  • I took a Crossfit class, just one, it's too much for me. My experience there was great, the coach seemed to know what he was doing and everyone there was very supportive and encouraging. I did enjoy the one class I took, but it left me way too sore for over a week. I had to couch myself for several days and I just wasn't…

  • I don't eat Paleo/Primal whatever name you want to use, but I do have a fair amount of bookmarked food blogs that use that style as a draw. I could never ever do it because I love dairy, beer, potatoes, legumes, and bread. I'm not willing to give them up because I wouldn't be happy, therefore that style of eating is not…
  • For the record, this is not exclusive to men. The big lifts dump a lot of testosterone in your bod, and that's the "sexy" hormone for both genders. Just, you know, go with it.
  • I do SL and add in other work when I feel like it. Sometimes I just want to run my miles, do my compounds, and GTFO. Other times I want to fine tune more. I just do whatever extras I'm feeling at the time. A sort of "Hey! I haven't done pushups in a while, let's do a few sets of those!" type thing.
  • Yes. Also look into Starting Strength. It's very similar to Stronglifts 5x5 but it uses a 3x5 system instead and some exercises are different. By the way, the 5x5 and 3x5 are setsxreps.
  • The best exercise is the one that you'll do. If walking is the only thing you can/will do, then that is the absolute best thing for you to do. If you're up for anything, strength training is #1, absolutely. Cardio is important too, but the best thing for a healthy body is heavy weights.
  • I like a piece of fruit about 45 minutes before I run. How's your water intake? For myself, if I'm not hydrated enough, I can't run regardless of how well-carbed I am. I need to make sure my water intake stays high, 8 glasses before I run (though nothing 1.5 hours before hand) as well as 4 while I run. And this is every…
  • It may not be armpit fat, it might be migrated breast tissue from wearing the wrong bra size. I had armpit fat when I was wearing a 32DD. Nothing got rid of it. I switched to a properly fitting 28FF bra and it's gone, nothing else has changed. The right fitting bra will allow your relocated breast tissue to go back where…

  • I dread running and absolutely hate the first 1-1.5 miles of it. Every time, I just wonder why I'm doing it, I hate it, it's uncomfortable, it's tiring, and I'd really rather be lifting weights, eating food, or doing about a million different things. After the first 1-1.5 miles something clicks, my thoughts stop, my body…
  • I'd stick with sugar and just reduce how much you use. For the longest time My coffee had a Tablespoon of sugar and 2 Tablespoons half and half. Over a period of a few weeks I reduced the sugar to 1 teaspoon, though I still usually use 2 Tablespoons of half and half. The first two weeks I used two teaspoons instead of 3 (a…
  • We buy Ezekiel, it's also $5 a loaf for us. I think it tastes great and the convenience factor of not having to make my own (and I do enjoy baking, I just don't want to be responsible for such a staple) offsets the cost of it for our family.
  • Though not "sexy" I really like Gap's gFast line. It's tight and flattering, high waisted (so pants don't fall when running), and moisture wicking. My husband thinks I look fantastic in it and it's completely functional while I'm sweating my face off running or lifting. It is also reasonably priced and can be down right…
  • I think it's great. It's also laying the groundwork of a healthy life for them. Keep on. Our gym has daycare, and what I like about it is that the upper portion of the door is open and looks right into the weight room. So, she sees my husband and me lifting. When we come to get her she gets to do 2 exercises before we…
  • You need a good bra. I'm a 32DD/DDD and the Moving Comfort Maia works well for me: http://www.movingcomfort.com/Maia/350011,default,pd.html I've also recently picked up a couple of Shock Absorber Ultimate Run bras and I like those as well: http://www.shockabsorber.co.uk/products/ultimate-range/ultimate-run-bra/ (these are…
  • I eat in the morning and then workout about 2 hours later. I've tried working out on an empty stomach and I don't have the energy to complete my workout, especially if I'm running that day. That said, lots of people do it.
  • Not necessarily. Read the Kellymom article, everything on that site is top notch.
  • I don't necessarily eat "clean" but I try to keep my diet minimally processed. I just wanted to chime in and second the recommendation of the Michael Pollan books. I really liked "The Omnivore's Dilemma". Basically he followed each of our modern food chains and ate a meal from each. It really highlights the differences…
  • I eat until I'm no longer hungry. Sometimes that involves a clean plate, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it even means seconds! If I have more than a few bites left over of something that'll re-heat relatively well then I save it for later or the next day. My aims may be different than yours though. My calorie goals aren't…
  • I weigh/measure cooked. It's just easier for me to do it that way instead of keeping mine separate from my family's while it's cooking.
  • Whichever one you like the most. It doesn't always have to be which is better, sometimes it can be which do you like more -- especially when talking about several things that have a similar nutritional profile. At the root of it all those cookies are flour, butter, sugar, and maybe eggs depending on your mom's recipes.
  • There are quite a few women lifters at my gym, so I think the guys are used to it. They're very helpful and encouraging unless you're just wasting their space chatting on cellphones or dragging the 5lb weights around when you're not doing dropsets. There are a couple of high school boys that go to my gym. One time one of…
  • For me a heavy weight is anything that requires a large amount of effort to push out 6-8 reps while maintaining proper form. If I can do 8-10 I go up in weight. Actual weight is relative. What's heavy for me may not be heavy for you and vice versa. You just have to experiment with the weights and find what works for you.
  • Whatever I have on hand really. If I'm making it a meal I like to add an egg, some avocado, and sunflower seeds. Yesterday I had a salad of baby greens, tomatoes, red onion, cucumbers, feta, and nectarines. I topped it off with a quick dressing of evoo, balsamic vinegar, and a bit of honey.
  • x2 Weights are a must for me. Skinny is all well and good, but strong will make me live longer and look better naked than skinny will. So, I hit the weights with my husband. Lorina, you look fantastic! Your upper back is my goal!
  • This is a calorie bomb, but it's also cheesecake perfection: http://smittenkitchen.com/2010/04/new-york-cheesecake/ I love this, and I'm probably the biggest cheesecake snob in the universe.
  • Thank you everyone, good to know. I don't make a habit of avoiding any specific foods, but I keep processed foods at a minimum and almost never purchase anything with hydrogenated oils or HFCS. Though sometimes that gas station nacho cheese sings me it's siren song.
  • If you're not hungry, don't eat. I'm with you, I hate breakfast and have to force myself to eat it because I'm not hungry. But if I don't eat within two hours of getting up my energy level is low for the entire day. So unless eating/not eating is going to have the same effect on you then don't worry about it.
  • Yes. I was a C before baby, now I'm a DD/DDD. I'd love to be a C again. Heck I'd take a B or a D too!

  • Unless I have a high fever I run. For me, running also helps clear out all that gunk in my chest when I'm sick. Ty it, if you feel worse you can just stop.
