  • I don't really have pace goals because I'm trying very hard to make it all about the running and not about competition as to how fast I go. I have so much in my life that is about winning and competition that I want running to be my selfish "all about me" thing. This is the first time I'm writing this down: I am going to…

  • AGREED. If I had $200 to spend on Amazon on me (me, me, me!!), I would get a Garmin because I deeply covet one and don't have one. If I already owned one, I would buy more running shoes and some running tights for winter runs.
  • LMAO! That is awesome! I listen to the Another Mother Runner podcast and love their books. They have a t-shirt that says "Still Waiting for my Uterus to Fall Out." LOL I was a runner in my 20s, daily about 5-8 miles or so. Then I stopped running for more than a decade. Like NO running at all. Ugh. I started again with C25K…
  • You probably haven't really been set back weeks though. Once the cold is passed, I bet you'll find that you are back to where you were. Take it easy on yourself when you're sick.
  • I live in Vermont, so right now I'm running in cold temps if I'm outside. I wear a wicking long sleeved top with thumb holes, capris (still hasn't been cold enough to go to tights, but I think that's coming soon), regular shoes and socks, a windbreaker over the top of the wicking long sleeved top, a fleece band that goes…
  • I say no, but the elliptical makes me want to stab myself in the face. Keep running outside or use a treadmill. If the elliptical is all you have use it but be prepared for when you go back outside again in the spring to feel like you are struggling to run.
  • Running is awesome because: I've lost 52 pounds since February (been running since March) and running has been a big part of my weight loss, it keeps me from being crazier than I would normally be (stress relief and anxiety reducing) and it gets me out of my house and into the sunshine or into the gym. It has been…
  • I just rolled my eyes at the original article. I totally admit that part of why I run is to help me in my weight loss efforts, which is at least in some small part about vanity. However, the mental benefits I reap from running are so much more important to me than the physical at this point - I would be insane without it.…
  • I agree with this completely. Once you are in a stable, secure relationship, you often develop other priorities. I got married, had two kids, and I have priorities that don't always allow me to put myself first anymore. When my DH and I were first married, we would go to work and then meet up at the gym afterwards. We were…
  • You guys are awesome! I started a boot camp class at my Zumba gym in February 2013 at 1. I lost over 17 pounds in the first "round" of boot camp (5 weeks x 4 times per week at 5:45 AM). At that point, I started the C25K program, very early in the AM on the local high school track (so no one would see me). I did the program…
  • 11/7: 0.8 hour (running) total 3.8/24 hours
  • Zumba, lifting weights and Body Shred classes.
  • I did weeks 9-14 of the C210K app by Zen Labs. Now I am doing the 10K Finish It plan from the book Train Like a Mother to build my mileage base.
  • I don't log anything as exercise unless it's actual exercise (e.g. cleaning, walking to/from work). For food, I don't log all my iced tea (0 calories) and I usually don't log spices, salt, pepper or gum.
  • Love it! I wish someone had told me that I would be permanently regrowing the skin on my chest below my sports bra. I have no idea why I keep chafing there (different bras, plenty of body glide and other chafing protection - WTF??), but I have a permanent chafe line. Also sometimes you chafe in bizarre places and don't…
  • I second the suggestion of Couch to 5K, though I would actually suggest that you download the C210K app from Zen Labs. Chances are, once you reach the 5K "graduation" you will want to continue anyway, so you might as well just use the app from the start. The program will take you from running 1 minute at a time to running…
  • I'm in. 11/1: 0.5 hour (running) 11/2: 1 hour (running) 11/4: 1.50 hour (Zumba + running) Total: 3/24 hours
  • My daughter and I did a Halloween 5K together - me as Runner 5 wearing my Runner 5 t-shirt and her as a zombie.
  • I am in Vermont. Right now only my Friday and Saturday runs are outside because it's too dark in the early AM or evening to run outside. I plan to keep at least my Saturday long run outside for as long as I can. I definitely prefer it to the treadmill. I will move it inside though if there is a lot of ice because I don't…
  • What about the 5K "Finish it" plan from Train Like a Mother? http://anothermotherrunner.com/2012/08/27/beginningrunner/ If you click the link and scroll down the page, there is a hyperlink for a free .pdf of the 5K Finish It plan. I am currently doing the 10K Finish It Plan, and I'm loving it. I think the 5K plan starts…
  • You did great just by starting and finishing! Think back to your first days of running - did you ever imagine that you would run 3.1 miles with only 20 seconds of walking ONE time????? That is great! You can't help the asthma and the impact that it has on you, but look at what you accomplished in spite of all that! Best of…
  • Agreed! I started at the high school track very very early in the morning so that no one would see me. Now I run all over town in a skirt and I don't care who sees me! Before you know it you will wonder whatever made you so worried about 20 minutes.
  • This time, I am giving away all of my "fat" clothes as I go along. I am keeping only one of my biggest pairs of pants just as a reference point for me. Everything else is going as I'm sizing down. I actually have another pile started right now of the stuff that I bought this summer that is now too big for me. I…
  • DH and I pay about $100 together for our gym. It is a nice gym, but I think, in general, the gyms in our area are really pricey. This is the only "full service" gym in the area (with showers, for example) and has hours that work the best for us (5 AM - 9:30 PM weekdays and 8-6 on weekends). We are fortunate in that my FIL…
  • And 4.5 today for an October final total (no running on the schedule for tomorrow) of 66/50 miles.
  • Personally, I didn't do back to back runs until I completed the whole C210K program, mostly because I wanted to take it slow and steady and avoid any/all injuries. If you are already sore, I would probably not do the days back to back to back. You don't want to get hurt or strain something and then be out for a week or…
  • With respect to the "no you can't/yes I can" argument about building muscle from running, is it possible that the "yes I can" person has lost fat so the existing musculature is more visible? I absolutely believe that running can help in that respect - I know it has for me. My leg muscles show up much more now because I've…
  • You can definitely use running as a tool for weight loss. I have been running since March and have lost quite a bit of weight during that time. However, I also pay attention to what I eat. It sounds from what you have said that you may be taking in too few calories. If you are eating 1300 and burning an extra 400, your net…
  • I did 3 yesterday, so now I am at 61.5/50. I doubt I have ever broken 60 miles in a month. I actually have 4 on the schedule for today, so I should break 65! Awesome!
  • Congrats, OP, on your new PR! I am doing one of the plans from the Train Like a Mother book right now, which I am really enjoying. There is some "baby steps" speedwork in the plan, which has been great for getting me introduced to the concept and the feel of it. I have noticed that I'm able to go faster over…
