  • I've read through your replies and your food diary and candidly, doubt that you are eating more than you're burning. Your weight loss goal is set at 1200. Although there are a couple of days where you exceeded your goal, most of the time you are within 100 calories. Since the 1200 would have included your 500 calorie…
  • I've just this week decided to try this approach. I'm cutting way down on refined carbs and increasing my protien. I hope it helps because nothing has for the last year.
  • I'm 49 and have had various peri-symptoms for a few years now. Night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings. Over the last year my TOM has been erratic, REALLY heavy one month and light the next, skip some occassionally. Most symptoms I've just accepted. But the weight issue is beyond frustrating. A few years ago I…
  • Exactly! Although there are certain medical conditions where a low carb diet is desirable, for the majority of us, it's no more effective than a well-balance, calorie controlled diet. AND it's very hard to maintain.
  • I haven't tried the dvd but I take zumba classes. It's a lot of fun and a great cardio workout. If you do it right it's also a great ab workout. As with all exercise routines you'll get out of it as much as you put into it. I see people in class who never break a sweat and I come out dripping. All about the effort!
  • I think it's a scam. Essentially they are just clothing with strategically placed tight spots. I would bet all of us have worn too tight clothing in the past and got very little benefit from it. Sounds more like a fitness wear version of control top pantyhose.
  • No need to give it up. Just plan it into your day. One thing I did in the beginning was to switch to really good, high quality chocolate and have just one square a day. I used to wrap them individually in foil and keep them in a cookie jar.
  • MFP can will calculate all of this for you when you set up your goals. After you've done that I would suggest you read these links. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/10665-newbies-please-read-me-2nd-edition
  • Wow, I would have thought 6 kids would polish that stuff off pretty quickly. Sounds like freezing might be a good option.
  • Are your children also dealing with weight issues? I ask because you said that your husband is not tempted and your MIL intended these treats for the kids. Why would you thrown them away or make them inaccessible to your children? This seems more like a situation where you need to figure out how to control temptations and…
  • There's no clearly correct answer. In short, for most people without special health or dietary needs all calories are equal in terms of weight loss. Calories in must be less than calories out. So, in theory, you could eat nothing but snickers bars all day and, if you are under calories, you would lose weight. However,…
  • There is a listing for "dancing aerobic ballet modern twist". I just use that. It tends to underestimate a little bit (I use to wear a bodybugg that I've used for comparison" but I think that's ok. How much you burn in an hour is going to depend entirely on how vigorously you are dancing. Two people of the same weight and…
  • Why not eat for BOTH fuel and pleasure. There's nothing wrong with enjoying your food. In fact, I think you end up enjoying it more when you start experimenting with new flavors and healthy options.
  • Only if you want to. After a while you will find that you eat mostly the same things and you'll just be able to judge where you are. You can always check in if you're eating something new (like going out to a new restaurant) that you're not really sure of the calories. You'll also get better at judging portions and at…
  • I haven't given up anything. I don't think there are any forbidden foods. However, I do have many that I eat only now and then, or in much smaller portions.
  • The answer is "it depends". Normally you should eat your exercise calories. However, there are a few things to consider. Most people overestimate how much they burn when they work out. So I would recommend only eating a portion of the exercise calories that you earn. This is under the assumption that when you set up your…
  • Opinions on this subject vary and people will get pretty hot about their point of view. Are diet drinks healthy? No, probably not. Will they hurt your diet? For some people they do. Some people report that having the sweet taste makes them crave more sugar or high calorie foods. Other people tend to over compensate and eat…
  • There is a ton of conflicting advise out there and, in my experience, many of the people who support some kind of special eating plan like low carb or high protien tend to be, well.....zealots. They are not only right they are right at the top of their lungs and the rest of us are doomed to failure for not accepting their…
  • LOL not to mention the assumption that the human body has not evolved in over 200,000 years.
  • Yes, most women do retain water. Not everyone. In the long run it doesnt really matter. For about a week you retain extra water. It is meaninless. You haven't gained fat, you may still be losing fat but it's masked by the water retention. You can minimize it by exercising and drinking more water. I do think we often make…
  • From a weight loss point of view it is not necessary to exercise. Weight loss is primarily a function of a caloric deficit. There are many people who lose weight simply through cutting calories and do not exercise. I don't recommend it. Any time you lose weight you lose some fat and some muscle. Since muscle is more…
  • Please site your source. This is not correct. Carbs are an essential component in a balanced diet. As someone said earlier. Weight loss is really about creating a calorie deficit not about the source of those calories. A healthy balanced diet required protien, carbs, and fat. Anything else is a version of a fad diet.
  • This is a journey. And it is one that will continue for the rest of your life. There will be times when you are excited and motivated and times when you're not. During those times you just need to push through it. No excuses, you just have to force yourself. I understand wanting a friend to help you. It is great having…
  • I think it just depend on how you feel. I had a cold all last week. One day when I tried to work-out my body just flat-out refused. I was ok after a couple days but I seriously couldn't have done a thing prior to that.
  • I've used this same recipe for close to 30 years! It's so simple and really good. The only down side is that I almost always have all the ingredients on hand.
  • I'm sorry you're discouraged but before getting too upset you might want to do a little analysis. First thing to consider. When you first begin a new exercise program it is very common for your muscles to hold onto water for a long period of time until you adjust to your new routine. So, more than likely, you've retained…
  • I don't understand how it can infuriate you that a health insurance company would refuse to ensure someone who is a statistical risk or would charge them a higher premium? That's the way insurance works. There is a pool of money that is created in two ways: 1. from the premiums that the participants pay and 2: from…
  • I would suggest that dinner is what you eat, just more of it. He would probably have a double serving of protien and some whole grain breads. However, he probably needs to add in more snacks. Nuts and cheese make really good snacks and are a bit more high calorie.
  • Ok, here's the reality. Weight loss is 80 percent diet (as in eating less calories than you burn). You can accomplish that in one of three ways: 1. Diet alone. You do not need to exercise to lose weight. If you create a deficit by simply eating less than you burn you can lose weight. 2. You can create a deficit by eating a…
