Why does weight loss slow down when lifting?
I've read that building muscle is impossible on a calorie deficit (for the average person). So why is it that my weight loss has slowed down since I started lifting? I was losing on average 2lb per week, but the last 2 weeks I've lost 2lbs in total. Is this normal? I'm not losing weight to a deadline that is unacheivable,…

Alternative snacks
What can I eat instead of crisps and biscuits (chips and cookies)? I've got fruit for the sweet cravings, but I can't think of anything that would satisfy those cravings I'm getting. I lost 60lbs last year, but have put 20lbs back on and am struggling to get back on track.

Lifting and soreness
On Monday I did a proper weights workout, squats, deadlifts etc. Yesterday I was very very sore. I was planning on lifting again today. I'm still quite sore on certain movements, but not as bad as yesterday. Should I lift today as planned, or wait till the soreness has completely gone? I'm aware that if I lifted today, it…

Eat ALL the things!
I am really hungry, and I've only just eaten my dinner! I've been hungry all day, the first proper hungry day since I started losing weight. What do you do to cope with hungry days?

Splitting exercise sessions?
I like to do an hour of exercise each day, but I find it very hard to do that hour all in one go. I'm a stay at home mum of six, and I homeschool 4 of them so my days are very busy! Will the benefits of exercise still be effective if I split that hour into 2 or 3 sessions? I primarily want to lose weight and fat. Many…

Halfway through! 41lb down (pic)
This week I crossed the halfway line on my weight loss. I now have lost more weight than there is left to lose! I'm also very close to being slimmer than I've been in my entire adult life! photo by knittyflitty1, on Flickr

Lifting weights while slimming down
I understand that lifting weights gives us good muscle definition, and makes us slimmer. But what's the point in lifting when you still have a large layer of fat over those muscles? I've lost over 40lbs since the end of February, but still have over 30lbs to go. When I look in the mirror I still look pregnant, I have a lot…

Deadlift questions (newbie)
I have a couple of questions about how to perform a deadlift. Firstly, I understand that I need to squat to pick up the barbell, raise to standing then lower the barbell to the floor. When lowering, should I keep my legs straight or go into another squat? Secondly, I don't have access to an Olympic barbell, just standard…

How important are macros?
Most days I'm under my calorie goals, but I'm always over one or other of my macros. This week I seem to be over on my fats, another week it'll be carbs, and I'm nearly always over on my protein. I'm losing weight fairly consistently, though it's slowed down lately. Are macros important? Or am I ok to carry on as I am? I…

The camera doesn't lie?
Over the last 2 months, my weight loss has slowed down a bit. These two pics were taken a month apart. On the left, May 18th. On the right, today. I've been getting frustrated with a perceived lack of progress, but this pic proves me wrong! My boobs have disappeared and the shirt is hanging off me!! by knittyflitty1, on…

Ideas needed for a non-gym workout
I need some ideas. I’m staying with my mum for a few days next week and will have no access to the gym. I need some ideas for no equipment cardio that I can do in a really small space (my mum’s place is tiny). Eating healthy will be enough of a problem, I can’t not exercise too! Help?

Changing things up?
I've read you should change up your fitness routine every now and again. How could I do do that at the gym? Currently I do an hour of cardio (20/20/20 on elliptical/treadmill/bike) 5 days a week, strength training (NROLFW stage 1) 3 days a week. Recently my weight loss has slowed down and I'd like to give it a bit of a…

How can I reduce carbs?
I'm a carb lover. Bread, pasta and rice used to be staples of my diet. I have reduced their intake since starting my weight loss, but id like to try reducing further, to hit the 40/30/30 ratio. But I'm clueless about how to do it! I'd like to carry on eating fruit, it makes me feel good, despite the high carb content! My…

Hungry day
I'm having a hungry day. I'm doing my best to choose healthy foods, but I know I will be way over my calorie goal at bed time. I was way under a couple of days ago, and I'll be doing an intense workout on Saturday, so do you think it will even out in the end?

Pre-workout breakfast?
So, I'm planning an intense workout tomorrow morning, weights and cardio. Full body including isolation and compound lifting, and at least an hour cardio. My question is, what should I eat for breakfast to maximise performance, and how far in advance?

Building upper body strength
I have lost 32lb since the end of February with dietary changes and cardio exercise. I have around 50lb to go till my goal weight, though I'm more focused on body size than weight. In the last 3 weeks I have introduced some weight training, but my upper body strength is non existent. I struggle with 2 kilo dumbells for…

Planks
I struggle to hold a plank for more than 10 seconds, and I'm not getting any better. I have almost no upper body strength and when I'm in the plank position, it's my arms that give way. I rest on my forearms, with my elbows under my shoulders, and I'm on my toes, not knees. I've had someone check that my body is in a…

13 weeks, 27lb (pic)
I hope you can see the difference! I started at 220lbs, am currently 193lb. Goal is 136lb. Still a long way to go, but I'm happy so far! Untitled by knittyflitty1, on Flickr

TDEE and activity levels
I exercise around 6 days per week. But for the rest of the time I am extremely sedentary. I'm trying to work out my TDEE. My goal is weight loss. Should I put sedentary and eat back my exercise calories, or choose lightly active?

How to stay motivated?
I started my weight loss in February 2012. I've lost 26lb so far and I'm really pleased with myself. I still have 45-60lb to go (depending on how I look and feel when I get there!) and some of the initial weight loss buzz is wearing off. I'm trying not to look at how far I have to go, but I'm wondering how to keep myself…

What to eat?
I'm meeting my estranged daughter tomorrow. We're going to McDonalds, her choice. It's going to be a tense time, so I'm trying to prepare now. I'm working beforehand, so won't have time to eat before I get there (it will be my lunch hour). What can I choose to eat and drink that won't ruin my hard work?

Stupid question: Dumbell weights
Ive bought myself some light dumbells so I can start strength training. I've seen the advice about lifting heavy, but I am 60lbs overweight and very unfit so am starting light. My question is when I track the exercises I do, what weight do I put down? If each dumbell is 5lb, do I list it as 5lb or 10lb as I'm lifting 2 at…

10 weeks, 21lb
I still have a long long way to go, but I've lost a quarter of what I need to, so thought a progress pic might spur me on! I'm 5'7", SW 220lb, CW 199lb, GW 136lb Untitled by knittyflitty1, on Flickr

Injured :(
Last week I tried a new podcast for my C25k, where you are supposed to step to the beat of the music. I found the jogging part too slow for me (previously I had been jogging too fast), and by the time I did my fourth run (I'm on week 1) my knee was really hurting. I haven't done it since, keeping active by riding on my…

Optimum heart rate for cardio?
I want to get fit and use exercise to help me lose weight. I've lost 21lb over 10 weeks through diet, and have been exercising for 2 weeks now. I have a HRM, and on sites I've looked at, it says I should work at 60% - 80% of my maximum heart rate. What does this mean in practice? What happens if my heart rate is lower or…

C25k newbie, can't finish day 1!
Hi there, I'm hoping to get some encouragement. I started c25k last week. One day one, I managed 2.5 of the 8 runs. Day 2 I did 3, amd on day 3 I did 4, plus kept moving for the full 30 minutes. I rode my exercise bike at a moderate pace for 30 minutes Saturday and Sunday, and today I did 4 one minute runs and kept walking…
