Winter Running - Etiquette, Advice & Recommendations.
A recent conversation with some folks from my running club made me think it would be good to start a thread about winter running. Here are some thoughts to get thing started. Visibility: Always wear reflective clothing when running at night. I know black looks cool but I'd rather look like a radio-active lemon than get hit…

Would you XXXX with the person above you?
A game about games... there are so many of these "would you XXXX the person above" games on MFP.. lets see if we can think of a few more (fill in the XXXX): Would you drink tea with the person above you?

BEST MFP GAME EVER: One-Upmanship
As its Monday and I'm in a bit of a Monday mood I thought I'd post something to cheer everyone up. So - this is a new game I've invented called 'One-Upmanship' The rules are pretty simple: whatever the person above you posted you have to say how you did it a little bit better. For example if I said I got my hair cut today"…

Diet and Exercise - Made up words
Based on a silly response I wrote to a post about the definition of Jogging - I have a new game. Its very simple, you just make up one or more words which you feel fit a gap in the diet and exercise vocabulary. .... My previous post

Boston Marathon Bombings
This has upset me more than any other act of terrorism (assuming that's what it is) because its an attack on everything I think is good about humanity. Roger Robinson from Runners world sums up much better than I ever could. "Marathon running is a sport of goodwill. It's the only sport in the world where if a competitor…

End of the world food....
I watched 'Seeking a friend for the end of the world' at the weekend (Great film) - and it got me thinking - if you found out the world was going to end in three weeks - how would it affect your health and fitness regime?. Honestly - I can't work out if I would start binging on food and alcohol, or if I would stubbornly…

How to get fit and loose weight without being an *kitten*.
Its occurred to me, probably because of the number of times it was pointed out, that during the process of loosing weight and getting fit its quite easy to appear to become a bit pompous... So - I'm going to admit to some of my mistakes and hopefully that will help you avoid them - please feel free to add to the list!…

Reflecting on 2012 and Goals for 2013
I don't have any resolutions but I do have a couple of goals: Weight: This time last year I was on maintenance (164lb) today I'm at 168lb which isn't bad but I want to get down to 161lb by March - I chose a slightly lower maintenance because whilst 164 is definitely not over weight it doesn't come with a 6 pack either...…

Winter Training Programs for Runners & Cyclists
Summer is over - There is very little light in the evenings now and at the weekends there is a pretty good chance it will be cold and wet - which means that either you risk life and limb continuing your regular summer schedule or you change your training pattern. Here is my before and after plan. (For those that know I…

Calories burned running: is speed a factor at all?
Yesterday I did a the following running training session: 2 miles warm up @ 9 minute miles 3 miles @ 7 minute miles 1 mile cool down @ 9 minute miles So I logged my calories burned follows (based on MFP calc): 27 minutes at 9mm: 377 cals 21 minutes at 7mm: 373 cals In other words - speed has virtually no impact on the…

Runners - A hydration & nutrition reminder
I'm working in Moscow this week and don't have any of my usual gear with me - No drinks bottle, sports drink, gels, clif bars etc. I went out on a 15 mile run this morning without even eating breakfast - just a glass of water! By half way it was like I was swimming in treacle. I stopped and bought water (Thank goodness I…

FACTS: Good & Bad Sugars & Carbohydrates
I read in another post someone arguing that all sugars are the same chemically, and that therefore there is no such thing as good and bad sugar. I was pretty sure this was wrong so I did a bit of research. Firstly - these are the different sugar types defined (Wikipedia): Monosaccharides Glucose, fructose and galactose are…

South Downs Half/Full trail Marathon June 9th
Anyone else racing this? If so - I hope to see you there ;) I'm doing the half because (you may select my reasoning from below) a) I'm a wimp b) I'm not stupid c) This is a fun event for me rather than a competitive one - so it would be nice to be able to walk afterwards d) I couldn't afford the entry fee e) I promised my…

My 7lb gain and what I'm going to do about it
I'm really annoyed with myself - I completed Brighton Marathon mid April weighing (pre race) 162 lb - my maintenance weight. Today (May 28th) I weighed in at 169.2 lb. Now, before anyone else makes excuses for me - I know weight fluctuates, and that I am comparing my lowest weigh with a random weigh in: so I probably only…

My first Marathon
Today I completed the Brighton Marathon in 3:42:56. It was my first ever marathon and the first time I have run over 21 miles. My plan was to run a steady 8:30 and come in at 3:45, but to allow myself some leeway depending on how I was feeling. It started off really well - at the 13.1 (half way) mark I was at 1:48 minutes…

Food that makes you gassy?
Over the last couple of years I have found myself increasingly uncomfortably through gas and trapped wind. I thought that weight loss would help with this but I am the same now as I was before I started my journey. This is particularly frustrating if it happens when I am running - especially racing - its painful when…

Running Injury ALMOST NAKED PICTURE
So, today I ran along the beach in Tel Aviv... and at one point tried to dodge between a young chilld on a push bike and a small palm tree. LOOK WHAT THE TREE DID TO MY ARM!!!! And stop looking at my pants. Perves.

ALMOST NAKED PICTURES - A debriefing
Yesterday I ran into a tree dodging a child whilst out running and gave myself a large but not at all serious scratch on my arm. I though this was quite funny and posted a picture of myself in my underwear sporting my 'Injury' under the title "Running Injury ALMOST NAKED PICTURE"…

Training the day after a (very) long run
Yesterday I ran 20.5 miles - today I feel pretty good but I have a slight discomfort around my left knee joint, and pretty tired around my thighs. I'm thinking of doing weights tonight and then 15-20 minutes or so of running or elliptical just to loosen my legs up - good idea or likely to cause injury?

Perfect long distance running technique
I just found this on you tube... It summarises everything I have learnt about good technique in two and a half minutes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx6x2cD6Y8Q&feature=related Its worth watching several times and then on your next long run mentally play back the video, making sure you have each bit right. Repeat about…
