Anything wrong with using different weights for each arm?
I've been switching some of my arm exercises from machines to dumbbells. My left arm is much weaker than my right, some of which is natural but some is from an industrial accident as a teenager. Doing exercises such as bicep curls, I have noticed that my right arm easily handles weights I struggle with using my left arm.…

OHP and lower back pain
I've been following the Starting Strength beginner program for the past 4 months and one lift that always bothers me is the OHP. I am trying to follow Rippetoe's form as described and shown in drawings and pictures in the book, and also in YouTube videos. For whatever reason I always get back aches during my working sets.…

What is going on (physiologically)
To start I'll say that I absolutely want thoughts as to what is going on physiologically, but I also would like help! I've tried to answer all of your questions in the sticky! Thanks in advance! The problem: I've been at this since January and lost 13lbs (yay!) but for the last 6 weeks I have lost 0lbs and 2" from my waist…

Bored & fizzling out. What now?
Can't explain it well, but here goes. 43 F 5'8" CW 224 Goal 170 Love SL But I'm bored with it. Want to see more upper body changes other than strength. Scared to pick something else because don't want to lose SL strength. Too ignorant to find a good plan for what I want. Considering ICF 5x5, but still feel it will be…

Can't eat above 1200 calories
I started off with 1200 calories and not only did it make me sick, but i was suggested by MANY to up them. I decided to try out 1500 calories (even though I know i can eat more than that for weight loss) but no matter what I do, I can't seem to eat more than 1200. Ever since eating that low and cutting out Bread/Wheat from…

I'm new to the group - have questions
Hi All, I'm new to this group and have gone through most of the stickies and must reads (as well as the questioning my intake sticky). So here's my story. Background: Overweight since 9 years old. Always in sports, and when not in sports, I've worked out in some way, shape, or form. I'm 35 Feb 2012 - April 2013: Lost 34…

How do I tell if I need to lose weight or just recomp?
Quick background: was very active as a child, in fact was slightly underweight when I first left home (5'8" and 120 lb). Cooking for myself quickly changed that and I eventually got up to 220 lb and stayed there for close to a decade. Over the last 2 years I have got down to 155 lb simply by changing what I eat -- I…

Different calorie data on one food item...confused
So I bought this yogurt and just wanted to log it as my snack for tomorrow afternoon. Then I saw that the package has two different calorie and macro stats, and now I'm confused. It's a German brand so there's the data printed on it by the manufacturer. Since I live in Finland, there's also a sticker on it which has the…

Bow flex or homemade power rack with bar and bench?
Due to a deal with my husband, I am getting some new equipment. I had showed him the plans and specs for the power rack and mentioned getting a bar and a sturdier bench. And he was fine with that. But, he found a bwflex revolution, used, for $1000 and asked if I wanted that. I am leaning towards the rack, but which would…

Recomp/heavy lifting - general advice!
Uh hello SideSteel, Sarauk2sf, and everyone else  So I've almost reached my goal weight and have found myself at the 'skinny fat' stage. I doubt losing another 2 lbs will change that so I've decided to try and work on recomp/muscle gain (I'm not sure what you're supposed to call it? But I want the dreaded muscle…

Determining calories needed
I recall that a few years ago I used a formula to determine the calories that I needed. As I recall, there were about 3 different methods to determine your daily caloric need. I believe got these formulas in a magazine published by AFAA. But for the life of me, I can't find that article. Can anyone help? Michele

nutrient timing and muscle loss
I know that nutrient timing is often overstated in terms of muscle gain, but what about in terms of muscle loss? Specifically, do fasted workouts increase the chances for muscle loss? And does the conversation change when talking about strength training vs cardio, and high intensity cardio vs low intensity cardio?

Realistic weight and BF goals/plan?
Hi there, I've been on MFP for almost a month now. I was looking for some opinion on whether I have set realistic goals. I am male 6'1", currently 220 lbs and 32% bodyfat. My goal is by 4 months to: * achieve a weight of 187 lbs (lose 2lbs a week) * achieve 20% body fat (lose 2-3% BF per month) * maintain my current LBM…

Can't Retain Bicep Strength?
I have Graves Disease. Had 2 years of untreated severe hyperthyroidism, left me with extreme muscle wasting, and basically started with zero strength in January of this year. I do SL, as well as Body weight resistance and Cardio. My problem is all my lifting is either increasing in weight or sets/reps, EXCEPT for Bicep…

Low-intensity core workouts
Hi all! I've got a slightly unusual situation and I'd love to hear some input. I had laparoscopic abdominal surgery about a month ago (I had appendicitis, fortunately I'm fine now). My surgeon told me not to lift anything over 10 pounds for 6-8 weeks post-surgery. So right now I'm doing my usual cardio and working on upper…

Bulletproof coffee
Since there's about 15 posts about this on the main forums I thought I'd provide you with this: http://www.precisionnutrition.com/bulletproof-coffee Alan Aragon also did a nice review on this in AARR and he also guest featured Dr Spencer Nadolsky for him to report his findings. I personally don't see the idea of drinking…

Lifting routine advice?
There are six lifts I love doing: Squat, Deadlift, Bench Press, Pendlay Row, Overhead Press, and Snatch. And I love going heavy with these. Frequently getting into 1 to 3 rep max range (actually following a Wendler style progression). Recently I've been doing one of these per day, with 4 follow-up/supporting lifts. But I…

Ankle mobility
At the beginning of the year I sprained my left ankle while jogging at night. It has since healed, but I lack the mobility that I once had with it. It is mostly noticeable when I try to squat. Prior to the ankle injury, I was comfortably squatting with my feet at a roughly 30 degree angle. I cannot do that now and have to…

Numb hand/arm while squatting
Sometimes when I have the bar on my back for squats, my left hand gets numb. This happens most often when I lift while my neck and traps are tense or sore. If I am loose in those areas, this does not happen. The feeling is similar to what happens when I have a pinched nerve in my neck. Any insights? Any preventative…

Thyroid concern?

Dumbbell clean and press - question on form
Hey there! I posted part of this in the general forum two days ago but didn't get an answer so I'm now hoping to be more successful here. I have a huge imbalance between my left and right side which obviously is an issue with strength training. I know that you should always use the same amount of weight on both sides so I…

OHP form Rippetoe vs Mehdi
I follow Stronglifts 5x5 and have watched his videos numerous times for form. On his OHP he is stiff as a board...there is no movement, he appears to strictly push the bar up. Which is what I have been doing. Tightening up glutes, legs, back (core) and pushing the bar up... then I see this video from rippetoe…

full body training
http://ditillo2.blogspot.com.au/2009/01/full-body-workouts-cs-sloan.html Good read about the merits of full body training. I have used full body training for the majority of my time lifting. For a brief period I was doing 3 days a week with one day for squats, one for bench and one for deadlifts but as I progressed I found…

Squat set up help (non urgent)
Yesterday I ended a 6 month weight lifting hiatus. I remember one of my greatest struggles last summer with my first run of SL5x5 was wrist and elbow pain (more so elbow).
