question about assisted pull up machine
Hi - I have been playing around with the assisted pull up machine (because I am nowhere near able to do a pull on on my own - yet). I'm so confused! It has weights in 10 pound increments and you can choose how much weight you want assisted. Right now I weigh about 140. I set it up to 105 pounds and couldn't pull myself up.…

favorite brand of jeans?
So - as a tall gal, I have a hard time finding jeans that fit me. Generally they're too short - or they're OK but I can't wear them with ANY sort of a heel. I'm 5'11 and need a 36" inseam - 37 is better - size 4-6 or 28 depending on the brand. My favorite jeans are Hudson Supermodel, and Joes Jeans (Twiggy). I have a pair…

weight training with broken rib?
(cross posted on Fitness and Exercise board) I'm looking for some weight training advice (understanding that no one here is a doctor - but maybe a trainer?) Here is the back story. I had a good run - I started working out in October of 2013 - mostly lifting weights and working on body recomp. Then, in May of this year I…

weight training advice - haven't worked out since May
I'm looking for some weight training advice (understanding that no one here is a doctor - but maybe a trainer?) Here is the back story. I had a good run - I started working out in October of 2013 - mostly lifting weights and working on body recomp. Then, in May of this year I got whooping cough. It was miserable, I was…

Whooping cough - there is NO silver lining
I caught whooping cough a month ago and am still absolutely miserable. Prior to catching this ridiculous disease I was working out 4 times a week and eating well and feeling great. Now I'm winded walking down the hall, and can't eat more than a few bites at a time, I tried to find a silver lining in this hell. I figured at…

squats - and long femurs...
Hello! So I've been doing squats but have NOT been able to get to parallel without seriously leaning forward. That wouldn't be a big problem except I'm using the squat rack and heavy weights and it's beginning to be too much on my back. I did some research last night and found out that if you have long femurs relative to…

Workouts while back is healing?
I injured a muscle in my lower back a week ago. It's finally not excruciating but I can definitely still feel it and it is sensitive. Are there any exercises I can do while I'm healing? Any weight training that I can do that won't hinder the healing process? I hate sitting around!

How quickly does muscle loss happen?
I injured my back on Sunday (I have no idea how - just went to sit down and sudden muscle spasms). Went to the doctor on Monday and she said that it seemed to be muscular, gave me muscle relaxers and told me about using ibuprofen, heat and ice. That's all fine and good - but it's Friday and it still hurts to walk around. I…

What is your favorite workout?
I tend to jump around with workouts but I find my three favorites are: Barre classes Pilates Weight training I go for regular walks as well but I love those three workouts (and I've tried a lot - Piloxing, kick boxing, zumba, spinning, boot camp...). I have never looked better than when I was working with a Pilates trainer…

Squats vs. Bulgarian split squats
I would love to get feedback on the difference in benefits of squats vs Bulgarian split squats/rear foot elevated split squats. I like both - just want to know if anyone prefers one over the other and why.

my weight training "duh!" moment.
I've been on these boards for a while now and have been paying a lot of attention to the heavy lifting information as I have recently (three months ago) started a lifting program. This may be completely obvious to most of you and it probably should have been to me, but here it is... I was complaining to my husband the…

Increasing bench press weight
I'm having a hard time increasing my bench press weight (and come to thing of it, overhead press weight too). I've been consistently going up in weight in my squats and deadlifts and am slowly coming up in bicep/tricep weight but the bench press eludes me. I start with a warm up with just the bar - 10 reps. Then I add 10…

Need lifting partner - how do I find one?
Hi, I've recently (in the last few months) been focusing on lifting and I'm trying to lift as heavy as possible. However, I think I might be able to progress faster if I had a lifting partner so he/she could spot me when I try a heavier weight. As it is, More than once I have had to dump the barbell on my chest and roll it…

weight training and travel - lots of travel
I'm wondering if anyone is doing a good job of staying on top of their weight training program while traveling? Next week I will be starting a long series (several months) of travel for work. The majority of the travel is outside the US, hopping from country to country, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how I will…

don't need to lose weight but really need help!
Hi Sara and SideSteel, I will apologize ahead of time, this may be long. I'm so confused about workouts that will help me meet my goal of body recomposition. You can see my photos in my profile. Currently I'm 5'10.5" and weigh 140. Waist - 27", hips - 37". Chest is 36". My goal is to lower my body fat. I don't care if I…

Darn Panera girl lied!
I went to Panera bread and wanted some soup. They didn't have the kind I liked so I asked for something that didn't have cream (I was at the drive through so couldn't look at the menu descriptions). She said the tomato soup had no cream and was vegetarian so I chose that. After I ate it I went to log it and it's CREAMY…

Squat help
OK - so I'm hoping some of you experts can help me out. I've been doing squats, but I have a really really hard time getting down to parallel without leaning forward a ridiculous amount. I did some reading and looking at videos and asking around at the gym and apparently I've got one of two problems (or both). Very…

So what happens after "newbie gains"?
Hi! I've been reading the forum and I've gotten great advice and information on putting together a weight training program. As I've been reading, I've come across the term "newbie gains" several times. From what I understand, if you're not eating above your TDEE and you are weight training, you can gain some muscle…

Barre class today - highly recommend
Hi! I'm going to my Barre class today and, for those of you that haven't tried it, I highly recommend finding one near you! There are so many versions - Pure Barre, The Barre Method, Ballet Bootie Barre, Burn at the Barre - you get the idea. Anyhow, after three weeks of Barre classes and weight training I have lost 1/2 an…

I've gotten set up on a great weight training program and am having a lot of fun with it. I would love to see pictures of women in my age range that have been…

How often do you take your measurements?
I used to weigh myself once a week but am doing a lot more lifting now and sometimes it freaks me out if the scale doesn't show downward progress... So I've decided to ignore the scale and focus on my measurements. About how often do you measure yourself? I was thinking every two weeks but doesn't seem like much time to…

Skinny fat - would love some help!
Hi! I'm hoping there are some people on here who might be able to help me. I'm what you would call "skinny fat". I'm 5'11 and weigh approximately 140 pounds (give or take a pound or two on any given day). I wear a size 4-6 depending on the brand and look fine in clothing. However, everything under those clothes is very…

How to track a barre class?
I'm taking a "burn at the barre" class. Obviously it's not in the exercise list - how would you track it for your workouts? I looked at yoga but it's more rigorous than that. And calisthenics but I'm not sure it's as rigorous than jumping jacks, etc. Thoughts??
