I use mapmyrun and love it. Never have had any problems, so I've never bothered to try any other ones. And one of my favorite features is that it DOES interrupt your music and tell you how many miles you're at and your pace. So not quite sure why that isn't working for you... Interesting to hear about these other apps…

When I started running I was getting crazy shin splints. I went to New Balance and had my feet measured. Pricey for the shoes and inserts, but totally worth it. I no longer have any problems. Today is actually my one year anniversary of becoming a regular runner. No April Fools joke here! I ran my fastest 5K a couple weeks ago...just under 30 mins. I heard that chewing gum helps with breathing. As for the shin splints, you need to get some shoe inserts and a good pair of running sneaks. Microwave idea sounds good. I normally do that with cookies...hahaha. Especially since I saw someone else say the texture wasn't so great...and that would probably be a turnoff for me.
