Treat TB with kindness
Hi, I've been binge eating for many years, and pop into this group occasionally. I recently read about and tried a new approach that has been working for me (so far !), and I wanted to share it. What about thinking of TB as a manifestation of the pain that you're carrying from other parts of your life. A part of you that's…

TotalDetermination's journal
Hi, Well the username says it all ! I was really determined to lose the weight and now I'm just as determined to keep it off. I've lost over 80 pounds from my highest ever weight (60 pounds of which was lost using MFP), and have been in maintenance for over 6 months. I found that regular updates on this thread -…

What is the scientifically correct way to measure calories burned when exercising ?
This is just a hypothetical question because Im interested in the science (I don't plan to actually use these numbers to calculate how many calories to eat). I'm just wondering what is a better way to calculate the calories burned during exercise. Is it based on the results achieved or your heart rate. For example, if 2…

I want to look and feel fabulous
I feel a bit melodramatic writing this because its not really all that bad. But for me, its a rough period. My roommate was given a box of chocolates and told me I could have some. I had one, then two, then...more than half the box. I was so embarrassed that I bought the same box to replace it. while I was out buying the…

How long does it take you to eat a meal?
This is a slight variation on a question I posted here (http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10313588/how-long-does-it-take-you-to-eat-a-meal). I am wondering how long it takes you to eat a meal, and am particularly interested in hearing from people who have difficulty gaining weight (not someone who is on a…

How long does it take you to eat a meal?
I had 400cals worth of porridge for breakfast (made with milk). I happened to notice the time on a clock before and after eating and it took me 7 minutes to eat the entire bowl. It seems awfully fast. I'm not in a hurry to do anything today, and I wasn't planning on timing myself so I think that is a pretty typical eating…

fat*9 + carbs*4 + Protein*4 doesn't equal calorie total ??
https://www.ryvita.co.uk/products/crispbread/multigrain-crispbread#nutrition carbs - 56 fat - 7.2 protein - 11.2 calories - 370 (4x56) + (4x11.2) + (9x7.2) = 224 + 44.8 + 64.8 = 333.6 that's 10% off. Am I doing something wrong?

A simple technique to control food cravings

Share your story about beating a binge urge
Many of us struggle with binging. The urge to binge is strong, and overcoming it is a real achievement. This post is to celebrate our victories over 'The Binge', and focus on the times that we manage to overcome the urge. Knowing that you can do it once can give you strength and confidence that you can do it again. It can…

Calories in a chicken leg quarter
Hi, I just bought a chicken leg quarter. It weighs 340g / 12oz (raw). with the bones and the skin. The pack says 158 cal per 100g. This means it is 537 calories for the quarter. Does this sound reasonable ? Most sites quote a chicken quarter at 100 to 200 calories less than that. I'm just wondering if the calories listed…

not the usual question about calories...
OK, so generally speaking: calories in < calories out leads to fat loss calories in > calories out leads to fat gain (I've read many threads discussing this point...but that's not what I'm questioning) the body needs a certain amount of proteins, fats, carbs (as well as other things) to function optimally, with…

losing weight slowly to avoid loose skin
I have heard that it is best to lose weight slowly in order to avoid loose skin. I just want to clarify what that means. Suppose I have 100 lbs to lose(I don't - this is just an example). I could lose it in 1 1/2 years and then spend 3 1/2 years in maintenance. or I could lose it more slowly over 3 years and then spend 2…

skipping breakfast
Are there any health implications of not eating breakfast ? I'm not talking about weight loss. I understand calories in, calories out - as long as I eat at a deficit I'll lose weight. I am assuming that I will be able to keep to my calories and lose weight. If I was to eat the same food but just start eating after midday,…

Calories burned staying warm
Does the body burn a significant amount of calories heating itself up ? ie If I turned down the heating (and didn't put on extra clothing) would it make any difference to weight loss ? (I expect the number is tiny, but I'm just curious.)

What is the right type of diet for you ?
For people who struggle to lose weight, the article below suggests understanding your eating habits, and then choosing a diet which makes it easier for you to maintain a calorie deficit. This is not questioning calories in vs. calories out, or saying one diet is better than other. Rather it is about helping people find a…

Throwing food away
I am very careful with what I buy to avoid food wastage as much as possible. I don't feel comfortable throwing food away. Not just for financial reason but also for ethical reasons. I have bought something (for the first time) and I don't really like the taste of. It is a pack of four. I've eaten one. I really don't want…

Ethics Question..
You see your best friend's partner coming out of a hotel room with someone else (ie not your best friend). Its very obvious something has gone on between them - they're all over each other even as they leave the room. They didn't see you. Do you say anything to anyone about it ? What if it was your sibling / parent or…

different types of protein
Hi, I was wondering if there are different types of protein and whether some are better than others ? For example if I get half of my protein from protein bars / shakes is that ok ? Thanks
