Food that makes you gassy?

Over the last couple of years I have found myself increasingly uncomfortably through gas and trapped wind. I thought that weight loss would help with this but I am the same now as I was before I started my journey.

This is particularly frustrating if it happens when I am running - especially racing - its painful when trapped and embarrassing when released.

So, I think its time I did some experimentation with my diet to see if I can improve the situation. I'm looking for suggestions as to how I might approach this.

Things I know cause issues include onions and garlic (Which I LOVE) - but even eliminating this completely doesn't remove the issue.

On the obvious test list is milk products and gluten - any other suggestions?

    Beans and raw or undercooked onions are a surefire trigger for me, as are diet drinks.

    Broccoli, and also dried prunes. Someone told me those would be good for other things, but it wasn't worth it! Also, some cereals that have fiber? Forget it!

    If you're going on an elimination diet, dairy and gluten are pretty big ones. I'd try wiping out one first (for 1-2 weeks) first, before trying the other.

    With either, it may just be the amounts. I can tolerate low amounts of both.

    Oh caffeine was another big one for me, that includes soft drinks and coffee.

    I've been stuck under the IBS bracket, had all the tests, but suffer the same as you plus diahorrea & constipation. It's better when I look after myself more and eat cleaner. The big ones for me were dairy, gluten and caffiene. Cutting out processed food hasn't hurt either.

    carbohydrates (starches and sugars) are what ferment in the gut and cause excessive gas (and yes even fiber). It could also be a lack of beneficial bacteria (a high fiber diet will destroy beneficial bacteria).

    I suffered my whole life from IBS, flatulence, bloat, pain, intestinal muscle spasms, constipation. When I went Primal it all went away.

    I get my carbs through cooked veggies and occasional berries, nuts and seeds. That's it. My main macronutrient is fat.

    I'm pretty much fuelled by caffeine.. not sure if I can actually live without it...

    It makes sense that fermenting starches and sugars are what causes the gas. But then why would onions be a definite trigger? I'm going to have to do some serious experimentation!

    Hi there,

    I was the same. It actually was so painful, and it happened so often that I opted not to eat out in restaurants for fear that the pain and discomfort, which was chronic, would become unbearable.

    After many tests and exams, visits to many specialist, my family doctor came up with a suggestion. Stop eating meat, slow down on carbs and sugars and add a good quality probiotic to my daily routine, 3 months at a time (3 months on, 3 months off). I stopped eating meat (still eat fish and seafood- this wasn't very hard because I wasn't into it anyways. Not for everyone but good for me). Because of the slow digestion process, in my case, it would sit there and create very painful trapped gas from fermemtation and too much candida in my intestines. it's all related ;-) Look it up if you have a chance. Candida overgrowth.

    It's been over a year and I would say that I am 85% better. I still have occasional pains but not nearly as often as I used to. I've lost weight and feel great! LOL... Now on to losing and shaping up a little more!

    I can not eat uncooked cabbage- not only gas but serious cramping too. Any fiber added stuff- like the fiber one bars or cereals. Again major cramping. And then dumplings (which I LOVE) Fiance hates it when I eat those. :laugh:

    Definately broccoli, oatmeal, and milk. I eat them anyway though.

    I eat a diet high in beans, greens, brussel sprouts, cabbage and onions. Sometimes they make me gassy, other times they don't. Root vegetables and nuts don't ever seem to make me gassy.

    But the worst for me is beef steak! It does nasty things in my gut. The fattier it is, the worse the symptoms.

    It looks like you run outside, which is a good thing for expelling gas. However, I don't and the people next to me on the treadmills are not appreciative.

    I notice it with high fiber foods like a salad or beans. I got Beano to help with that and to take before eating those types of foods but it doesnt really seem to help too much. Im looking for a good digestive enzyme to help with digesting these veggies and beans so the gas can stop! Also Im making sure to take a probiotic that is supposed to help with gas and bloating. We will see if it helps!
