at a specific pace? Obviously you have to time something...but how do you go about doing…

Acupuncture?
There really isn't a good spot to post this so I thought it would go best under fitness. I've been having low back and sciatica pain in one of my legs for over a decade. Recently I'm having neck, shoulder and arm pain. I've had two MRIs on my back that were negative. I've been going to physical therapy and the arm pain is…

Running Clubs
I have a suggestion for those of you who want to take up running. Check around and see if you have a running club in your area. I had my first group run last night and it was a blast. The people were so friendly and it was fun to run with others. They ran 2 minutes and walked 1 minute in the group I was in. They have…

Did I Jinx Myself?
On March 28th I posted that I had lost 12 pounds. I had been losing slowly but consistently. I haven't lost a single pound since then! No it's not that TOM and I have not put on muscle weight in two weeks. I have logged everything!!! My logs show a calorie deficit of 6820 last week and 2168 for this week so far. Yes, I…

Unclean Eating Club?
Ok, I admit it - I'm lazy when it comes to food. Maybe that will change over time but for now it is the truth. So please, no lectures on processed foods, sodium, etc. I know - it would be better for me if I ate "clean." However, since I won't I was hoping some of you could give me easy things to include in my diet. For…

Stored Glucose
I haven't seen the answer to this question before so here goes. How many calories can/should you consume in one sitting? Or, how many calories can your body store as glucose in muscle (glycogen in liver) before converting and storing the remainder to fat? Or is it dependent on how much the muscles have been depleted of…

I'm hungrier now than I was before

A Nice Surprise...
Well, this morning was my "official" weigh in day. I stepped on the scale and saw a number I haven't seen in many, many years 159!!!! I almost couldn't believe it. I had to step off and re-weigh just to make sure. Yep! I am so happy. I started in January half-heartedly and wasn't seeing any success. Then I found this site…

How do you steam chicken?
I have some chicken tenders in the fridge that I plan on having for dinner tonight and I was thinking about steaming them. How do you do it? Do you just "fry" it in water with a lid on the pan or do you have to put it in a steamer basket? How long does it normally take? Do you season before, after, or during steaming? I…

GWF vs. Polar F6 Accuracy
Ok, I plunked down some big bucks and invested in a GoWear Fit to try to accurately determine the calories I burn in a day. What I got from the device is quite a bit different than what the Exercise database in MFP gives me....but I'm ok with that. So then I start wondering why the big difference. So then I have to go out…

Attention all Polar F11 users...

Can food labels lie?
I'm was looking at some of my food choices trying to figure out some better options when I noticed something. Many evenings I'll cook a whole bag of Birdseye Viola! Three Cheese Chicken. Per the nutrition label it says the whole bag is only 630 calories. Well if a carb is 9 cal. per gram and fat and protein are 4 cal. per…

Bicycling Calories?
I was wondering if anyone out there does any bicycling? I ride between 14-16 mph for about 90 minutes usually. MFP says I burn 1119 calories in that time period. I'm wondering how accurate that is. Does anyone have a HR monitor with calorie counter that can verify that amount at that speed and duration?

Fat not burned until after 90 minutes?!?
This is a quote from the University of Illinois McKinley Health Center web site: "Your body utilizes three sources of energy; carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. They are utilized in that order. Fat is the last energy source your body uses and this doesn't occur until after 90 minutes of exercise. By exercising at a greater…

Heart Rate vs. Talk Test vs. Perceived Exertion
These are just my one-sided observations so please don't be too unkind. What do you use to judge your exertion level during exercise? Let me start by saying that from my observations it seems to me that a LOT of people don't exercise hard enough. For example: I took a "boot camp" style fitness class awhile back and there…

Getting the most out of a workout
My gym opens at 6:00am and so I'm on the treadmill at 6:05. I have been running (if you can call it that) for 35 minutes or so and then go lift weights for about 20 minutes. My question is would I be better off just staying on the treadmill for the extra 20 minutes? Work starts at 8:00 but I like to get there a little…
