  • I will always wear a helmet because it straps my baseball cap down so it won't blow off when I hit 20 mph. :) Why do I wear a ball cap? The brim protects my face from the sun, a more likely danger, I don't want a sun burned nose. Also in rain, my brim keeps my glasses dry, so I can see better. If a car hits me, yeah, a…
  • Thanks. Yes, I have been reading up on nutritional needs and decided to make my own distance food. I parboil potatoes then quarter them and salt them and sprinkle on Kraft Parmesan cheese, then wrap them in tin foil. I think 4 potatoes should work for 100 miles. Plus the clif bar and honey stinger gel packs to add to my…
  • I love riding the roads. Lots of great farming areas around where I live. I bike 4-5 times a week, averaging 36 miles everytime I touch the bike. I am attempting my first century this Saturday, and I have 2 more scheduled for later this year. I started riding in March when I was 205 and am currently at 188. Obviously, wear…
  • Last concert was The Avett Brothers at Nautica Stage in Cleveland. Before that was Paul Simon at Akron U. Saw two great live jazz big band sets, at Andy's Jazz Club in Chicago in February.
  • All these are water sources I count in my water for the day: Water with ice and juice of one lemon. I put one slice in the glass with the cubes and juice the rest. Then when the water is gone and the ice is melted I eat that slice of lemon. Peel and all. No lie.:) Bee Stinger Honey Gold gel pack, for when I ride. After all…
  • Aw man, that was really ignorant. I cringed. That was really....grrr....bording on hateful. I am sorry your MIL is such a doofus. I have received a lot of positive suport from most of my family. My brother asks me frequently how much weight I have lost. Sometimes he'll ask if I am done yet? I chalk it up to he doesn't want…
  • Do some outdoor activities. What are your favorites?
  • In regard to the the soda situation, buy them some Mio perhaps. Once they see that they can make their own water taste good enough to drink, they wont need to buy so much soda. Tell them it will save them money. Parents like to hear that.
  • I am at a loss as to why people complain that their clothes are too loose after they lose weight. Did I pass?
  • Since this is 40 hrs a week, I'd consider just upping the activity level up from lightly active to highly active, (the category that also includes mail carrier), then not log calories from walking at all. Save your money.
  • You can eat anything, but you have to track what your feeding yourself, then exercise more if you need to. A 1/4 of a brownie can still be tracked. A handful of fries can still be estimated. You'll see that it still adds up, to quite a bit. One day, you'll get tired of adding all these little bites and you're brain will…
  • If you've stalled, you may be overestimating your calories burned. Thats ok, its something we all do. I would eat back some of my exercise calories, but not all. And see if that gets you back to losing 2 lb/week. I am currently in a stall myself, with about 5 to 7 lbs left to go. I know I need to incorporate more weight…
  • I saw on TV once (that makes it true!) that the most accurate way to measure Fat% is to be weighed while sitting on a scale in a big pool of water. What I would do with this information? Who knows. Play the lottery, perhaps?
  • If you love cheese, eat it. Just don't eat a lot of it at one time. We eat eat quite a bit of string cheese to keeps the portions small and the cheese fresh. Babybel is also good, or Laughing Cow. Don't give up cheese. Just give up overly processed fake cheese, like chezwhiz, or that powder stuff on doritos that had been…

  • Some veggies are better raw. Some cooked. For instanced, I love steamed carrots, it brings the sweetness out. But I dislike cooked spinach, I'd rather eat that raw. Spinach salads with mushrooms, thinly sliced onions and tomatoes are great. We just have to find the method we enjoy the best for each one. Roasted beets,…
  • I started on the elliptical, then tried running until I hurt my knee (chalked that up to bad form). Then I went to the Cybex Arc Trainer, and now Im just road cycling 35 miles, 4 times a week.
  • They have a spicy eggplant appetizer thats not bad, except for the sodium content.
  • I think we all burn calories at different rates on bikes based on our general level of fitness and how efficient we are when we cycle. Also, the bike we are riding makes a difference. A heart rate monitor can give you a better idea of what you burn on the bike. Currently I use 40 calories per mile. So for 50 miles, I burn…
  • I think its great that you're riding to work, my wife just did this morning, her first time. I disagree with those thay say you need to eat more, its only 12 miles. Just eat your normal breakfast, and that should energize you. Pack lunch and carry water, of course. I bike a lot, and I log anything over 10 miles. I use 30…
  • This. Be blunt. Some people are clueless. You pay for the gym, your time is valuable.
  • If you use an iPod, check out the podrunner podcasts. Its free and it features songs of the proper tempo to work on increasing your cadence incrementally until you're up to speed. Im not crazy about the music, but the tempo is right.
  • Starkist Selects Very Low Sodium Tuna,I drain it and eat it right out of the can. So good.

  • It looks like you drink NO water. Drink some.
  • I hear you on 1 2 and 3 :)
  • A Broadway Show or don't bother coming back.
  • I buy Twin Lab Whey Protein powder in 1 lb envelopes at my local Rite Aid. It's the best solution I can see for traveling with the stuff and not having it spillout all over my work attire. It might not be the best brand available, but its a small sacrifice to be able to take it with me.

  • My current favorite bread is a swiss multi grain made by nature's pride. On rest days, I'll usually go with a toasted bagel thin though for my sandwich.
