Muscle strain/tear...what to do?
I have finally admitted it today...I strained my quad muscles, both legs. I did a Zombie Mud Run 1 week ago, and the constant break-into-a-sprint to get around the zombies did me in. I haven't been able to run all week. I think I've probably re-strained both muscles maybe 3 more times this week just doing mundane things,…

Finished my 1st Mud Run - with zombies!
The Zombie Mud Run did take place Saturday in NJ despite the cold & the biting wind & the sleet. Okay, so it wasn't *actually* sleet. But it felt like it. I think it was 50F when my heat started. The Zombie 911 Response Team (3 in my team) made it over the mud mounds, through the water-filled graves, over the wood…

I saved a life last night...
I've been a volunteer on my town's first aid squad for 11 years now. 95% of what we respond to is Class A bull$hit. Probably only 5% really needs an ambulance, and of that, probably only 1 or 2 people are truly going to die. Those are the calls that really need me. The ones that won't make it without me. Those are the…

Question re weight loss surgery and attitudes...
I was at a barbeque last week at a friend's house. While chatting away with a few people I just met, one of the women mentioned she had lost 76 lbs. I congratulated her and told her that she had lost an amazing amount of weight, and she looked great for it and must feel awesome too. I told her it was quite a coincidence to…

Need help setting a reasonable goal...
Okay, yes, it's true...I have never set a time-based weight loss goal. When I started out, my goal was to lose 104 lbs, going from 234 lbs to a final goal of 130 lbs. But I didn't put any time constraints on it. (Good thing because I was delayed by a car accident with a spinal injury and subsequent spinal surgery.) At this…

Store for running shoes in Ocean County, NJ...
I need to replace my running shoes soon and I want a really good pair that are recommended and fitted by a running store. Are there any in Ocean County, NJ? I guess I can venture out to Cape May/Atlantic/Burlington/Monmouth counties. I have an issue with my right foot...if I tie the shoe for running like I would for any…

Met my running inspiration yesterday...made her cry...
For years, I had seen a woman running in my town. She parked her car in a school parking lot right near my house, and I saw her run for hours and hours. It was watching her that planted the seed in me...that I could do this weight loss thing...that I could be a runner. I've wanted to catch her to say hello for quite some…

How do you say goodbye?
How do you say goodbye to your Dad, the man who has been there your entire life? Well, I'll tell you, cause I just did it. You go to him, to the shell of a body that was once so strong and capable of ANYTHING. You go to the man who taught you how to make a fire in the fireplace, to the man who probably got whiplash when he…

Belly button piercing today!
I just decided now & I can't wait! I had it done many many years ago, but I let it close up when I gained the weight. I just entered the final 20 lbs of my weight loss today, so I'm gonna frickin' do this! I'm so excited!

I'm finally up for it: getting back in the dating game.
It's been a long time. I divorced in 2005. Since then, I haven't really dated, except for 2 dinners about 2 years ago when I wasn't really ready. I was so uncomfortable with myself...how could I let anybody in? But with 81 lbs down now and only 23 to go, I feel ready! So I've got a date on Wednesday. Looking forward to it!

I'd like to incorporate lifting into my exercise routine...
I've been running, but would like to add lifting to my exercise routine. I don't, however, have a gym membership, and cannot afford one (in both money & time). Is it possible to include some type of lifting? Would an investment in dumbbells be sufficient? How would I formulate a lifting program?

Interesting...diet vs. exercise for weight loss...
I've read many times that diet is more significant to weight loss than exercise, but never quite "got it." I had it, however, slam me in the face the other day. I recently found a button on my HRM that tells me I have burned around 75,000 calories in exercise since I started losing weight. So that's 21-ish lbs. I've lost…

Please stop. Or start. Not sure which.
Recently, I had a week without losing anything. I ate exactly what I always eat and exercised like I always exercise, yet nothing happened. The only thing to look at is ME. And YOU need to look at YOU. So whatever you did...stop it. Or what you didn't do...hurry up and do it.

Do my HR numbers during workouts sound okay?
I run, but I still consider myself a relatively new runner. I weigh 160 lbs. I've lost 74 lbs and have 30 more to go. I'm 47 years old, so my max HR is 220 minus 47, or 173. When I run, I am at about 150 - 155 for the majority of the run, or 88%. When I hit 165 (95%), I am very winded. Is this too much for me? I'm already…

Runners' help...recovering from pneumonia...
A little background...I'm a 47 year old gal, 72 lbs into my weight loss, I have 32 lbs to go to reach my goal. I currently weigh 162 lbs. I was sidelined for a year recently following a car accident & spinal surgery to fuse 2 levels in my neck with screws & plates. I was cleared for exercise a few months ago and began the…

My 1st ever before & after pics...68 lbs lost, 36 lbs to go
I have never posted before & afters. I really don't have any before pics, since I didn't allow myself to be photographed when I was so overweight. But I was able to dig one out...below is me, in July 2011, weighing 234 lbs. (This was taken right after I finished a run, btw.) And the reason for posting a pic today is…

Talk to me about tofu...
I just saw a reference in a thread about chili seasoned tofu. Now, I haven't yet ventured into preparing food with tofu, but it's time to start. So talk to me about everything tofu. Where is it in the grocery store? How do I prepare it or season it? What are good things to put it in?

Runners...how do you clean your running shoes?
I ran in the rain yesterday and now the toes of my running shoes (Brooks) are covered with pollen and specks of leaves & some dirt. How do you clean yor running shoes?

I'm having such a hard time getting going again...
I was waylaid by a car accident a year ago and spinal surgery in December. But as of a month ago, I received clearance from my surgeon to get on with exercise. I need to get my butt in gear and start running again, but I just cannot find the *umph* to do it. I work 40 hours a week and volunteer another 20-ish, so time is…

Cleared to exercise following surgery, dreading the start-up
In March 2012, I was rear-ended by a bus. I had been losing weight & eating right & exercising for a year at that point, losing over 50 lbs & running several miles several times a week. Unfortunately, the accident caused 2 disc herniations in my neck & I was unable to get in any decent cardio due to pain. I had surgery in…

1 year of MFP, 45 lbs down, 59 lbs to go
On March 19, 2011, I woke up and realized one thing: I was done. I was, officially, sick and tired of being sick and tired. Up until that point, I was depressed, I was beaten down, I was demoralized, I was shamed & shameful, I was weakened, I was ineffectual, I was paralyzed, I was dejected & despondent & unable/unwilling…

Oh, my back. Ow ow ow ow oweee, what have I done?
I injured my lower back (a little) about 2 months ago or so. I was lifting a patient and used really bad body mechanics, but I had not much choice - he was having chest pain and was severely short of breath, so I had to do what I had to do. I've been paying for it ever since. Since then, i've applied heat. Lot of heat. It…

Best McDonald's options....
My daughter's school is having a fundraiser tonight at McDonald's. I'll be taking her down there in about 20 minutes. I don't *have* to have McDonald's, but if there are any decent options, I'll do it. Are there any?

Recipe for fresh cranberries?
I bought some fresh cranberries because I love fresh fruit and thought these would be interesting to try. OMG they are horrible! Does anyone have a recipe that I can use for these? Eating they raw is NOT an option. :noway:

Yikes, how to tactfully cancel a date?
So I signed up for an online dating thing and emailed with a gentleman several times. He asked if I'd like to meet for a drink and I said sure. So I took his number and told him I'd call to set up the details (it is to be tonight). I called last night, and we firmed everything up. I'm thinking this would be a 5 or 10 (max)…

How should I label myself?
I took the plunge and made a profile on a dating website. I haven't dated (except once) since my divorce in 2005. I don't want to have to wait until I lose more, so I'm going to start now. It's hard to "classify" my profile, because I'm in such flux with the weight loss. To read my profile, I'm an exercise nut. To look at…

I just won a 3 month membership to Curves!
I'm tickled pink right now! We had our township Pirates Day this past Saturday. I do volunteer EMS and right across from our building was a booth for Curves. I went over and talked to them for a bit about what they offer. They were having a drawing for a 4 month free membership, so I put my name in, not thinking anything…

How do you tally up your marinade?
How do you add caloric value with marinade? I marinade mostly with Yoshida's sauce (from Costco) or with Italian dressing. Most of the marinade goes down the drain though...so does marinade add very little in calories to meat?
