  • Good to see you here, doc. A year ago, I was diagnosed with type 2. My A1c at that time was 12.5, and fasting BG was 288. Thanks to a ketogenic type diet, the results of my last physical showed A1c is now 5.2 and my fasting BG is consistently between 79 and 85. Lipid profile has improved drastically as well.
  • It will take some time to get things under control. When I was diagnosed with T2 eleven months ago, my fasting BG was 280 and my A1c a whopping 12.5. The first week after starting keto, my typical morning FBG was down to around 140-160. Within a month, it was down to 85-95, which is about where it is now. Every once in a…
  • I am absolutely convinced it's an addiction. For me, cutting carbs back to nothing produced similar feelings of anxiety and physical withdrawal that I went through when I quit smoking. My wife has also said the same thing. Over the last 10 months, the craving for carbs has also waned. The cravings are still there, but the…
  • Haven't checked ketones in more than six months. Just stick to the plan and save yourself a whole lot of money.
  • Just curious. Where did you read this? And what is the science behind it? I'm not doubting you, but it would be nice to know the source. There seems to be a lot of "I read this" and "I heard that" statements surrounding ketogenic diets, and this is one I've never heard before.
  • 40mg is what I took for about 2 years (I found out later that they aren't supposed to prescribe that high of dosage for more than a few months). Simply cutting way back on the calories and carbs is all I did. Honestly, it was that simple. Shortly after I went keto, my Omeprazole prescription ran out. Since I hadn't had any…
  • I canned a bunch of pickled beets last year, but ended up not being able to eat them due to the sugar that was one of the ingredients used. Guess what? A lot of friends and family got pickled beets for the holidays. :D
  • Most of us with diabetes are trying to prevent degenerative problems. What I'm failing to understand is why her doctor feels the need to put her on metformin with borderline numbers. That by itself makes no sense.
  • Two thoughts here. First, it's important to understand that while A1c is sometimes described as a snapshot of the previous 3-4 months of blood glucose activity, the fact is that it's heavily weighted toward only the previous two weeks. So if your BG has been even somewhat higher over the past few weeks, it will influence…
  • I had bad GERD for several years and at first did the baking soda trick before bed every night. It wasn't always effective, though. As it got progressively worse, the only treatment I used that was 100% effective was Omeprazole (a PPI - I was on the strongest dose) but that has its own risks and didn't address the root…
  • I own several pH meters. I would be happy to test a glass of salt water, if you don't believe me. ;) Look, I appreciate that you are trying to be helpful. But when you tell people that salting your food makes it more alkaline, that's simply not true (unless that salt contains other trace elements that act as a buffer, such…
  • Well... not exactly. It depends on the type of salt you are talking about. If you're talking about table salt, then no. Table salt is neutral (composed of the anion of a strong acid and the cation of a strong base). On the other hand, an alkali salt, such as sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) will raise the alkalinity of…
  • I can only speak from my own experience. In 10 months my wife and I have lost a combined 120 lbs. I am a Type 2 diabetic, and now my blood glucose is normal. I no longer test as a diabetic and can pass any test. Although my cholesterol went up slightly for a time after starting, my total cholesterol is now down overall…
  • Kipper snacks are canned smoked herrings. My favorite way to serve them is for breakfast over a bed of spinach, with a poached egg on top.
  • Never been a big fan of sardines, but I love those smoked kipper snacks. I think the nutrition is about the same.
  • I had my blood drawn last Friday as well, and got back results this morning. I'm not a total carnivore like you, but I do keep carbs down to under 20g and am somewhat higher on the protein (95-110) compared to others. Honestly, I don't pay much attention to fat. I eat a lot of it, and have no fear of doing so. Below are…
  • I'm Steve, age 54. My wife and I started on keto last year after I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Even though I was way overweight, I was initially less concerned about weight loss than just getting my blood glucose levels back to a normal range. My wife also joined me at the time, mostly out of convenience, so that…
  • I check my BG several times a day and I can tell you that I do get higher readings the day after a good meat binge. However, it's important to keep in mind that everyone is different and much has to do with your activity level. If you're lifting regularly, you have higher protein requirements than someone who is…
  • I agree completely with KetoGirl. I've been doing this for almost 8 months now (down about 70 pounds) and the only macro that's an absolute goal is protein. Stay under your carb limit, and eat fat until satiated. I find that the more fat I eat, the slower the weight loss. I try to stay between 60 and 75% fat, but I don't…
  • Big "nay" for me. I prefer plain coffee with heavy cream.
  • Understand that some of us on MFP are diabetic. So yeah, "high carbs" are something not all of us can handle. You eat your way. Others will eat theirs. The last thing any of us need is food police.
  • I generally just stay as low as I can. Many days I'm under 10.
  • There are people who have been in ketosis for decades. For example, there's Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, who has been on a ketogenic diet since 1969, and is now 80 years old. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_K._Bernstein
  • I drink dry red wine, which typically has 3 or fewer carbs per glass. I have a glass every night and still lose weight without any problem.
  • I love when people try to argue with me that this way of eating... (pick one or more): * will clog my arteries. * cause an early death. * is unsustainable. * results in high cholesterol. * causes kidney damage. The last time this happened was last weekend when a lady (a nurse) at a social function noticed my wife and I had…
  • Keto for now, but maybe something of a slightly more Paleo/Primal flavor once I get to my desired weight. Regardless, I will always be low carb and probably under 50g a day, since I'm diabetic. By the way, regarding Quinoa, it isn't a keto-friendly food in any way, shape, or form. It has 34 net carbs per cup!
  • The sleep issues will eventually sort themselves out. I had the same problem the first month. It was like my body had all of this excess fuel to burn and wasn't about to let sleep get in the way. I would often wake up at 3:00 AM feeling like I had a full night's sleep and ready to go.
  • We had ours last night. Corned beef and cabbage (with kale). My corned beef has no sugar, and the cabbage is cooked in bacon fat.
  • I would also suggest counting total carbs, rather than net. And try to keep them under 20g. At least until you get into ketosis. Once that happens, then you can play around a bit until you figure out what works best for you.
